Some numbers on DS / Game Boy

So, after looking in the August NPD thread, I was thinking about DS sales, and how these two girls from Japan that my sister and I hung out with said that almost everyone they know has a DS.

Game Boy (released in 1989) and Game Boy Color (released in 1998) were obviously popular and combined sold 118.69 million, as of March 31, 2005. So, 118.69 million over the course 16 years.

Game Boy Advance was wildly popular, and from its released in 2001 to June 2007 (only 6 years) sold 80 million.

And then take a look at the numbers for the DS.

The DS Lite, released in March 2006, has sold 28.69 million as of June 2007.


Combined with the original DS, that means in under 3 years (Nov '04 - June '07), DS + DS Lite have sold 47.27 milion...

Nintendo's handhelds just keep getting more and more popular. I can't imagine the staggering number the DS/DS Lite/Whatever-other-DS-they-make will hit in 6 years, or more. Or how popular Nintendo's NEXT handheld will be.

Looks like I'm going to have to go edit some Wiki pages. Those figures are not correct.

The 47 million number is combined, not DS (fat). Actual sales are just under 50 million now (about a week or two away).

However, the fascinating figure here is ~29 million for DSLite in just over 1 year. Give it the 6 year GBA treatment and you have 150+ million units.

Wow, it surprises me that the DS phat has sold more than the DS Lite. Everyone I know in real life has a DS Lite.

Well, the DS exploded before the Lite was out, so it makes sense to me. I only know one friend of mine with the DS Lite (besides myself), and all the rest have Phats. It won't stay that way for long, though. Do they even make Phats any more?

I read somewhere that Nintendo discontinued them, but that was an unreliable source. Yeah, I guess it does make sense, but I just thought that way because I don't know anyone with an original DS offline.

I don't know if you saw my post above yours but the numbers aren't correctly divided among DS and DS Lite.

Total DS sales are 49 million of which 29 million are DS Lites. The original DS model sold ~20 million.
