NCsoft "actively developing" for consoles - but not Xbox 360

TJ Kim confirms plans for leading MMORPG firm to move to consoles

Korea-based online gaming giant NCsoft is preparing to launch titles on next-generation consoles, according to chief executive Tack Jin Kim, who confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz that development work is already underway.

The company, which is behind the world's largest massively multiplayer game series, Lineage, as well as titles including City of Heroes and Guild Wars, has until now focused exclusively on the PC platform.

However, Kim - who is founder and president as well as CEO of the firm - openly confirmed that the company is now "actively developing" for next-generation consoles, which he considers key to building the firm up in markets outside Korea.

NCsoft is already the largest gaming company in its native country, and its titles are proving a major draw at this week's G* games expo at the Kintex exhibition centre near the capital city, Seoul.

Kim did not discuss specifics of the company's development work on next-generation consoles, nor did he reveal which platforms the firm is working on - but sources close to NCsoft's European division revealed that Xbox 360 is not part of the company's plans at the moment, suggesting that the PS3 is the target platform for NCsoft's first console titles.

Speaking today at NCsoft's head offices in Seoul, Kim also confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz that a European development location is part of the firm's plan for the future, joining the company's other development studios - NC HQ Studios in Seoul, Guild Wars creators Arena.Net in California and Richard Garriott's NC Austin Studio

I really hope Tabula Rasa comes to PS3, even though as of right now I havn'r heard them even mention consoles. Auto-assult looks really cool too, a destructable MMO, not sure they are gonna pull that off but if they do it could be awesome.

  4. Maybe they'll make Guild Wars 2 for ps3 and you wont have to pay to play.... that would be a dream come true for me... Good Find!!!

Guildwars is an 'okay' MMO but imo it does not compare to the likes of World of Warcraft... Always room for improvment i say

  6. more good news. Asian devs are certainly taking an interest in the coming gen of consoles and that is always good news. toadd to this announcement, PS3 already has the Korean Webzen incredible looking MMORPGEndless Saga, and Chinese devs PS3 game (forgot the name of both dev and game).

looks like PS3 will have good MMORP support. Asians are MMORPG fanatics!

Check the bolded part of this quote out, totally unexpected:

NCSOFT GOES NEXT-GEN WITHOUT THE 360

"A definite lack of commitment at Microsoft to online gaming" fingered as the reason

17:31 In a recent announcement, CEO of NCSoft TJ Kim outlined plans to develop games for both next-gen PCs and consoles. What games or indeed which systems are currently unknown, but one machine said not to be within their crosshairs is the Xbox 360.

With MMO games doing huge business in the East, the news could be seen as a blow to Microsoft, who're keen to crack the territory with the Xbox 360 after lackluster Xbox sales, particularly given the huge success NCSoft has seen with MMO franchises such as City of Heroes, Lineage and Guild Wars.

So, is there a reason behind NCsoft's apparent decision to be snub Microsoft, a company which has arguably the best online console infrastructure to date?

Although the official line from NCsoft is that the company "cannot specify explicitly what their console plans are", Geoff Heath, CEO of NCsoft Europe told MCV last Friday, "I don't want to spoil the party but our feeling is there's a definite lack of commitment at Microsoft to online gaming with 360. It's forcing us to consider what we should be doing. For a start it's not got a [guaranteed] hard drive, but generally the commitment is not there. It's a real shame."

With more and more developers jumping on the Xbox Live bandwagon, it's surprising to hear one suggest there's a "lack of commitment at Microsoft to online gaming with 360." Although Heath's comments about the Xbox 360s hard drive might go so way to explaining NCsoft's reticence to develop for the console, it's an issue others such as Square have overcome with the upcoming Final Fantasy XII.

We've asked NCsoft for further clarification on these comments, so when we get them, so shall you.

Makes sense, Sony have "liberated" online, where publishers are free to set up their own charging structure, XBox is chained to XBox Live.

So expect PS3 to be the MMORPG machine of choice.

Sony has a very well dev/publisher relations. one of the strong aspects of Sony's business is 'freedom'. let the publishers control their own games.

but what does interest me in this situation is that NCsoft said they left X2 for the lack of online commitment. my question is why didn't they still stuck wih X2? does that mean they found something in PS3 they prefered better? does that mean SOny has 'the' commitment they were looking for (doesn't have to be HDD alone). hmm...

If you notice something about Sony, when they do something, and it's usually when they copy something that you have better than what they have, they will alter the idea so much to where it becomes their own. This is one reason I'm really intertested in seeing what they will do with their next online server.

and that is why I am alwyas excited about anything new Sony does.
