It is for dedicated shooter fans. And for people looking for something that's really 'huge' on their PS3. It is a spiritual SOCOM sequel that should stand out as a premier online shooter for the PS3 like SOCOM was for the PS2.
    I dig....we'll see

Lol. I gave you more (deserved) credit for your skepticism.

Omni, you're right it's the 256 players that is the draw... but it really boils down to how those 256 players are playing the game - according to how streamlined and appropriate MAG can make a 256 player game be an intimate and logically and functionally sound battlefield.

It can be either 'just BF with 256 players' or hopefully Zipper can be '256 players which play a shooter with completely new and full dimensions.'

Recently we had the incredible opportunity to share with you a first look for the MAG project at the SCEA E3 Press Conference. We’re thrilled with the early responses from everyone and have been amazed at all the creative speculation about the game. If you haven’t seen the news, MAG is a new online shooter coming in 2009 where up to 256 players wage battles as 8-person squads in a new and unique World. You can watch the press event here or download it from the PLAYSTATION Store.
Though it’s early to talk in depth about MAG, we can definitely quell some fears we’ve already heard from you about how MAG will need to compromise on gameplay to support its size. Well, it may be massive but it is an action shooter at its core. You can run around and shoot enemies, throw grenades, and drive vehicles just like any other shooter except with MAG you’ll do it with up to 256 players. The team at Zipper was one of the pioneers of online gaming on consoles with the SOCOM franchise and they’ve used this knowledge to create a brand new server architecture to make an original game like MAG possible.
Here’s a sneak peak from one of our internal play sessions:

We’re anxious to talk more about MAG and all its features as soon as we can. Until then, stay tuned to the PlayStation blog for more details and official news.

MAG is a brand new IP and is not part of the SOCOM franchise so it won’t have that as part of the name.

I'm having Socom 3 vibes come from this game. I think it's not going to be good because it's just going to be too big. I'll still give this game a chance, but I won't expect much from it.

  13. It's big in a good sense though.

It's basically a 8 man squad shooter but you have MUUUUUCH more enemies to kill.

    Win-win.

That may be the case, but have you thought there might be an excessive amount to kill at one time or not enough at some points. I just see it being too hectic at times and having big time lag issues. **Socom 3 memories sparking in my brain** God!!! NO!!!

    joking obviously.

looking at the presentation again, they were focusing a lot on the tactical side. I am sure they are aware of the potential mess this size could be. also, I am glad that someone like Zipper is behind this since I love tactical shooters much, much more than arcade ones. heck, I don't think I'd even play an arcade shooter seriously anymore.

Socom 3 honestly wasn't very tactical. In wars, "Hey guys where are you gonna camp?" They say, "well I was thinking of camping in this bush for over 4 hours or I might take a dip in the lake for endless hours." If that's tactics and fun, then I don't know much about gaming. Obviously I'm just joking, but my faith in zipper has dropped drastically.

I never played any of the SOCOM games, so I have no idea. I am just saying that making such a large mass work is certainly very hard. but I hope that there will be great clan support that you can find or create some hardcore, serious players and play each other and leave the Doom players to make each other sick on different servers.

that is why the game must not be an arcade shooter (loots of bullets sprayed for a kill and flashlight-like swinging aiming). I think if you find a good group to play with in CoD4, it is a lot harder for those idiots to spoil your game since they would be mowed down in literally seconds.

bottom line: have great clan features and we can make our own great sessions.

Socom 3 did suck because of the camping on the large maps. 1 guy left on the other team and it would take forever to find him, usually have to wait for the clock to run out. Though I think they will learn from their mistakes and make M.A.G. great.
