  1. Tales of Vesperia in Japan. MS may see 1 million 360s in Japan alot sooner if they keep up this trend of holding down exclusive jRPGs over there.

Acclaim boss: Sony has no chance of making money on the PS3

Acclaim boss David Perry seems to be making a habit out of bold claims lately. Last month at E3, he claimed that the event was broken, expensive, and an embarrassment to the industry.

From what we've seen of the event, his words struck home. His latest claim feels a bit premature for me, but what do you guys think? Perry says that Sony has no chance of profiting from the PlayStation 3, and that they'll never achieve the same success that they got from the PS2:

"Because of the cost of making the PlayStation 3 and because they sold it at a loss, Sony basically has pretty much no chance of making money on the PS3, because it's lost more money than they made during the entire peak of the PlayStation 2. It's not going to happen again for Sony"

Quite a bold thing to say, considering that the PlayStation 3 has been increasing in sales lately, and that the Leipzig Games Convention is still ongoing and Sony may still have a couple of surprises.

I could well see this being true. The cost of the cell was insane but it is also true that the cell is being used in other applications.
Does the game attatchment rate per console cover the initial losses? Are they making money from consoles now?
Viper has said many times that looking at it realistically for the PS3 to sell as much as the PS2 in its projected timeline it would have to sell much better than the wii has been doing which in itself is already better than the PS2 did.

Admittedly this thread is similar to the console sales thread but this isn't looking at the different consoles. It looks at the playstation alone and the strategy sony use to make money back on their investment if at all possible

Didn't Sony say that they will no longer lose any money on the PS3 by the end of this year? Its either that or I heard something about March 09.

And there David Perry (isn't that the same dude that used to head Shiny?) made a complete ass of himself. He neglected to take into consideration sales of the console after it becomes profitable (falling for the old "if it doesn't make boat loads of cash by the time next gen starts, it's a loser", which we all know to be BS by looking at PS2), and he also neglected to take into account profits from Blu-Ray movies that their system brought as a standard HD movie format. Couple that with royalties from Cell being used in other applications, as well as nearly all profit PSN sales, and it's easy to see that he is spewing bovine diarrhea from his mouth.

Keep in mind these numbers are talking about hardware only. Sony has always sold hardware at a loss and made money on the software so to be honest he isn't saying anything new.

Sony Computer Entertainment has now sold over 14.41 million PlayStation 3 units worldwide since it launched in 2006, according to financial documents released today.

The company sold 1.56 million PS3 consoles during the first quarter of its 2008 fiscal year, which ran from April 1 to June 30. At the end of Sony's 2007 fiscal year, over 12.85 million PS3 units had been sold worldwide.

As of March, Nintendo's Wii had sold 24.45 million units worldwide while Microsoft's Xbox 360 had moved 19 million. Both companies have yet to provide updated figures.

Lifetime worldwide figures for the PlayStation 2 and PSP hardware are not available, as 2007 was the first fiscal year that Sony declared sales, not shipment numbers. In all, Sony expects to sell 9 million PS2s, 10 million PS3s, and 15 million PSPs during the current fiscal year, which ends on March 31, 2009.

As for the actual financials, Sony's Game division saw $2.16 billion in sales revenue--a 16.8% jump over last year--and posted a $51 million profit. The company stated this was an "improvement" over the $237 million it lost in Q1 2007, owing the reduction to better performance of "the PS3 business" and "strong sales of PSP hardware."

An earlier version of this story incorrectly attributed a $51 million loss, not profit, to Sony's Game division. Shacknews apologizes for the confusion, and furthermore, is not fond of the parenthesis that led to this error.

PS3 is for the long run, the best console for me this generation and Sony know what they are doing. The price will drop, the best games will be available, and PS3 will sell like bread. Let do the job to people who know their stuff and stop with meaningless ranting ! PS3 is a winner product!
...sorry for the fanboys who would love the opposite.

PS3 success forces Valve to "re-evaluate" support for Sony's box

"We're always evaluating what's happening in the marketplace and certainly something that's happening in the last couple of months is that Sony's managed to sell some boxes," said Lombardi.

"So whether or not you like developing for that platform, if they've got millions of people connected to that platform and buying their games you have to take it seriously."

He went on: "They're in the race now, so we've got to re-evaluate that for what it is."

In other words... "perhaps if we don't give them diarrhea on a disc which we didn't even bother to port ourselves, we might actually stand to make a buck or two off of this piece of shit machine that we hate so much."

who doesn't want money!! Publishers want money!!
☑ First they ignore you (Pre-2007)
☑ Then they laugh at you (2007-2008)
☑ Then they fight you (2008-2010)
☑ Then they copy you (2011-2012)
    ☐ Then you win...

    That gives a total of:

    Nintendo - 98 940 [3 732 177]
    Sony - 76 677 [3 327 818]
    MS - 24 962 [115 793]

PS3 is selling badly in Japan. it is so bad that 360 is selling more than half as much! PS3 has always hovered around 10k, aside from occasional spikes. I am not happy with PS3 in japan at all.

how is it doing in the rest of Asia compared to the other systems?

The proximity PS3 has to wii in japan is surprising. I figured there'd be a much wider gap.
