    Does anyone know ?

Let's say I was a game maker. I was making the a long, great game, with many locates. And lets say I was rich. I had the money to spend on a game as I wish. So I'm willing to spend 100 million on a game. Does anyone how how many copies would I have to sell before making a profit ?

Cause if one Shenmue costs 20 million to make... and I don't think Sega sold over 5 million consoles (Dreamcasts). That would mean Sega lost ALOT of money, right ? Ok... If you spend 20 millino you have to make it... So 20 million / 50 (price per game = 40,000 ? So if you were to sell 40,001 you'd make a profit ?

You also have to consider the fact that shops take a good piece of that 50$ and that producing the game cost a little too, I would say 80.000+ copies to make a profit on a 20 million game.

Cost of development, cost of medium, advertising, shipping, distribution, wharehousing, retailer profit, etc....that leaves you with very little per game sold for actual profit.

In reality, few games turn a real profit these days.

If you spent $100 million, you'd probabaly have to sell 60 million to break even. No single console game has even come close. Super Mario Borthers 3 still holds the record with 17 million.

^ No Viper. That record was broken by Shenmue. It costed 20 Million to make. It's in the world record. So I'm thinking, "Whose stupid enough to make a game that costs soo much and wont even make you a profit ?" So a game of 20 million would need to sell at least 10 to break even, right ? But the Dreamcast never sold 10 Million. No game, a side from Zelda OOT has sold over 10 million.

No, Shenmue didn't do jack shit. He didn't say Super Mario Bros. 3 held the record for costing the $17 million, but that it held the record for selling 17 million copies. No single video game has ever beaten that record. The original SMB sold over 40 million units, but it was also bundled with NES systems. Similarly, Tetris sold over 33 million units, but again it was bundled with the Game Boy. The record for the game selling the most units without being bundled was SMB3, which my source has at 18 million units. Shenmue might have cost more to make, but didn't sell nearly that many copies.

    * Super Mario Bros. (NES) is the official Guinness Book of World Records record holder for best-selling game, at over 40 million units, although it was sold packaged along with the NES. The Mario series is also the top-selling series, with over 200 million games sold.

    * Similarly, Tetris for the Game Boy sold 33 million units, having been packaged with the Game Boy.

    * The best selling game not bundled with a console is Super Mario Bros. 3, also for the NES, selling 18 million units.

    * The best selling computer game is The Sims, having sold over 8 million units alone and 24 million counting expansion packs.

A bestseller list will necessarily exclude non-commercial games, and games such as Minesweeper and Solitaire which are present on more than 200 million desktop PCs as part of Microsoft Windows.

By comparison, Shenmue only sold 1.18 million units. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...nd_video_games)

^ NOOO !!!! I can't believe Shenmue sold only 1 million. So Sega lost money !

Thanks for the links !!! According to the "best selling" link. One of the things that it shows is that graphics come in last place. It's shocking how sooo many games are old, and people still love them.

^ It was because they repeatedly where lossing money that they became a third-party...

Based on that link two generations of pokemon beat SMB3, unless you divede the numbers based on the idea that every Pokemon owner bought each color version?

What I liked with the top 20-list though is the fact that most of the games are Nintendo first-party games, yay.

^You have to divid Pokemon up accordingly. It's a total of 4 different games (Red, Green and Yellow in Japan and Red, Blue and Yellow everywhere else) that outsold SMB3. From a logical standpoint, no one of the 3 games outsold SMb3.

I don't really agree with that since each of those color versions is the same game just with minor differences. Some of the more hardcore Pokemon owners did invest in more than one version, but it is still really one game despite it having three alternatives and it wouldn't be fair to divide the numbers in three or two - a 20% subtraction per version seems more realistic.

keep in mind that Wikipedia is edited by anyone. don't base your whole beliefe in a Wiki article.

as for that, I have read an article from a very good source that wasn't a gaming publication. I forgot what the name was. it was one of those famous mags or newspapers. in any case, they said the best seeling game series is the Sims. the second best is GTA.
this was even used in an argument in one of those court/legal issues with violent games. the one defending gaming said that the best selling game of all time, The Sims, wasn't even a violent game. he added that less than %20 (IIRC) of all games are M rated.
One of the things that it shows is that graphics come in last place.
well, keep in mind that some of these games looked leaps beyond what they do today. Duck Hunt, back in the day, was a hunting simulator.

Yes, that is probably right from a computer-only view (console numbers not included).

The Sims is only the best sellin-series because they are in the habit of releasing games on a monthly basis. Anyone know how many sims titles their are total now? There's nothing left to sim.
