I think though you are confusing me and others because i understand it as you want devs to use the horsepower of the PS3 to make multi platform games better which will never happen because publishers would rather save a buck anywhere they can. Doing so would delay the game more than 3 months also which would be bad as CK says for the PS brand. On the other hand delaying Bayonetta makes ense. Fixing something broken makes sense. You are correct on that last point. I would wait for a ficed delayed version of Bayonetta but not a delay to make a game better than the 360 version with extra content that could take more than 6 months like Mass Effect 2.
yeah, i'm not saying across the board, i'm just saying i'd prefer it to getting the inferior version (be it tiny, but it's still there)

So after establishing Star Ocean on the PlayStation (yea, i know the first one was a nintendo game), it's okay when Square-Enix decides to fuck every single PlayStation owner with not developing SO4 multiplat from the ground on? I don't think its okay. SO4 didn't took more than 1,5 years to be developed, i think, after tri-Ace did the 360 exclusive and bad infinite undiscovery in 2008.
When Square Enix is interested in making the game for the PS3, than i would have wanted to know from the first moment on. Because until it was announced as International Edition, it was an Xbox 360 exclusive, with which Microsoft and all Xbox 360 owners did a heavy part of propaganda over the "exclusive" year... And that was pure terror and assfucking for someone like me, as a long year PlayStation fan and Star Ocean player ... i also had to think about buying an addictional console and i'm glad i didnt do it. While i think there are too many people, that didnt want to wait, so now they won't buy the PS3 version, because they already own it fpr 360. On the other hand, i will definitly not buy a one year old game for the full price. SE should throw it on the market for 40 bucks, like Capcom did with Lost Planet. Unless this happens, i wont buy it. And there will be more like me.

So if no one buys the PS3 version, because they already own it for 360 or dont want to pay the full price for an old game ... whats the reason for developing a PS3 version? Sorry, but i think the scenario turned into shit, when SO was first announced as a 360 excklusive. Nothing against developing it for the Xbox. But something against not developing simultaniously or primarily focused on the PS3.

EDIT: So to correct you: No, that way isn't the best compromise for the devs. If they know they are going to develop a game for many platforms, they have to take the best way, proven by other devs: Focus on PS3, then easily port it to 360 with very few problems. In this case, neither fans nor non-ps3-owners, nor Sony, nor Square Enix would have taken damage. But everyone who would've wanted to buy the game, would have been able to do at the same day, in the same quality, for both consoles, just like he wants.

I'm not seeing too much SO4 discussion here.

i never said it was acceptable. in fact i've said the opposite. but given a compromise (with other games) i would rather see a delay with extra content than an underused Blu-ray with perhaps even worse textures and framerate. i'm making a choice between compromise. in an ideal world i would want the devs to make the PS3 version better from the get go, but that isn't going to happen just yet.

but that would not be a compromise that would be the perfect scenario. i'm choosing between compromises and being a realist at this point

Okay, then i didn't get your core point, excuse me.

But only because we got used to bad ported games, wo shouldn't lower our expectations, i think!
The first thing is, the game never was delayed. It just wasn't announced. Still, i cant accept that. I guess it wasn't announced because they first developed the 360 version. Even worse than keep a PS3 version secret ...

The second thing is, porting the game takes too much time. More than one year later, they should release it for 40 instead of 60-65 Euros, Dollar, whatever. Regardless if there is little more content in the box.

EDIT: The fact that compromises have to be made is the most disapointing thing... Kojima also didn't have to make them.

Oh yes, I have to worry. It doesn't exactly seem all that friendly either. Go back on topic, please.

VG, i think you are seeing something here that doesn't exist. just because it sometimes gets heated, doesn't mean it's aggressive and nasty. AC!D, Curry and I are friends and Kartof is only expressive his differing opinion here. relax

Cliff, we appreciate if you or we all want the superior version, that is better for those of us who waited for the PS3 version to come out and want to buy SOIV.

It just doesn't serve SONY, and it doesn't really serve SE either. Both of them should be worried about better branding, and better sales. I mean... why would SE want to 'avoid' selling something they make? It's so... absurd lol.

As a business owner, what would you do?

Would you stagger the release of one of your hot properties?

