    PS2 concept pic

Circa 1998, from Next Generation magazine

I remember seeing this and thinking it looked SO cool. It still looks cool even though it was nothing like the actual PS2. Just thought I'd post it here so everyone could check it out.

  2. It looks just like the PS1... and the DC for that matter like they say... Whoever is designing the Playstation consoles or took part in any of the three's design... hats off, every time... they make beautiful machines... The real designs end up totally abusing all the mock-ups and outside-of-SCE-Design-Bureau (if I can call it that...) artist conceptions.

I've never seen this. Thanks for sharing. It looks hella ugly to me though. Even when I was 10 I think I would've thought this is ugly. In general I've always like smooth and more prism like shapes. Playstation consoles are too elegant for all that mess on top of there too lol. You'd think I'd be holding the console while I play hahaha.

Post some more! Getting me excited to see PS4 mock-ups get demolished when the real thing is revealed in 2010-12 lol.

It's amazing what they make in China isn't it? Looks like a chinese radio/CD alarm clock.

Currently playing: Everything God of War

  4. Yeah I remember seeing a whole bunch of artist renders for what they thought the PS2 might look like. They were all way off.

There's a special kind of nerd though, who thinks computers will overtake mankind in thirty years, changing humanity in ways incomprehensible to us now, ignoring the third of the world without electricity. It gives spiritual significance to technology developed primarily for entertainment and warfare and gives nerds something to obsess over that isn't the crushing vacuousness of their lives.

Same for the PS3. There was already speculation about what it would look like when FFX came out, including the "innovative" feature of a little screen on the console telling you the name of what game was in there.

  6. ^I liked the one that looked like a really extravagant waffle maker.

    Ah got it....

I like how their imagination didn't make for a new logo style for the Playstation system font. Just replaced PS2's '2' with a 3.

It's quite literally just a circle with the PS2 slots on it. No imagination for the possibility of wireless controllers either....

Like Lali said... they all end up way off.

We may as well look at concepts to find out what the next Playstation won't look like.

  10. Too round and too stupid.
    Too 'Spacemaker' like.
Too gray and flat out ugly (although it did get the slotloading design).
Omfg that logo and that entire design...

I remember all of these concepts lol.

I think that bottom one is a Sony DVD player.

  12. No, that is definitely a Walkman.

There is a Sony DVD player that looks kind of similar to that though.

Personally, I really wish Sony had released those batarang controllers - they looked comfy and shiny!

You don't eat pigs, we don't eat pigs,
It seems it's been that way forever.
So if you don't eat pigs and we don't eat pigs,
Why not not eat pigs together?

They're not really that different to the ones we have now.

Odd that both PS2 concepts had 4 controller ports. I think that would've been much better than trying to make money off of the multi-taps, which I doubt many people bought in the end.

me and my friends shared one between us all for days when we all went round one persons house

the controllers just look a bit weird, like very short handles

Matt, don't try to fool anyone here.

We all know that's a toilet.

Yes they are... what are you looking at? Lol j/k.

But in all seriousness the differences in the D-pad and face buttons, back buttons... the final PS controller you can just look at and tell it feels a lot better in the hands.

Like what's up with those semi-circles for backbuttons???
