ATRAC3 or MP3?

i think sony should make a program to where you can make ATRAC's but save to a file and not burn them. if they already got that them i must have missed out on it but it would be alot better to have ATRAC3 than MP3 dont you think? :?

I got a net MD player and 2 mp3 players and the sound quality of the md is better at lower bitrate. 132kbps Atrac3 sounds like 192kbps Mp3. I was even majorly suprised how 66kbps Atrac3 sounded, it compares to 96kbps or even 112kbps mp3. Seriously, 64kbps mp3 sounds horrible.

Mp3's are still easier to use, that is if you download them , but for those who have to rip straight off the cd there is no difference lol. After I started using a net MP player, I question why anyone still uses mp3 players (expect those that come with microdrives).

you might have gotten confused becasue mp4 is a big file and it could be as big as a small video file

MD's good! Because it depends on time how many tracks you can put on an MD even at 320kbs you can still fit as many tracks as you can with 128k or 192k tracks and with LP4 you can fit 5 and a half hours on one MD and it doesn't sound any different to SP.

MP4 is short for MPEG4, which is the continuation of MPEG2 (there was never a MPEG3, to avoid confusion with Mp3).

mp3 is just part of MPEG-1 audio layer 3.

MPEG4 is video, not audio, and MP4 is short for MPEG4.

Why is the technology useless to me if I get 5 and a half hours on 1 disc in LP4 instead of 1 hour and 20 minutes and can't tell the difference between LP4 and SP? please explain!?

Because it sounds like you can't tell the difference between CD quality and audio compressed to 48kbs, you may-as-well buy a 128mb mp3 player from ebay for $80. That'll give you more than five and a half hours of music.

I wouldn't even clean my toilet with fosters. Hasn't mp4 got a lower compression than mp3? There is definatley a reduction in sound quality between sp lp4 but "it sounds so shit" isn't really and appropriate description. In otherwords there is a difference but not much of one.

LOL. yeah like some dude telling me DVD-Audio sounds a lot better than CD because CD has 192 KB quality while DVD-A has 10,000KB...

His figures were probably accurate but considering the ear can only hear so much and tell so much of a difference its pretty pointless talking about extremely high sound quality and hailing it as god.

MP4 is a file extension for MPEG4 files that can contain just audio, just video, or both. You can also get a MPEG4 audio or video file with the .mpg extension.

This link mentions that they ar trying to standardize the new audio format by calling all the sound files .m4a

Granted, whoever has been thinking up new file extensions probably wasn't using his noggin on how to not confuse the public. It would have been easy to call MP4 something different.
