Hi there.
I just wanted to start up a discussion about how you guys think the next generation consoles will fare in the MMORPG market?
Personally, MMORPGs are my favourite genre of game simply because of the persistence. The game has a very, very long play time if it is interesting.
I have given up on MMORPGs for the PC though, because I am sick of jumping through all the hoops associated with system requirements and upgrading. I have went through two video cards in the last year and just recently cancelled an order for a card that was going to cost me $500.00 CAD, when I realized: This is ridiculous. For probably the cost of HALF a PS3, I would be getting a video card that would become obsolete again in no time.
I want the next generation consoles--particularly PS3--to take a seriously active role in the MMORPG market and get all of the high end games.
I realize that Sony may opt for upgradeable system specs, but at least with them we have the security of knowing that games are DESIGNED specifically for that hardware. The problem with PC games is that so many different developers are involved, that software/hardware conflicts show up left and right. At least with a console, you know that the parts you decide to buy will work as well as anyone else's, and they will probably be available at a reasonable price.
Lastly, you don't have to be a hardcore gamer/computer user to enjoy a console right now and I don't think that Sony will change that any time in the next decade. You really have to know your stuff with PC games, otherwise, if they have bugs and stuff there's really no way around it.
What do you all think?
Well, look at it this way... You'll at LEAST get Everquest 2 for the PS3... which is a VERY graphically superior MMORPG game... Considering that Sony ported Everquest for the PS2, why don't they do the same for the PS3 and hopefully get more subscribers? 'Cause I most definately agree, I pretty much gave up on all PC gaming because of the constant upgrading and drain in my financial status, hell, I can barely afford to upgrade to a new Graphic card now.
I hate having the best card in the block, then 6 month later, some other kid smacks you in the face with a better red bike (Heh, I "twisted" the saying a bit).
That's another good point, Console games will most likely not have any "major" bug to cause it incompatible.Lastly, you don't have to be a hardcore gamer/computer user to enjoy a console right now and I don't think that Sony will change that any time in the next decade. How well it'll fare... well, that really depends on the console's limitation, I mean you can't expect something like Guild Wars to run on any current gen consoles, so basically, the better the console, the more likely bigger and better MMORPG will have a chance to be made for it.I just wanted to start up a discussion about how you guys think the next generation consoles will fare in the MMORPG market?
Well, that's my 2 cents.
Side note: I'm not a very avid MMORPG player... so personally, I couldn't care less if there was none .

FFXI did a great job, but i still feel it had things, missing but hey its Sqaures first attempt and its not bad for a first try, i have played a few pc based games which dont need that good a spec and run fine the most memorable beeing
the legend of mir anyone else played it,graphics were not that great but it keep me entertained for months with a great community and plenty to do, i think though Community have the biggest impact on a game and thats one reason i stopped playing LOM because there was account hacking and cheating etc and it just ruined a perfectly good game, the same happend in Ragnorok online and that was just in Beta.
If Sony want to do well there going to need to really work with the developers to ensure the best game possible with great security and hope the community evolves the way it should do.
I don't think the PS3 will have many, considering it's PC dominated genre. There are so many right now and on the horizon that I only think the PS3 will have ones that have very large names such as FF. Plus the whole community thing is a bit smoother on the computer considering the internet, forums, and all those kind of things.
i hope they have some because i like mmorpg's.
i just hope they have some better than the mmorpg's that are here today(i haven't played very many so please don't criticize).
i love mmorpg's so much that i actually went out and spent 40USD on a broadband adaptor for my GC then i spent 53.49USD for PSO ep1&2 for the GC and 25USD for an ethernet chord.(plus the monthly fee for that crappy game)(and do you believe that that is the only online game for the GC. i feel so cheated  )

I personally hate, and am afraid of MMORPG's. Although I think a game like this is exactly what the ps3 was meant to do. The more people that play, the more massive the world becomes. Cells work like a synergy, 2 added together = more than 2 of them individually. But of course, I think MMO's will be the doom of us all. :/
Why would it be the doom of us all?Originally Posted by Jrix
