So, compression is a problem ???........looks like good old BD will have space to spare. It makes no sense to expect nxt gen graphics for , say a GTA type game, when SA already takes a full DVD in storage.
Even with fantastic compression, 9.6 gig looks like it just aint enough....
I dont know why ppl insist to post 360's stuff on a ps3 forum!? why man!? why??

I think people post it because it strengthens the position that Sony made the right move with using a next-gen format.
I'll change the thread title and set things right.
You may want to post this in the XBox forum as well though Cartier.

Nice one XB! :P hehehe

I dont thnk MS was in a position to chose anything other than DVD for their format really. Granted I would much rather see a larger capacity disc but it wont be long before we see games released on 2 dvds. However, with massive games like Oblivion only requiring one dvd then I honestly dont see why it would be necessary for some time, of course that could be an apples to oranges comparison.
Whatever Microsoft reason for not using a higher storage format beyond DVD-9 is debatable; my opinion is that Microsoft didn’t want to pay Sony & the Blu-Ray Consortium royalty fees. Now you have Bill Gates claiming both Blu-Ray & HD-DVD will fail against online downloading (Movies, Music, ECT…) system. Yeah, after making a big stink about the glories of HD-DVD format, he’s now calling it a failure. Sounds like sour grapes to me, now that his beloved HD-DVD format is going the way of the dodo bird. Sorry Bill not everyone in the world can afford a T3 line or better to download a HD-Movie or a game with 15+ gigs of data content.

Just days ago i was hearing that companies were backing away from BD-ROMS and today i hear several stories about DVD-9s not being enough and that Warner signed onto the BD train.

That just goes to show, when hearing news it's always good to do some research to put it all in context. Indeed, blu-ray is making massive inroads at the moment, quite in spite of Microsoft and Intel's recent speech.Originally Posted by Effulgence

Well I kind of agree online downloading is the future. But not the Near Future. Honestly until the internet gets faster that just isnt going to happen, and even as the internet gets faster, files get bigger, its like a never ending cycle. So in the short term you need to pick a format until basic broadband connections can handle atleast a few megabytes per second. Even then though a 50GB file at 10MB per second would take an hour and a half and by the time basic broadband connections can transfer at that speed, files will be even larger than 50GB. I think its a little to early to drop support for basic disks and start supporting online distribution on bill's part.

I do agree, though, Microsoft choosing DVD first was the best move. But them thinking that they could use something like HD-DVD later on to not only combat SCEI but Sony as a whole, is pretty absurd, IMO.
Traditionally there is a far greater step-up in storage capacity between generations of consoles;
Cartridges (<>100meg) - CD ROM (700 meg) = x7
CD ROM (700 meg) - DVD ROM (4.5 gig) = x6+
DVD ROM (4.5 gig) - HD-DVD (currently 9 gig) = x2
If you look at generational leaps as a formula the 360 makes some very odd choices.

Well it appears that it is even less than that.Originally Posted by CARTIER90

I really expect to see multi disk 360 titles by the second generation of games, but in all reality with MS launching next month they really didnt have an option to incorporate any kind of advanced storage disk in their system. As far as that goes PC games are stilling selling millions of cd based games and in fact most stores only carry the cd formats (outside of gaming based stores).
I know this might not be the case this gen, but Square left Nintendo over storage issues (cartridge vs. cd).
First gen games, that are not traditionally storage heavy, like fighting games are already two discs on the 360 (DOA4 has 2 discs, 1 for sp, 1 for mp).
The reason PC games are sold on CD is that not everyone has a DVD drive. On the PC lots of discs is not a problem, as there is no disc swapping, because the game is stored on the hard drive. This is obviously a different scenario to consoles.
Very good point and perhaps I was somewhat misleading. I was attempting to refer to the formats lifespan (but yeah I could see how I didnt make that clear). Still, look at the GC, there hasnt been any problems with the RE series being shipped on multiple disks (at least that I know of) or any of the other multi disk titles.Originally Posted by sif

Regarding RE on the GC, that is just a few games on the GC that require more than one disc. The issue starts when the majority need 2-3 discs. Then people start to get annoyed. Yeah, the whole Square thing was a bit of a half-truth, I don't think they liked Nintendo's royalties system either.![]()
