I'm aware that theres another DBZ BL thread in the PS3 section, but I think its easier to locate it right here instead of sifting through all the sub forums. Now that its out what do you guys think of it?
I beat the crap out of this game and my final analysis is that it is a total down-grade from Tenkaichi 3. Hell even Budokai 3 was better than this. Looks like I have the power of foresight because I deemed it crap before it even came out.
If you adore the Tenkaichi series, this game will feel like a complete down-grade to you. The controls are the biggest gripe I have about the game. It depends on the situation but at times the controls can be too tight AND unresponsive. For example: I want to dash and hit this asshole that keeps spamming me with Big Bang Attacks. I press and hold forward, a second and a half later I'm doing it. Then I want to do a smash attack, but it instantly stops in mid dash and I end up kicking the air 3 feet away from my opponent. Wtf? And to put the cherry on top of the shit sundae, the side-stepping in this game is a complete epic fail. When you're in close quarters combat and you do this, you're going to get disoriented really fast. In other fighting games when you side step, the camera stays on you and you're still on your side of the screen, where as in Burst Limit you side step the camera spazes out and you're on the side your opponent is on. Now when you're trying to avoid barrages of combos by side-stepping in and out of the screen, it becomes a total cluster fuck and it no longer becomes fun to play
Now with mutilated controls like this, its gonna make you want to commit suicide when you try online. I made a rant a few weeks ago about how bad Tenkaichi 3's online mode was, but I'd honestly rather play THAT than this games online. It doesn't lag as much as BT3 but theres still enough of it to totally screw you over for the rest of your match. Not to mention that every prick on Xbox Live spams the shit out of their character's special moves.
I have yet to win a single match online out of 53 because of these reasons. I think my ranking is literally in the negatives. Yeah sure, I probably suck, but I'm willing to bet its these shitty controls and the 2 second delay on my button commands. Even if I did suck ass, statistically I should have won at least 1 round in a match. but thats yet to happen
The developers have had enough god damn practice. Why cant they get it right? Last year we get a badass fighter with ungodly amounts of lag, and now we get a crap fighter with "not so bad" lag. They spent too much time making it look pretty.
Another example of good graphics don't make a good game. Anyway, thats my opinion on this game. I was very let down. Thank god I only rented this through gamefly. If anyone has Xbox live and this game I'd love to fight you while I still have this before it goes back in the mail, you can see how much I suck. Gamertag is Nathan420
What are you're guys thoughts on this?
The demo I played on the PS3 made me think it was 10 times better than Budokai 3. The system itself is much more complex than B3, and I have never been a fan of the Tenkaichi series (because I prefer more traditional fighting).
I haven't tried the full game though, but if it plays anything like the demo, then I would say that the games system is actually better than B3 or even Shin Budokai on the PSP for that matter. And lack of characters is fine for me, if they play differently enough.
I think I'll rent it first to check out its online play first, to see if it is really as bad as you say it is.
I got this game Friday on PS3, Atari fuck ups sent the wrong version. But i really havent played the story mode yet buy my lil bro has...and beat it in 2-3 hours. But meh, who cares about the story right? Everyone knows it by now.
The gameplay is nothing but Shin Budokai, which was on PSP. Thats not a bad thing, but then again i wasnt really a big fan of the PSP games.
I agree though, i like Budokai 3 WAY better. Maybe not in the fighting fields does it succeed, but overal fun factor and value. They took out more than half the characters that appeared in B3, the mini games, and most of all the FUN. Online is solid but damn, can you say lag fest most of the time?
I also like the Tenkaichi series, but never picked up 3. So i compare this to BT2, i gotta say i had/have more fun with Tenkaichi 2.
The only things that Burst Limit succeeds in are the graphics and fighting system, which is the best to date of any DBZ game.
The change in the Ki system was a bad one becuase as Nate said, all everyone does is spam special attacks then the thing fills so damn quick BY ITSELF that once full spam a ultimate attack.
Moving the little "burst mode" commands to face buttons is lame cuz itll wear those buttons down in no time but then again, the analog stick rubber on my ps2 slipped off because of them.
And the ONE thing...the ONE thing i gotta say i hate the most are those damn drama pieces. Oh and the awful lip syncing made for the japanese voice over only. And that ANNOYING camera. damn
I would never purchase this title, especially not for $60. Its hard to believe Dimps/NamcoBandai worked on this for over 2 years.
Makes me wonder how CyberConnect2(the naruto guys) would handle a DBZ game
AND HOW CAN YOU TAKE OUT WORLD TOURNAMENT MODE!?
BL is a complete downgrade over B3 with the only success being the graphics, which look exceptional. Dont get me wrong, its a fun game for any DBZ fan but it just feels like Budokai 1 all nice looking. Personally, i can't wait for BL3, now that should be something great.
I thought it was stupid.
I also thought the graphics were kind of weaksauce. Too much background 'bloom/blur' crap.
I think the aesthetics of the PS2 one actually were better because of it lol. If the next gen version looked more like that Naruto game (which looks like amazing cel shading) I'd be more interested.
Big thumbs down from me.

I just played online....again....why do I keep torturing myself? All it is: BIG BANG ATTACK! BIG BANG ATTACK! BIG BANG ATTACK! BIG BANG ATTACK! (pause) SUPER BIG BANG ATTACK!! BIG BANG ATTACK!
