They said the "problem" right there in the news story. You can program animals to greet you by whatever "pet name" you'd like. When you connect online or direct to other users, animals, greetings, clothes and so on can be swapped between games... so, someone else's sense of humor can impact your own game.

All online games state "Experience may change during online play" as a safety net.
