Thread: Any idea what PS3 can do to PS2 games?

  1. Any idea what PS3 can do to PS2 games?

I couldn't find any speculation about these things.
Can PS3 make the PS2 games looking better and how?
    -Better framerate?
    -Calculate better lightning and shadows?
    -Loading faster?
    -Increasing AA or FSAA?
    -Sharper textures?
    -Something else?

The games may infact run a bit faster and if you have a hdtv you can probably expect some upscaling on the res. other than that your probably not going to be noticing to much.

There's quite a lot about it in this thread:

Faster loading times, getting rid of some slowdowns, resolution upscaling and applying some more filters to a greater extent seem possible to me. I'd be really glad if these options were available on PS3 for PS2 games.

I guess things like greater draw distance or all games running at 60fps won't happen though.

Yeah draw distance and 60fps arent going to happen, at least Im not sure as to how they would.

Some developers could release patches for some games to enable those features, but I don't really expect this to happen many times, if any.

Right but outside of a patch its not going to be a plug and play feature. I seriously doubt we see any devs patching old gen games but you never know. Is the PS3 bc through emulation, I was wonderinag about this due to the hardware and architecture found in the PS3??

It'd probably do to the PS2 games what the PS2 did to PSone games. Smooth out the textures and speed up load-times.Though this time they should make the option more prevalent and not hide it like on the PS2.

On the 360 what I have seen is faster loads, way better AA and espacially when upscaled, Plus their is a little better draw distance. You can also see fine details a lot better in high def, anybody that has played GT4 on a regular TV then played it at 1080p has seen this. So that is what I would expect, HD by itself helps about 20% increase.

^^^ GT4 only runs at 1080i... still rocks though
    We the people...

  11. AFAIK, not even GT4 is running at 1080i, but upscaling a lower resolution up to that.

Whoops... to much time talking about the PS3 has made that "p" stick in my mind, but yeah I ment 1080i and yes it still looks sweet.

@MetalSphere: It does infact run at 1080i. This has been discussed in to many threads to mention.

We don't know yet, but I think it will have the PS2 processors on it, because the PS2 has the PS1 processors.

I'd like to think 0 load times period since pretty much any PS1 game can easily fit into system RAM. Although load times are sometimes necessary since they give out tips and objectives sometimes.

I don't think upscaling to 1080p would be very difficult, though you would still have to deal with the low resolution textures.
