Thread: New Linux support/info subforum

    Question New Linux support/info subforum

I think it would be a good idea to set up a Linux forum of sorts that can be used to discuss Linux for the PS3 and diagnose problems people may have with it. The reason for this is that there will be a lot of "help" topics created and I think it would be a good idea to create a sub forum in the Sony gaming section to organise these and keep them away from the rest of the topics.

Also, this could be good because it allows numerous FAQ's and Howto's without cluttering up this forum.

    Who's with me?

I guess if there is enough demand an admin will create one.

Yeah, I agree with that idea.
Respect to all those who debate their positions using facts and reason rather than rumor and passion.

Once there is huge demand due to the Linux ecosystem on the PS3 rapidly evolving then a Linux sub-section would be a great idea. However right now much of the homebrew activity has yet to begin.

It will, though and when it does - expect wonders.

Give it about a month. Id say hell yea.

yes but the faster we set it up we may be able to make some howtos and faqs to stop some of the repetitive threads like "how do i get mp3 working" et cetera.

i will write a Linux for dummies faq

I'm all for it. I'll bring it up to an admin and see if we can't get something going.

Voted Yes, so people don't need to search through all the other PS3 stuff people are posting.

Cheers guys! good support so far, i am hoping this will get going. I have finished my faq (obviously i will continue adding stuff) I am hoping that other people will post howtos and things. I won't be able to do a lot because i don't get a ps3 till march...

i was even thinking of a wiki, if thats possible.

Wikis aren't that hard to establish. I was thinking e-mpire should have a wiki of our knowledge base, but this is a good first step to show it's usefulness.

yeah but now that i think of it we won't have enough people to maintain it (for linux that is). It was just a thought.

EDIT: now that i think of it again, a wiki would be cool because it would stop us having a million stickies of howtos and whatnot yet still allow the info to be easily accessed.

    hmmm....

We have a select few experts (I'm really really not one of them).

That is the most ideal wiki contributor-base ever.

    The response is overwhelming

I'm looking forward to someone to create a website featuring Linux software that we could use in PS3 straight away with no additional hassle for those who aren't too familiar with Linux. I've just used it from time to time in the past, and even though I'd love to learn more about its inner workings, I don't want to spend too long to be able to set my system up so that it can do everything I'd want it to do.

    A wiki FTW

I was gonna say wait awhile, then I realized probably the majority of people that may be installing Linux have never used or even seen it (myself included), so if only for how-to's and problem solving stuff it would be a great idea (And any news that may come around).

I agree venomv. (hey that rhymes!)
It would be good if the info was up before the majority of users get their PS3. That way the early adopters can start rolling on some of the issues that are discovered and I can feed off of their hardship.

Yeah, this is definitely a good idea. I imagine that it won't be too long before newbs start to spam the board with questions. As soon as Sony starts shipping more PS3's to retailers, and Average Joe gets his hands on a Linux distro, it'll be ragnarok...