Would you avoid announcing one version 'just because you can?' Like Kart said, it was CLEARLY being made, but they never announced it... even after release of the Xbox version! Seriously lol, that's exactly what they did.

Or would you release the game once, and make it new for everyone?

Let's get this one major point straight: We are not against more content! :P

I actually think releasing SOIV LATER on BOTH systems--allowing more content for both--would be better than staggering the release for two different launches, thereby making one old.

(this is not to say I know there can be no other reason to release on Xbox first.... maybe SE was hurting for money and really needed to release SOIV on one system first to make their financial report better... but I don't see why this can be with all the rehashes of old games they keep making)

Don't you think it would hurt the PS3, and possibly GTA IV sales if...

GTA IV released later on the PS3? Even if it got more content?

I think it would hurt the PS3, badly as GTA has much more attention.

    P.S.

Also consider the fact that during a simultaneous release... no one has the better version! We wouldn't even be considering WHAT a better version COULD have, or how it would be better, or using this to justify the market potential of a better version on the PS3 anyway, because there would be no such version...

If there is no such version... all the interest in SOIV immediately falls on the only SOIV version there is for the console people own... and that becomes the PS3 and 360 on day 1.

That was really poorly said, I hope I convey what I mean there.

Curry, i totally agree with you here (ironically lol) i was just picking the best of two bad scenarios. the silliest decision SE made (even more so than the delay of FF for editing purposes) is SO coming to the 360 a year ahead of the PS3! we would have jumped at it and sold three times (at least) the amount it sold on the 360. given the install base in Japan, it is really difficult not to assume money changed hands, but even then, it was a stupid move. and now they release this meagre update a year later and are guaranteed less sales than they would have got a year ago. madness

    this all stemmed from this:

*cough* FF13 thread *cough* this is such a contradictive argument.
which was a very valid point.

    Taken from an earlier post.
    Updates includes:
    - Both Japanese and English voices
    - Subtitles in English, French and German etc.
    - Improved targetting in battles
    - Improved menus and interface
    - New Characters
Fixed issues, an option for jap audio with multi language subtitles, easier to browse menus & new characters,
now if those new characters come with their own back story etc, that's actually quite a lot of content to add when you think about all of their statistics.

Also, ty for the vid JasonXe.

Well the new characters in Star Ocean: TOET directors cut were hit and miss. Adray really didn't have much back story and Mirage had some because she was already in the story however Mirage was kind of a clone of Cliff fighting wise.

Star Ocean: The Last Hope International Has Extra Characters

    By Spencer . December 13, 2009 . 9:35am

Star Ocean: The Last Hope International has more than Japanese voices and anime portraits. Square Enix’s European newsletter slipped news that the PlayStation 3 port has “additional characters.”

Who are they? The newsletter didn’t drop any names. There’s also a mention of “overhauled menus,” perhaps a clue that players will be able to change between the pastel Japanese and space-age English menu layouts.

Hmmm...this sounds really good actually. I'm picking up Star Ocean day one! If for nothing else, I know the battle system will be fun and story won't be complete cheeks.

In light of these extra features, perhaps I should just wait for a International version of FF13 English subs with Japanese voice-overs sound good to me.

Not too bad, I'm liking the red glow.
If I were to criticise, the space ship is quite distracting, the planets & darkened images of the 2 characters are nice though.

yeah, i agree. it is kind of odd that they decided to have the space ship flying in front of the two characters, when they could have so easily had it behind them near one of the planets

edit: ok i'm confused. which is the real box?

Square Enix has released the official box art for Star Ocean: The Last Hope International, a sci-fi role-playing game coming to PlayStation 3 in February 2010. You’ll notice immediately it’s completely different from the Xbox 360 version and looks like it’s trying to appeal more to otakus rather than the typical western gamer; the game’s two main heroes — Edge and Reimi — are shown as anime characters.

Well that....Looks even better, the 1st doesn't have the psn logo on it, the 2nd one does, which is legit?

  19. Lol, I like both actually, but we can see the characters on ours :P

I'm thinking of picking this up, I might not pick it up release day, but sooner than later if I do.

Well the 2nd one has the ESRB rating so that's likely the one for the US. The other might be Europe.
