PS2 mod chip question

If I wanted to play an imported game from...say Japan, and my PS2 needed a mod chip to do so, if I were to buy the chip, the game would play in japanese, wouldn't it?

Or do they translate it too?

Or am I just dumb?

The game will be completly Japanese.
Some games, and this is rare, do have an option for English subtitles or text.
But since it would be PAL you can import from Australia/Europe if the game comes out there first. -And that has a better chance of english text.
