Talking Rockstar Buys The Unreal Engine 3

    http://www.kotaku.com/gaming/nvidia/...ard-117036.php

Fast on his feet Kotaku reader Imran Moghul writes to tell me about his brother’s adventures at the Edinburgh International Conference Center which runs from August 10 through 14.

It sounds like they made some pretty amazing announcements at the Nvidia presentation.

According to Moghul, the Nvidia people announced that the new Unreal Tournament 2007 and Gears of War will both be using the Novodex physics engine (that’s Swiss) and not Havok.

The company also said that within the next year they will be releasing a special physics graphics card which will take over the physics calculations load from standard graphics cards. Both Unreal 07 and Gears of War will likely support this feature.

Finally, the company announced that Rockstar purchased the Unreal 3 Engine for a future title.

Good stuff Moghul, keep up the good work. Make sure to check back with us as more reports from Edinburgh begin to filter in from readers, industry folk and perhaps a Kotaku writer or two.

Take it with a grain of salt, but do you know what this could mean!
    Less invasions, more equations!

  2. this is good news the unreal engine 3 is a great engine.

I'm not surprised if the next GTA uses the unreal 3 engine since one of its most acclaimed features of the engine is its ability to stitch together and stream massive levels (essentially having several San Andreas size environments put together) with huge amounts of detail.

Just look at Frame City Killers; it uses the UE3 to produce its detailed GTA style world.

Wow. Imagine the possibilities for Grand Theft Auto.

  6. Now, now. Remember guys, they said for a future title, not necessarily GTA. Though the possibility is there, and just thinking about it gets me excited.

Is the UE3 really that flexible to go from Unreal games to a GTA game and provide the same level of detail and visuals? I don't know much about engines & development platforms (yet), but I'm curious about UE3's versatility. I guess if any engine was versatile enough, it would be this one though, since it's pretty much made for games OTHER than Unreal

The Unreal 3 engine has got nothing but praise since its debut (at least to my knowledge). Its being utilized in just about every genre you can think of (I dont know about rpgs however).

  9. This should make GTA look beautiful, the only question I have which has more to do with the Unreal 3 engine is this. Can anyone point out a game running on this engine that has human characters or close to having NON-PLASTIC looking skin? This is the only draw back or thing thats starting to urk me the most about the engine. Besides that it looks like a fantastic engine.......... I'm tired of plastic looking people..........

And another thing can someone please tell me how to use the smily faces I don't know how to save my life, please tell me no matter how stupid I feel after the fact

Im quite sure that just the artistic look the devs are looking for. I highly doubt that the Unreal 3 Engine was built around plastic faces.

Oh and I had a problem with smileys when I first joined here. Basically make sure the page has loaded completely before you try to use one.

  12. Thanks Domination. The only problem now is that I don't have those options in my advanced reply. I don't want to take this thread off subject but how do I turn those options on? Man this is frustrating.

NM I figured out what I had turned off, thanks!!!

Personally, I would LOVE to see a next-gen Manhunt using the UE3 on the PS3.

the blood would look super realalistic!
    Less invasions, more equations!

  15. gta was always more stylistic and action fanfare accented to draw acclaim. using unreal engine 3 takes nothing away from rockstar in my mind. it seems epic really predicted the market with unreal engine for game development firms!

  16. edit: duh, lol.

how about a + rep for posting such fantabloranalisticated news
    Less invasions, more equations!

  18. Eternal Saga uses the Unreal Engine Picture

  19. Thanks Raven, somewhere in the back of my head I think I remember it being said they are using the unreal engine 3. For a sec there I thought they were taking the "Toy Story type graphics" too literally. This makes me happy

I just want to point out that Rockstar did not "Purchase" the UE3 engine, they "licensed" the engine. Big difference
