    Is Nintendo being hypocritical?

With Opera and the TV Tuner... doesnt that draw their system away from being a system solely for gaming? They always say that is their focus.... now they seem to be going against their philosphy?

I was just thinking about it today.

The way I see it, they can do that with the DS becuase it's their third pillar. They can do whatever they want with it. It's not like you have to buy that stuff. I'd rather have Nitnendo branded stuff than some crap from madcatz or something like that anyways.

  3. Actually they said that the entertainment part of the system should come second, hence its late arrival after the games have been well established.

    Games first then entertainment.......

Plus they said that they wouldn't make you pay for something that isn't necessary.

You can either get it or not

I think the way Nintendo sees it (or at least how i see it) is that you can choose whether or not you want it. With the PSP, no matter what, you have to pay for all the other functions.

Agreed. Nintendo wants to satify people, this is one of many plans. Its not like you have to buy it either so your making both parties happy.

To an extent, yes, but I think much of this was mostly pushed by the partner company, not by Nintendo.

The main philosophy behind the "games only" thing was that the HARDWARE was games-only. If you want to play movies and music, buy the addon that does that. If you want to watch TV, buy the addon that does that. If you want to surf the web, buy the addon that does that. If you want to train your brain, buy the software that does that.

But, if all you want is a good game system, Nintendo's not gonna force you to pay $250 for all that crap you DON'T want.

Big thanks to Ihsiin for the sig!

The TV Tuner seems to be almost a cellphone spin off from what ive read, using a new kinda of broadcasting.

  11. You guys do realise that you pay the price of the hardware with the PSP and that the extra features come from nothing but software. I don't see how, in this aspect, you are "paying" for those extra features. It's not like the software/os development of the PSP costs an immense amount of the $250.

Just a flawed argument you guys are making there.

However, i do find it interesting that Nintendo is doing this browser thing now..it's very odd. You have to keep in my that Datel made the media thing, not Nintendo. The PSP screen is less demeaning to video quality anyways..so i don't think I'd be pleased with the DS media player.

It's just easier to not say "PSP".

Well, the AVC codec included in firmware 2.00 requires quite a bit of horsepower that the DS probably doesn't have, so for video playback, the hardware needs to be powerful. So in a way, the hardware is required to playback videos.

Agreed, I don't think the DS has the ability to play the movies in their original glory, but after a bit of compression and such it works, although Nintendo's official media players haven't been for the DS. So therefore their movie capabilities suck. They need to make the next release of the Play-Yan not stick out of the GBA slot on the DS Lite. It's that simple. It's already begging for it with the superbright screen.

Didn't that Q and A thing say Nintendo came to Opera?

  16. Yes it did, and this was a couple weeks after an interview with one of the game publications with Reggie about disrupting the industry. He said that the idea of the DS going on the web (with the stylus and dual screen) would be a disruptive force in the industry (meaning a good thing).

  17. Yeah Nintendo is focusing on the most important things first.

These add-ons such as the web browser and TV tuner don't come standard with the system, increasing it's price. Nintendo is giving you a choice to have these add on, but it's primarily a gaming system.

  19. Can you read Mathx? The hardware is already in the PSP for gaming. They then put software in there (for FREE to YOU the CONSUMER via FIRMWARE UPDATES) to utilize this hardware to do more (such as web browsing and h.264 codec processing). I don't see what your argument is other than repetitive.

I also doubt that an ARM-7 and ARM-9 can do h.264 codec videos at a decent resolution. I need to look up the specs of each processor so i can more fully understand the DS...I feel bad about how little I know about it and the PSP.
