I started playing a game and it froze. My name is the same as PSN so if anyone wants to add and see if we can play together.
i think this thread is about to get dangerous for me!
the graphics are great but except for the occasional glitch, like enemies clipping through surfaces revealing their position or a bit of flickering on thin walls.
the camera is terrible. it needs a fixed third person camera. going from the free camera to over the shoulder or first person camera causes the game to alig your view to your body, rather than aligning your body to your current view. it is counter intuitive and a real annoyance. trying to use grenades when you're near cover..or anything is impossible. the grenade arc is nice, unfortunately the camera will give you a lovely close-up of player and not let you see where the arc is going with monotonous regularity.
the guns and the killing i think really miss what mgo was going for. there is no slow, methodical, tactical killing. it takes somewhere around 800 bullets to kill something aiming at the chest which nullifies any sort of advantage gained from outpositioning your opponent and the fighting degenerates into a crapshoot of who will get the headshots. the apparent lack of bullet penetration is also troublesome, as is the inability to fire from crouch if you're close to an obstruction approaching your height. then there is the auto-aim. it only works from extremely close range (and apparently smgs outrange assault rifles for aim-assist, who thought that one up?) and once locked you can safely pump bullets into somebody with no fear of missing... once locked. locking the auto-aim is painful as there is no indication of what range it locks at and the issue of aim being based on your player model not your free camera view rears its ugly head. it is incredibly annoying to aim at close range because of this. randomly try to face them with your model, not camera, fail and be in over the shoulder view looking in another direction and turning slowly, release aim and try again. this causes mid-range battles to degenerate into clumsy over the shoulder aim-offs. using first person at any time other than camping is not advised as you pretty much cant move.
the movement is so-so. it is fairly clunky when performing a roll and the lack of a regular jump is painful. that combined with the inability to grab ledges and pull yourself up results in very limited options for movement - but this may just be poor map design.
the non-weapon items dont serve much of a purpose. the advantage of getting the jump on your opponent with a cardboard box is negligable thanks to the issues described in the section above and the drum looks out of place everywhere leaving it resigned to the role of death trap.
the cqc is not user friendly. maybe it is better with levels in the cqc skill? i didnt try it, without it however the 'cqc' with a gun us make a really weak prod with the butt of the gun, which does not so much as knock your opponent over. you are in all cases better off simply shooting your opponent rather than using a gun cqc, regardless of range.
this is all from a casual point of view. perhaps the game is much better in clan play utilising SOP and such. however, for casual gaming i really dont see how this is supposed to attract me away from something like cod. it is clumsy and dull.
"I shall hew my retribution from your flesh"
GRAW online wasnt much different Z :P
And i know the game if chock full of tards atm which im fine with.
few more things ive picked up on.
- the crosshair is to spaced out for long shots.
- combat rolling and then trying to should aim quickly is impossible as it takes way to long to bring up the shoulder aim.
-the camera isnt very good. even though we have control of it, its still very restricted. i found myself having to break cover to get a better angle.
- doesnt seem to be much diference in the weapons. i used the M4, AK and the p90. and they didnt really feel much different, to me anyway.
- as Z said the game is just too slow, when going into shoulder view it gets even slower which doesnt make alot of sense why not ust keep the same running speed in shoulder view and alter the acuracy of the guns while runing.
- Some of the visuals were a bit of a let down to be honest. but i dont care to elaborate as its a multiplayer :P and when itcomes to those visuals arent what i really care about.

i know there are many complaints about the online, but isn't that what Beta is all aboutif it was perfect, there wouldn't be a Beta... so instead of moaning, how about informing

I dunno they seem like well written critiques to me, cliffbo. So far I'm having fun (but I have to get ready for work now >_< ), but I can understand where the other guys are coming from. It does need tuning.
Thank you lali. and Cliff/jay gee... we voice our concerns because its a beta :P its what they are for. not to have a go at the game and wait for the release. its to play it and give feedback about what we think should be changed.

bahahaha, really ironic you chose that to describe such horrible, horrible english displayed by both myself and passive. ^_^
thanks for the support at though, just trying to express honest concerns, not bash.
as for your 'comments' jay... there is... no need for that.

Well, well written might be a misnomer, but they were mature and to the point without being snarky or stupid.
Just hopefully now some of the things get looked at by enough people to be adressed by the MGO dev teams. I, like many others wish this game to be a successful stand alone game but they need to work on it some more before release for that to happen. i mean some of the things Rapture and i pointed out are rather picky as for example the camera. Both he and i play fps multiplayers and arent really all that use to playing with a controlable camera like that so maybe we just fail. But maybe not. It'll be good to see what others think once they have a decent playthrough.

so you guys reay to come back to warhawk?
We the people...
A few gripes. Killing the chest takes wayyyy too long. Yes.
People don't use SOP but that is understandable. It is early I just thought people would want to check it out, I know I did. I find it useful.
When I get CQC'd to the ground, I am automatically ready to aim. This will take some getting used to. Since I always think that I'm dizzy and will just get straight up. But instead I am able to kill the person who just CQC'd me.
The mic usage is soooo low that it's tough to tell people what to do. In the level where you have to take the kerotan to the certain spot, people were just bringing it to the base and sitting there and getting killed.
But it's awesome. Really liking it but wished movement was a little faster and spawn locations were better too.
Also, the square button keeps bugging me. I keep thinking it is still CQC but is now the auto-aim toggler.
BTW, I'm kafka on the beta.
Mine's updating.... =[
aaahh shiiiit
I played for about an hour and here are my initial thoughts:
Visuals are good considering if you compare to other 3rd person shooters like Warhawk or GRAW, but not on the level of a COD4... The visuals are very crisp and sharp at 1080P.
Sound: disappointing considering all of the acclaim for the sound in the single player campaign the guns sound ok, but nothing special and the player chatter is kind of corny...
Gameplay: This game could use a sprint button or something to speed up the play it just seems slow. Also, the controls are not that smooth for a MP shooter, but it could just take some time to become familiar with the controls in this type of game setting.
Overall at this point I'm disappointed with the experience, because it's just mediocre IMHO. MGS is really known for the story and overall gaming experience and I'm not sure if that translates to an online MP shooter. Perhaps after spending more time and really understanding the teamwork aspects and advanced features of the game I will change my position...
I cant connect....... ugh

The Metal Gear Online beta is now officially open for the United States as well. To download the beta, US players will require a code which they received after pre-ordering Metal Gear Solid 4.
You guys are so lucky. I'm stuck at fricking work!!!
I like the slow pace. I wish getting into first person was a bit easier. I have fun but I can't get into other modes other then TDM.
