Thread: Samsung: To Manufacture PS3 XDR Memory?

  1. Question Samsung: To Manufacture PS3 XDR Memory?

Sony readies 8GB player with Samsung support

REPORTS FROM ASIA said that Samsung has won a major deal to supply memory to Sonyfor use in an 8GB player.

But that's not the only memory win Samsung's likely to make. According to a Bloomberg report, the Korean chaebol will also make the bulk of the memory models used in the Playstation 3. This uses memory modules using Rambus technology. Playstation Portables use NAND flash.

The news sent shares of Samsung soaring by 14 per cent on the South Korea bourse. Bloomberg estimates that if the Sony report is correct, that will soak up 20 per cent of Samsung's memory production. µ

    Edit: Manufacture not Manufactor

Samsung is the leading supplier of GDDR-3, I actually think they'll be supplying a greater portion of the PS3's GDDR-3 than they will the XDR, though they might edge out Toshiba and Elpida in the XDR space as well in terms of percentage supplied.

Samsung Electronics today announced that it has produced the first 90-nanometer production samples of 512-Megabit XDR (eXtreme Data Rate) DRAM, the fastest memory for multimedia applications.
The Samsung 512Mb XDR DRAM can transmit data with up to 9.6 GigaBytes per second, 12 times faster than DDR400 memory and 6 times faster than leading RDRAM (PC 800) devices. It uses advanced 90-nanometer memory technology to achieve a peak operating speed of 4.8Gbps at 1.8 volts.
XDR DRAM from Samsung will be adopted for Sony Computer Entertainment’s next generation computer entertainment system, Playstation 3.

    512?
That's refering to mega-BIT, not mega-BYTE. Basically the modules of which memory is composed are rated in bits, not bytes. So that gives a meg size of 64MB per module, or 256 MB of XDR for four 512Mb modules.

  5. Samsung makes great memory.
They also make cosair memory for PC'S.
