That stuff has always been around. Raising Pokemon is only as complicated as you want to make it. You don't need to worry about this stuff; most people don't.

I've been playing for a long time and I don't know what any of this crap is. Can somebody tell me what EVs, DVs, and IVs?

In Sapphire and Leaf Green, I made THE perfect teams. All were dual types, and most had their types so that one would cancel another's weakness (i.e. water/electric, no super effective for electric attacks). Did all the stats and everything. It was great. Now that I can import them, I need to look around for those games haha.

That's my whole attitude also. I'll bet 90% of people you'll fight have never even heard of EVs, let alone gone through the hassle of training with them specifically in mind. For myself, I think it takes most of the fun out of it. I just raise my monsters as best as I can and have fun battling.