Budokai Tenkaichi 3 = Great fighting game with unplayable online
Burst Limit = OK fighting game with semi good online
They probably fear making a GOOD DBZ fighting game because if they did that would put an end to their cash cow. Atari is like the oil company of video games, they overprice you just to give you jack shit.
EDIT: Now that you guys mention it (curryking and OG) Burst Limit is almost a clone of CyberConnect2's Naruto Rise of a Ninja fighting system. To pull off a substitution jutstu you gotta press -> A at the moment your opponent hits you. Sound familiar doesn't it? Imitation is the finest form of flattery I suppose but it wouldn't have killed them to be a little more original.
People are so used to having like 190428409128 characters in a DBZ game, but when it comes to playing as them, there isn't much variety in how they play. Shin Budokai 2 on the PSP was especially guilty of this. Now in this game, there is only 21 character, and I have only played with Goku and Yamcha, and I can clearly tell the difference between them. Different combos and such, and I could go more into detail.
And from what I have read on shoryuken.com forums, the fighting system does have more to it then the system of B3, it is just the lack of characters and that turns people off. But seriously, 21 characters is good for a fighting game. Why do you need abstract characters like Kui, Dodoria or Zarbon when you know they will most likely play like carbon copies of each other.
But really, the most complex, deepest, and best (IMO) DBZ fighter is still Super DBZ. BL is good it its own respect though. But that new Naruto game that is comming out is probably gonna end up being better than this game.
As for the fighting system, B3 was just so much more fun, imo. I dont like that you can't power up now or that you can spam specials like its nothing, aura spark mode makes you WAY to powerful aswell. I enjoyed B3 a lot more personally, but the thing that ticks me off the most is having your ki gauge at the bottom and your health at the top, annoys the hell out of me.
Now, is super DBZ the SNES one that came out in 96? If so, then imo thats the best DBZ game as far as being a deep fighter.
This is Super DBZ. Arcade game that got ported to the PS2. It was headed by Noritaka Funamizu who was part of making SFII. It plays a lot more like a traditional fighter, and probably has the most depth of any DBZ game, really.
I think the SNES one your thinking about is Hyper Dimension.
Anyways, I just got BL today, but I haven't taken it online yet. First impressions are that the Aura Burst isn't really as powerful as I previously though because hits with triangle can knock you out of a dash and they don't get absorbed. It is pretty much like the Hyper Mode from B3, just a little nerfed. The best strategy I found was to combo into a heavy smash and then use a quick Ki attack. It won't always work because it can be counted by a mega crush, but it is still a solid offensive plan.
And pursuit attacks/teleports are harder to time in this game, so that is good. It was way to easy to teleport out of anything in B3. And the fact that ultimate guard drains ki is good as well. Stops people from idling with ultimate guard.
I have to say I like that the ki charges automatically, and that ultimate attacks, mega crush attacks and heavy smash attacks are the only things that drain ki (out of aura spark mode). It makes things more streamlined, and matches become quicker because of that.
Drama pieces have to go though. Atleast the ones longer than 5 seconds. It breaks up the action too much.
I will probably test out the online waters tomorrow and tell you my take on it. It will probably suck, but w/e, I wasn't the one who payed for this game.
I've been online 3 times and I have received an ass kicking each time.
So far people have used Goku every time and spam his Kamehameha and Kaiô-ken. It's frustrating.
In the third match, I did improve when I was using Frieza with being able to land heavy smash attacks and a few super attacks.
Eh, oh well. I like the game as its the first I have played in the series.
I just played 2 games online, and the input lag was horrible. I won both games by a pretty large margin (spammers are so easy to defeat), but it totally sucked.
I played the game some more online, and I figured something out...
A lot of you guys must suck if you can't beat spammers. I was up against Vegeta and Goku spammers, and all I had to do was sidestep and fuck there shit up, repeatedly. Then when they did there ultimate, I just blocked, and hit them with my own ultimate.
I have only lost twice out of the 20 or so matches I played because the people that were playing actually knew how to play the game (using cancels, and doing massive damage combos on me). And I found lag to be very tempermental. I can get perfect matches going, but only with people pretty close to where I live. People from the east coast of the US and around there are where I had the best maches...
And you have this game for the PS3 OG? I'd like to play you, just to see how good you are lol.
I can't do cancels online so w/e. The lag prevents me from doing it most of the time so it'll be even, don't worry. Just if you like to spam moves, know that I will fuck your shit up lol.
Online is also riddled with quitters, I just beat two Vegeta spammers who both quit on me. I sent them messages telling them they are little bitches, just for fun haha.
In player matches, a private match can be made, and you can invite a friend on your PSN list. I already added you (Young_Tru right?) so I'll just invite you and you should be able to join the match.
If there was ingame xmb, it would be so much easier lol.
Haha good games OG... Our connection was pretty good.. I didn't really feel any delay (but I couldn't do my 23 hit combo with piccolo, so ther was some lag).
What you need to keep an eye on is your fatigue gauge... I stuned you twice in the 3 games we played... Aura Spark or transforming will keep the fatigue in check. Also, don't teleport as much... Use it sparingly because it adds a lot of fatigue. If you can, sidestep attacks more... Teleporting should only be used to continue a combo or to get out of a bad situation... Not at the second hit of a combo...
