Thread: General PS3 Question?

  1. #1

PS3 upconvert, region encoding, and codecs....

Does (or will) the PS3 upconvert DVD's the way other Blu-Ray players do?

Yes, ofcourse it will! It's a full fledged BD player like any other on the market.

A Magnolia center rep (in BB) told me yesterday that according to the information he got from Sony, the PS3 will NOT be upconverting standard DVD's. I told him that he was wrong and I was 99% sure that it would. I'm just double checking with you PS3 addicts.

It hasn't been confirmed 100%, but a Sony exec (I forget who) mentioned that PS3 should have full upconvert capabilities. We'll just have to wait though for the official release of that info, since even though it was 'confirmed' by an exec, it doesn't mean it's the solid corporate plan.

I've also heard it from a few others sources, but alas, I cannot remember where from.

  6. The PS3 will also turn interlaced images to progressive images.

    Yes. Upconvert a DVD (480p) to 1080i or 1080p.

It was in the E3 Q&A PS3 interview.

I believe that it's another exec quote, Someone from Sony stated that the PS3 would de-interlase PS2/1 games, as far as I remember. I don't think it was ever mentioned that it was possible during BD-ROM playback, or games.

A general question from me about region coding:

Will the PS3 be able to play PS and PS2 titles no matter what region coding they have? (e.g. JAP/NTSC PS games and PAL PS2 games on a US PS3)

I know nothing has been mentioned yet, but I have the bad feeling, that this won't be possible.

My feeling is, and I'm often right...

PS3 games - Region free (Whoohoo!)
PS2 games - Region coded(Nothing to back this up, just guessing)
    PS1 games - ditto
DVDs - Old DVD region your system was bought in, 1 for USA etc
Blu Rays - Region A for USA/Japan etc

Obviously I'd love backdated PS2/PS1 region free, but I guess they're just adding a region locked component from a slim PS2.

Upscaling DVD Players: take your pooey low res DVD image, bump it up to high res (720p,1080i,1080p), clean up the image a little, and if you're lucky, pump it out a sexy digital output to your TV so no noise is introduced. (HDMI, DVI-D)

After all that you end up with an image that's a bit better than out an ordinary DVD player, but nothing compared to the new Hi Def formats. There's no substitute for 25/30/50GB of movie data and new codecs.

I've got two upscaling DVD players here, XBox 360 and a Samsung Blu Ray player, and they're pretty nice things to watch DVDs on, but I think I lot of people wouldn't notice the different between these players and the 480p DVD player in my living room.

Yup, the 360, with the recent patch and VGA cable upscales. The patch did wonders for DVD playback. 360 is a pretty nice DVD player now.

But I've got a better one.

Betamax, that's that format that failed because it was only supported by one manufacturer and very few studios while VHS was supported by nearly everyone else.

Yup, except Betamax actually had better picture quality than VHS, Blu Ray is going to win out on picture quality. Same codecs but more storage space, better transfer rate. Going to wipe the floor with HD DVD...

As soon as Sony stop playing silly buggers...
