Toys R Us Disses PS3, Picks Wii...

Every year Toys R Us puts together a "hot list" of holiday toys that seems to highlight what is decidedly not hot. This year, the toy company finally decided that video games are worthy of their list.

For the first time in the history of the list, Toys R Us included a console. That's right, no Playstations, no Gamecubes or NESes or Xboxes ever made their list.

In deciding to pick a console for the list, the company has waded hip-deep into the game wars declaring that the Wii should make the list, but that the PS3 just isn't main stream enough for them.

"The PlayStation 3 is really geared to a savvy gaming enthusiast," said Kathleen Waugh, a spokeswoman for Toys "R" Us, of the decision to add the Wii to the list. "The Wii system appeals to young kids as well as adults."
The spokesperson went on to say that "one of Toys "R" Us' criteria of adding an item to its hot list is knowing it will have sufficient stock of the item for the holiday season, and she said that Toys "R" Us was able to ensure that by "taking a leadership position on the launch of Wii.""

Hmmm, that's interesting. I've always wondered if the Hot LIst is advertising in disguise or the genuine product of market analysis and such. That last comment makes me think more the former.

The only time I walk in the store is for the buy 2 get 1 sale in Oct. or holiday shopping for my little sis.

I actually bought my PS2 and a few games from here, pre-ordered, good times.

Having said that, this news doesn't really come as any surprise.

Well it's a lot more feasible for parents to buy their little children Wiis rather than a monster PS3...

Makes perfect sense for "Toys R' US". Most of it's business is for 10 and under and I'm sure kids that young will get a Wii instead of the other two.

I know if I had kids real young thats what I would get them if I had to choose a system.

It's fine anyway, I dont really think the PS3 is geared towards anyone below the ages of 12 - 14 imo. If you believe your 12 year old needs a PS3 then go to Bestbuy or Gamestop and get them one there, cause that's where they will have it (or would have had it after it's sold out).

Yea makes since to me. Wii is more affordable...so its more like a lower priced toy where the PS3 is more a investment..and comparable to a home entertainment device. So its has the capability to be a spur of the moment purchase in addition to having a buzz around it all ready which=hot list.

yea no kidding if my sister bought her 8yearold a PS3 she would kick it to make the lights blink... better get her a plastic pony.

I bought my PS2 from Toys R Us 2 weeks after launch, they were the only ones who had stock, They do have a impact on sales.

it`s not 100% true at all i bet bill gates gets one for his kids. lol

anyway when all those ten and unders have had their Wii`s(?) awhile there will probably be a few injuries like little bro putting little sisters eye out or throwing the nunchuk through the tv or window
the toys`r`us will be known as injuries`R`us. lol

It's cool, like everyone has pointed out, they are geared towards the pre-teen and under kids, and overall, I don't think they are as relevant as they used to be, esp back in the 80's.

This is perfectly fair, makes perfect sense for Toys R Us. If I were wanting to advertise the product out of the big three to get the most sales the Wii would be it. Consumer friendly price, stylish look, the brand name... The Wii definitely has all the makings of a product that flies off the shelves. I bet with the right advertising campaign it will for sure.

I think there is only one in my area that is still open, but it is kind of run down and isn't the safest place. It's cool though since not many people go there then they always have whatever game or system you need in stock. If I can't find a Wii anywhere else on launch day it will be there.

This makes sense for Toys R Us. They're a toy store. The Wii is clearly marketed to a younger audience than the PS3 (and is more of a "toy"). It would be something if Best Buy had chosen to more prominently feature the Wii than PS3. I'm absolutely fine with Wii doing well with 6-15 year olds (competing with the PS2 in price after a few years). In fact, if I had a 6 year old I'd rather he play cartoony Mario than Resistance. It means we'll see the same types of games on Wii we saw on GC, maybe an occasional "M" game like RE4 (Red Steel for instance) to appeal to the upper edge of their target audience. I'm convinced there are enough gamers 16-35ish, like me, to make the PS3 a success...

Funny I have been to a Toys R us in an affluent shopping center, and they too are run down, just nasty looking inside.

They just have to watch out for kids hurting themselves. LOL
