PS2 - does it deserve all of it's sales?

The ps2 the most contoversal system of all time its system specs aren't that great, it rellies on third party games to live, and it does not have any exclusive franchises "we all thought final fantay would be" and yet its sales are more than the gcn and xbm sales put together none of it's games have high scores on rating sites except gta and finalfantasy games so does it deserve this many sales.

Hell no. Ps2 is the most overhyped console of all time....i mean they had diddly squat launch titles and they still have diddly squat quality games (dont get me started with GTA and Madden)

Well, PS2 deserves its sales in that it does a good job of catering to the casual audience. But considering the quality of the system (with the ridiculous three month warranty that MS and Sony insist upon) and the high prices, I'm going to say no.

Edit: and as for review sites, the PS2 has scored higher than both the xbox and the gamecube for a large number of games. Go to Editor's choice on IGN for proof of this. In second comes GameCube with some excellent reviews for Metroid, ED, SSBM, SMS. And in last place is xbox with only Halo and Splinter Cell.

Do you know why games are scored higher for the PS2? Because the XBox and GCN simply get ports of the PS2 version, which are absolutely nothing in terms of quality of what they should be if they were built from the ground-up for the XBox or GCN; more is expected out of the two systems.

yes they do deserve them they worked hard to sell systems. Theyn got the ps2 out like a year bofore CG or X box so ya gotta give em some credit

yes but nintendo says they had the gamecube ready when ps2 came out but wanted to do more with the n64

I Say, since Sony has done well in having the best variety of games on there systems, it does deserve it. If The Type of Genre you like isnt on PS2, its probably not worth it.

Once apon a time, cartriges were the best way to do console games. Nintendo experimented with CDs, with deals both with Sony and Philips. Having betrayed Sony by developing the CDi with Philips, Sony took their SNES add-on CD drive, called the PlayStation (PS) and made it a stand-alone console (PSX). At the time, there was little evidence that gaming would so dramatically change during the N64/PSX generation such that the larger storage capacity of CDs (larger because a similar capacity cartrige would cost a fortune) was necessary, with games going for hours of FMV and redbook audio. The capacity of CDs, and their relatively low cost, was appealing to third parties that therefore flocked to develop for the console that originally didn't appear to have much of a chance in hell. All of this support led the PSX to sell like hotcakes, taking a very prominent lead over N64.

PS2 came along riding on the coattail of PSX. Because PSX did so well, gamers gave thier right nut to have a PS2. It was vastly inferior hardware next to GCN and Xbox, but it was the sequel to PSX. PS2 did nothing special to earn its sales.

most of the ps2 games out there are touted to no end and then they suck royal ass. as was the case with devil may cry 2. it was way too easy. ps2 makes good games and some are great (red faction 1, devil may cry 1) but most of them are just rush outs to get money and the sequels blow ass

You do realize that Ps2 came out a full year before GCN and Xbox right? That means the competitors had longer to put out better hardware. I don't get your point.

PS2 is overrated, definately, and I think we all know that.

But it does suit the casual gamer very well (GTA and other crappy games). But hey, maybe I'm just being biased.

Oh, and I think that GCN and Xbox should be battling it out for first.

ps2 should be lower than both gc and xbox, it doesn't compare in graphics or many other things. PS2 has a big library and thats about it. The few games that Cube has are a lot better than most of the ps2 games..Xbox should be number 1, since it's like an upgraded ps2..with a better online plan
