Alright guys...Just came back from Circuit City and Best Buy to do a little shopping for HDTV's. Then I saw the PS3 on display, with a bunch of cool videos and some old demos from the store. Thing is, I watched the MotorStorm trailer, which is probably about a month and half old now, and it was completely FUGLY!!! It was all grainy, and fuzzy, and to be honest, PS2 games like God of War and GT4 looked much better. It was hooked up to a Bravia, but I guess the TV wasn't configured right or maybe not even hooked up with an HDMI cable at all. It just left a bad taste in my mouth really...
I then saw a PGR demo on of the big screens and calmed down, it made me realize that the PS3 showcase simply didn't have ANY effort put into it whatsoever. So here's my litter problem. Which HDTV do I get to really set these titles apart from my PS2 collection?
There's two televisions I'm currently looking at. One is a 37in. Polaroid, 720p/HDMI set where I believe the contrast ratio is 1000:1....
The second is a Samsung which is smaller 32in. 720p/HDMI with a much better contrast ratio of 3000:1. Problem is, it's like $400 more and it's smaller...
I don't really wanna go over $1000 either for a friggin TV, so my other option is to get a 27in. Samsung with the same specs but for an even $1000, it just isn't quite big enough.
Question: 1) How much does contrast ratios really matter?
2) would Resistance/MotorStorm/VF5 look like the TV commercials and internet trailers we've been watching on the Polaroid TV with the specs above?
3) Does it matter what HDMI cable I get?
4) Is Samsung and Sony's Bravia that much better than the rest? The only difference I'm seeing is contrast ratios on the spec sheets?
Plz fellas...I know I may be a little late. But I'm not trying to get something and then it's outdated in like 6 months. I want this TV to be my permanent set for at least 3 years...Guide me![]()

Thanks rotorhead, might grab that one after I get the money.
Just a heads up on that one though:
Cons: After 10 mo.it started developing Problems like loseing remote control functions like it was loseing progamabilty,Than it Blows up The High Voltage circut.Cons: This monitor has a huge problem. This monitor has drag to it. When there is movement to the image quality, it has a small drag/ghosting behind it. Its really anoying when watching sports/playing games/any movement in general... If you dont mind it its great. But that's rare, the rest seemed very impressed and so were these guys until it exploded.Nice TV/Monitor until it Blows Up
1080p for $1000....Luck Americans! Hmph.
8 ms? Ehh... not to say that that's not a damn amazing TV and even more amazing for the price, but I find that 5 ms and below is ideal for response times.
what's ms?

This is the Polaroid one I'm talking about btw
Is the Westinghouse better than this? I've read some good reviews for Polaroids...

Omni, just save up for a good set. If it cost you a little more, itll make up for it in quality. I too was planning to get the 1080p Westinghouse, but after thinking it over and SAVING, I am only $900 from getting an XBR2 40".
eww LCDs

^LCD's are okay. Let me see you find a 1080p plasma for less than 1000 USD...
To answer the first post; AMOI Advent FTW!!!
Great cheap 1080p tv. Looks like crap when using analog cables, but with HDMI it's beautiful.

The Bravia is the best available without a doubt but its not that much better than the competition.
For good affordable 1080p I suggest Sony SXRD or Samsung DLP. (50 inch will run around the 1500-1700 usd mark, thats pretty damn good for these sets)
Also look into calibration for your set.
Tks Wounding...but I don't think I need a 1080p set when I'm going with a 32in. Do I? Do you really see a big difference?
Besides that, will this set still make games look awesome? http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Polar...0-0-0-0-4xe6b6

If your going to go 23"-37" then just settle for a 720p/1080i set, but if you can get a more respectable brand. In this day and age LCD manufacturers are dime a dozen.
Are you going to have cable hooked up directly to it, because if not I might recommend a BenQ monitor BenQ TV
Oh, @Omni, contrast ratios is like the richness of the colour. It's like how your colours 'contrast' with each other, the more they differ, and the more the differentiate themselves, the better. High contrast ratio = super good.
This is one reason why CRTs give you better colour than many new TVs, because they can deliver very high levels of contrast and colour using the phosphors and the cathode ray tube shooting electrons at it. The tube is also why our friends the CRTs are so fat.
Colour matters, a lot. It's very apparent when you put a low contrast ratio beside something with high contrast ratios, it simply looks more beautiful and colourful and vivid etc etc.
LCDs go like 2000:1, around there for monitors and so on. When Sony announced that 1000 000:1 contrast ratio, I was MEGA excited about the OLEDs, because this way you get the amazing contrast of a CRT and the sharpness and clarity of a flatscreen in one flat panel OLED screen. I want one so bad now, the OLED announcement has made me look very forward to looking at TVs when I'm buying stuff for myself.
