people were spending insane amounts of money for the ps2 that time. if there is a shortage i better buy like 5 and make acouple grand.
There was a delay in the PS2 launch because there was a shortage in specific raw resources. That just slowed everything down and there was not much that could be done. This time, Sony's not going to have such an issue, like with the PS, PSX and PSP. Sony's production lines along with the joint fab with Toshiba (Oita) and IBM (Fishkill) will be enough to cater the hungry consumers. Blu-ray hardware will also have a constant supply, because of HD-DVD.
If Sony breaks up their launch schedule then I dont see any problems with supply, however, if they attempt a worldwide launch then I dont think there is any way that they keep up with demand (much like what MS is experiencing now).
It's actually in some ways a good thing if they under supply to an extent. They can get the point of demand across to media and fans by selling out, which could create a buzz in itself.
I agree. I think they'll just lauch in two territories at the most. If not simultaneously, then chronologically, but with a smaller gap this time.Originally Posted by woundingchaney
do u suppose it easier to keep up with demand with a summer launch, and mass produce for xmas binge spending, or do you think all fabshops available to sony will make excess holiday buying and release at same window moot? I know xbox is going for this extra hype, will sony need it, or will they need to break it up for blu ray and xdr (new memory) possible supply issues?
I would suppose its a lot easier to keep up with demand on a Q1/Q2 release schedule. Because even though there will be surely plenty of people that get one those first few weeks its nothing compared to the mad dash that happens during the winter holidays.
Honestly I dont think they'll break the schedule up for supply issues but just purely because thats the way they've always done it. It releases in Japan first, then America, then everywhere else, unless ive missed some crucial information I didnt think that release schedule ever had anything to do with supply problems.
I dont think there will be a PS3 shortage.
sony had plenty of PSP for launch.
but any ways i will have my PS3 paid off in full.
I think both Sony & Microsoft over hype the “shortage of consoles” at launch thing to get more buyers into the stores. I (friends, family, ECT...) have never had any problem getting a new console system during launch day (without a preorder-deposit). Has anyone here ever had any problems getting a new system at launch day a-la receiving a rain check? Hell…I ordered my PS2 from overseas during the Japanese launch date and received it the next day.
That is exactly what I was gonna say, I really think the shortage at the PS2's launch help alot. If you have people paying $3000 on E-bay for something and then you see it in a store for $300 that going to have an effect on people and it's nothing but good for Sony.Originally Posted by Vejita
It is a Sony tactic to create shortages to increase hype and demand. It worked for PS2 and PS1. The only thing is it is not working for the PSP.
who knows, sony's marketing is.......smart
but i just hope they don't screw Europe and most importantly Australia again I WANT PS3, SONY
Less invasions, more equations!
They shouldnt be a shortage at all though this time round, especially with M$ scheduled to be first on the bat..
Good point, sony is under strict competition this time.Originally Posted by KlawHammer
