    PS3 - Made In Japan

According to an article on Digitimes Sony will not be outsourcing production of the PS3, yet.

    http://www.digitimes.com/systems/a20060410PB209.html

Sony president Ryoji Chubachi indicated during a recent event in Taiwan that Sony's PS3 will be produced in Japan and the company has not placed orders with Foxconn and Asustek, according to the Chinese-language Apple Daily. However, he said Sony's game consoles may be produced overseas in the future. Although it has not targeted any OEMs, Taiwan is still Sony's best OEM partner, he was quoted by the paper as saying.

Yeah saw that yesterday. Not all that surprising, though I wonder if the 'million a month' volume will be reached during that Japan-only production run, or if outsourcing will have begun by then to reach that figure.

The way it is worded makes it seem that it would be a while before they would outsource production, but how hard is it going to be to meet their goals without bringing others into the mix?

Well, the way it's worded makes it seem that it will be a while, but I think the tone of the wording almost has to do with a semi-apology of sorts to Taiwan that they won't be producing it from the start, and that those rumors were untrue.

That's how I read it at least.

BUT, if indeed Sony is able to step it up to a million within the confines of Japan then more power to them. I personally would feel a little better if my own launch PS3 came from an internal Sony plant rather than a manufacturing partner.

    Fixed it and QFT!

I agree, especially since he was addressing a Taiwanese audience. He was just as well reassuring them that they are still on top of the list for future outsourcing.

Oh, most definitely, I would much rather get my launch PS3 from a Sony plant. No doubt!! November seems so far away!!!

So you guys think this is a good thing if Sony can pull off the numbers they're hoping for? Obviously the PS2 had the dreaded DRE problem with a lot of early consoles -- you think Sony internally producing PS3s would keep big problems like that from popping up?

I'm not familiar with manufacturing companies or anything like that so I don't know what the difference would be...

No, I don't think that problem - a disc read error problem - would be avoided by assembling the consoles internally. That will depend entirely on what BD-ROM drives are used. It will however likely increase the chances that the consoles are built to spec, thus possibly reducing other issues.

Talk for the 360 for example is that a lot of the heatsinks on the ones that overheated were placed on the chips incorrectly. Now, I don't know if that was ultimately proven to be true or not, but issues like that are more like what I would be hoping to avoid.

Nah most of the components will be Japanese made, and that includes RSX and Cell.

Maybe you mean designed, but I don't know.

The chip fabs themselves, save for East Fishkill, are located in Japan and are Sony's own.

If your talking about that PC Guru that opend up the 360 and said he had found the problem with overheating of some units to do with the foil over the the chips.... kinda right but then a week later MS issued a statement that thats how they were ment to be. Of course we could be talking complete different sitiuation

But one would assume that a Japan production run would be better for the consumer.

Made in Japan sound soooo much better then the usually 99.99% tech that has an inscription "Made in Taiwan" or "Made in China"..

And as been said earlier i would feel safer of my precious, my precious..:angelgrin
