Crytek confident it could port Crysis

Although no plans are currently in motion, reveals lead artist

Crytek's lead artist, Michael Khaimzon, has revealed that the developer could confidently port highly-anticipated PC title Crysis to PS3 and Xbox 360 - although there are no current plans to do so.

Speaking exclusively to GamesIndustry.biz, Khaimzon said, "I don’t think there would be any problem to convert anything we work on to the next-gen consoles if we decided to.

"We have enough power here, with programmers and artists, to be able to do such a thing. It's just a matter of making the decision."

Khaimzon's comments will only fan the flames of rumour which surround Crysis - a first-person shooter already wowing consumers and critics alike - that publisher Electronic Arts may bring the game to home consoles after release on PC early next year.

Discussing whether the team at Crytek would be interested in working on the next-generation of home consoles, Khaimzon added: "I'm pretty sure it would be interesting for us to do stuff on the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360.

"We would just have to see how much of a sacrifice to the game we'd have to make. Or whether there would be a sacrifice at all, maybe we could find a way to make the game look exactly the same as it does on PC on the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3."

When asked directly whether there was a possibility that Crysis would appear on home consoles, Khaimzon replied: "There might be, the decision isn't mine to make. I don’t know of any official plans to do so, but I know there are rumours and talk, but I couldn't say anything concrete."

WOW, this would cement how much power the consoles have...I don't know if the 360 and PS3 could handle it though. Maybe one or the other.

    +rep, thanks for the link!

For what it's worth, remember that Crytek were the first German developers to get a PS3 devkit.

Even though I think Crysis will end up being highly successful on PC and critically acclaimed, I think console ports will happen just for the sake of allowing more people to play it on decent settings with acceptable performance.

Once Crysis started being positioned as the killer app for Vista (or more specifically MS' new "Games for Windows" initiative) the talk of Crytek's console support seemed to pipe down (initially Cevat Yerli said they were targetting all three platforms concurrently, including Cell customization for their engine). I'm gonna guess we won't hear anything concrete on their console support until after the PC version wraps, and maybe awhile after that.

Except that he said "maybe we could find a way to make the game look exactly the same as it does on PC on the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3".

I won't get my hopes up for this though.

Not really too sure I understand the porting issue to be honest. I think that the PS3 will have games that equal or exceed Crytek's offering (the un-named Naughty Dog title comes to mind as already looking just as good) in the very near future.

As for the X360 - 3 dual cores and a high end graphics card...yup, that should do the trick too.

Should be interesting to watch how the developers progress over time this coming gen...will they dedicate teams to work on each consoles strengths or will they pussy out like UBI (I am still pissed over their comments with AC)...time will tell.

I hope it goes to consoles. But by next year, I'll have my copy, and a souped up computer to handle crysis.

according to the latest psm3 mag they say it`s coming to ps3 they say so on the dvd that comes with the mag.

personally i think they are just hoping for it but the latest edge mag says crytek are working on a secret next gen console game so it might be true.

Crysis looks good while running on what kind of system, exactly? I don't think it's on any kind of reasonably priced system.

I don't think this game will be as big & great as most people forecast it to be, but that may just be me. FarCry had some pretty big flaws from what I hear...

  20. Yeah exactly. It looks amazing on this amazing computer that like 10 people own or can afford, or will even bother with. huzzah.

There's a special kind of nerd though, who thinks computers will overtake mankind in thirty years, changing humanity in ways incomprehensible to us now, ignoring the third of the world without electricity. It gives spiritual significance to technology developed primarily for entertainment and warfare and gives nerds something to obsess over that isn't the crushing vacuousness of their lives.
