Eurogamer plans E3 TV coverage; Minkley joins as TV editor
    Rob Fahey 10:50 06/04/2006
Quality videogame programming promised for new online TV service

Britain's top videogames website publisher, Eurogamer Network, has announced its plans for extensive video coverage of the E3 show in May, with the initiative being spearheaded by new hire Johnny Minkley.

The recently launched Eurogamer TV service, which serves high quality streaming video content to users without the need for any special software or browser plug-ins, is set to expand from serving trailers and game footage to include TV style content broadcast from the show.

Under the guidance of Minkley, who formerly served as editor of UK trade magazine MCV and editor of ComputerAndVideoGames.com, as well as presenting the video games section for the popular Jo Whiley Show on BBC Radio 1, a range of custom TV content will be created, starting at E3.

Eurogamer TV plans to bring two film crews to Los Angeles for E3, providing high quality streaming video from all the key events and stands at the videogames industry's most important annual gathering.

"Johnny's decision to take the Editor's role on Eurogamer TV is great news for the company, and we're very excited about the future of the service," according to Eurogamer Network business development manager Pat Garratt.

"We are committed to video as one of the key parts of our offering going forward," he continued, "and we firmly believe Johnny has the experience, drive and vision to make Eurogamer TV the definitive destination for games-related video content on the internet."

Even in the first month of its inception, Eurogamer TV has been a huge success; over 100,000 videos have been served to users, and advertisers on the service have included Electronic Arts, Square Enix and Activision.

"The potential for Eurogamer TV is spectacular," explained Minkley. "We have the opportunity to take the whole concept of video content for games to a completely new level. Only the internet can offer programming on demand in this way."

Eurogamer Network publishes GamesIndustry.biz as well as the Eurogamer.net and Eurogamer TV websites.

GameSpot usually has a better coverage, so I'll stick with them.

Gamespot's E3 coverage isn't free unfortunately. Is EurogamerTV's coverage free or I'm just being too optimistic :P

  6. During E3 I don't know if Eurogamer TV will be free or not. But it is at the minute. And very impressive it is too. I think gamesindustry.biz ran an article on how they (Eurogamer) had upgraded their servers with some fancy kit. Should point out that both those sites are under the same parent company I think. You can choose the playback bandwidth you want depending on your connection speed. All in all quite nice and registration free.

As an aside, I recently got a 360 with a few games to tide me over til November. Doing some research beforehand on Kameo from various sites Eurogamer stood out cos they gave it 5 or 6 out of 10. I ignored their advice as the majority of the other sites were scoring it around 7 or 8. Let me tell you - Eurogamer was right. So props to them.

I am willing to spend money to see good quality footage from E3 and more, but I can't consider IGN or Gamespot "good quality" anyway. IGN videos are poorly encoded and they never seem to keep the original framerate (every video is encoded at 30fps). They don't even seem to be able to get sharp picture quality in any case either.

If PSINext gives us free and "good quality" videos by semipro or professional standards, I will be incredibly happy!

As for my appreciation for the said coverage of E3. Here is the funniest thing I've ever seen videogames related.

Apparently some clan of nerdiest folks ever were holding an in-game World of Warcraft funeral of a reallife person , yes a real life death of a WoW member but its funeral inside the videogame. WTF!!! We need a new term to describe that level of nerdiness of cloud level 9. Anyways, a rival clan hears the farse of this funeral ceremony and stages an ambush while the funeral should be in progress. A must watch hilarity ensues!!! ROFL!!!

Following is the video of one WoW clan clashing another clans nerdy funeral ceremony.

    Google video

    Filefront high-res video (150mb)

    Ultra high-res video (400+mb)

I'd say it's a must watch for 18+ folks, some tongue in cheek songs with adult tones. Extremely funny stuff. I feel sorry for the nerds though. Doesn't change the fact that it's die-hard funny to see it all happening in this video. Brilliantly done in fraps.

I think a select few already know... I'm one of them. And I really hope the 'crew' can pull it off. WHOOPS. Hope I didn't say too much.

But I am really excited to see how it is done.

I think I can figure it out since I've heard a few things about this, but I prefer not to know more details since I always prefer to be surprised Way to go, PSINext!

IGN always has live sreams and free downloads. of course, better qualities are available for their subscribers. I have downloading the entire Sony presentation last E3 from them. theough I had all the short videos, I didn't have the complete thing, so I downloaded that too.

plus, Lik-sang willbe getting a preorder for the annual E3 Access DVD as soon as they start offering.

I actually meant the videos available for IGN insiders only. I subscribed last year for their E3 coverage and I was very disappointed with the quality.

I remember someone shared their mms link of Gamespot's live videofeed on some forum and people just flocked on it like crazy. So did I. Man, gamespot people were mad funny and almost every gamespot editor was doing a preview of showfloor games. Developers stopping by the stall to give interviews and show demos etc. Overall, the final editorial gathering with everyone chipping in their fav of the entire 3 day show was worth every second of that pirated link. hehe

Black and F.E.A.R stood out amongst the best of the show with almost every editor.
