Sony Expected To Meet 2006 PS3 Shipment Targets

well.... i'm guessing the PS3 shortage is only for a short while....I dont have to get one at launch if they come up with some by December.

While Sony has already been forced to push back the European launch of its PlayStation 3 thanks to component supply issues, American Technology Research (ATR) nevertheless believes Sony and its production partners will still be on track to deliver almost 2 million PS3 consoles for both North America and Japan this year. According to ATR analyst PJ McNealy, Sony is prepared for "full swing" production of the PS3 at this point.

Sony itself announced it would allocate a total of 500,000 PS3 consoles for both Japan and North America this November. Barring any further difficulties related to components and/or assembly, McNealy predicts that by the end of this year the company will ship a grand total of 800,000 PS3 consoles for Japan, and 1.2 million units for North America.

"Our research indicates that typically 10-20 per cent of the unit shipment forecast will likely still be in the channel (en route) at the end of December and not installed in homes yet. The low end of that range is more likely simply because Sony will likely still be air-freighting and not tanker-shipping PS3s at that point."

Oh boy I hope they actually meet the targets.
It's going to piss off a LOT of people if there are more problems with production and release.

But better done correctly then be rushed. Although they could just keep quiet and talk AFTER they ship the target numbers.

It's been rumored, but people are jumping ship because of it so I don't think it's artificial demand.

I thought it was 1.2 mil. grand total between US and Japan?
in any case, the end of the year shipments aren't my concern. what I want to see is them hitting their March targets of 6 mil. units. if they can make them that faste, I don't think there will be that much shortages whther in online orders or store purchases.

I have to wait and see if they can actually make that much by March and if Europe will indeed have 1.2 for launch day.

Sony now has valid reason to push harder. It's believed Nintendo will up their end of year allocation to as much as 11 million. 2 million have already been produced.

I think Sony will have some issues meeting end of year allocation but after the start of next year will ramp up production considerably. Any shortages from Sony will be fixed far faster than MS did with X360.

Funny that I don't mind that PS3 got delayed in Europe anymore. I'm having so much fun with my PS2 (just bought We Love Katamari

) and I'm going to be so busy until the end of the year and well beyond March working and earning money and whatnot that I don't need a PS3 just yet. It would have been nice to play it this year, but I've got a lot of things to do before I commit a considerable amount of time to it and the European launch will be the best launch ever (to me) thanks to the "wait", so I'm fine.

I'm really not bothered at the moment about the delay, just means more quality titles at launch to choose from (is this a good or bad thing, I don't have endless pockets of cash LOL). I love my PS2 and want to milk its use right up till I do a part exchange with my PS1, PS2 and XBox for PS3. As PS3 is compatable for both previous consoles, why have them laying unused in a box somewhere taking up space in my already cramped room? I'll look forward to peoples impressions of it from across seas. Just don't spoil it for the rest of us eh? :wink:

I agree with the PS2 VG. I sold my PS2 for discount on PS3 as you know so the BC is hurting me more than others in that sense.

Shows how valuable it really is with BC.

And i have seriously considered to buy a new PINK PS2 also and upload loads with Photos of me in skirt etc..

But in the end the games i really want comes in spring so i don't care that much because of it.

To name another thing i esp have been thinking of is the demo-section that hopefully contains some great game-demos online, that it matured and Dev's have had time to put up a demo/demos of some launch-games. Its a little like "turn the bad to something good" .

isn't it? can't you make a shooting target and it will still be your target even if you can't hit it?

that is different from goals or set targets and the likes. a target for me is what someone want's to reach and there is a good possibility that it could be done. sometimes you come short of it, sometimes you hit it, and sometimes you even surpass it.

Well since there've been 2 major shakeups for the PS3's release (delay from Spring 06 to Fall 06, and the European delay/cut in shipments), I think Sony's already lowered the target enough to the point that if we hear they can't make that target, it makes you want to ask, "What the hell can you meet!?"

I know I'll be personally frustrated if Sony can't keep up with their already significantly lowered expectations
