Thread: Folding@Home on the PS3?

  1. Folding@Home on the PS3?

Remember a while back when it was stated that Folding@Home can be used on PS3 .. what happened to this?

Their site does really go into when they would be releasing a download for this.

Yes, it's coming along nicely. I'm sure xbdestroya can elaborate on this. There was a new thread on this not long ago, I'll look for it in a little while.

My hands are a bit tied here, but it's safe to say that we won't be releasing the PS3 client for at least a few weeks. I am working with our collaborators to disclose some more information and when that's arranged, I will make a more formal announcement.

  5. Thanks VG, good to know. I guess eventually we will see it on the platform.

wonder if it somehow replaces the "screensaver" on ps3. you'd think there'd be some way to change the screensaver but there doesn't seem to be.

  7. I'm not sure about you guys, but I'm not yet confident enough that the PS3 hardware can run under full load consistently without developing hardware problems.

there are already clients for LInux.

but as LInux on ps3 has no access to rsx and the gpu is better then the cpu by a lot with these apps it won't be that good, wait till the native ps3 one comes out.

I'm just guessing here, but I think it will have to come with the next major firmware update, which is rumored to be coming around the time of the Euro launch.

I think either that firmware update, or one to follow, will move the PS3 into the "always on, always connected" mode that they talked about at TGS as being their vision for the platform.

Along with that firmware update, I hope they have an option where a user can engage the Remote Play application so that it can be engaged from the PSP, without having to engage it on the PS3 first. Something where a user could wake a sleeping PS3 via the PSP, and start the remote play.

This would go a long way towards eventually seeing Remote Play on the PSP via an infrastructure-type connection. That would rule. I'm already using the remote play function to serve music wirelessly via the PSP to other rooms in the house. (I'm going to need a bigger HD. I can feel it.)

AFAICR, their performance out of Geforce6xxx/7xxx hardware isn't really so hot (completely different from their performance on the Radeon1900 line, which is considerably faster than even CELL), so the CELL performance alone would be acceptable, BUT, and it's a big but, any Linux version of F@H is likely going to be completely ignorant of the SPEs, meaning you'll get performance similar to a low-end mac of a few years ago... Which brings up a few more issues - Is there even a PPC Linux rev of F@H? I don't think so, but I could be wrong.

Yeah, if a client for Linux might not use the SPE's too well, maybe later on down the line, especially after kernel 2.6.20 becomes mainstream...

I heard something a little while ago, IIRC that an x1900xtx will perform 40 or 48 times faster then a P4 3.2GHz, but don't hold me to it, if so that would indeed by much faster then CELL. I do also remember that the G70/1 series didn't fare to well, we just have to wait and see.
