    Entertainment system or games system?

Judging on the direction Sony and Microsoft are taking towards digital media systems and media distribution, how do you think the next generation systems will fit into this? Would you expect PlayStation 3 and Xbox Next to be full blown entertainment systems of simple games consoles?

Sony may be planning to release two versions of PlayStation 3, a games system (fairly cheap, plays all existing PS, PS2 and PS3 games) and an entertainment system (does all of the above plus video/music recording, broadband network extras (video/music downloads, broadband TV, web access).

  2. That's a good question.

    lots of variables.

Lately Microsoft has made addresses stateing they want to take over the living room. I don't think it's gonna be the xbox2.

Sony usually likes to merge technologies as they have done in the past. I think there will be a console to start with, and Fully featured sony entertainment systems featuring the ps3 chipset later. They've done something like this before i think.

  3. itle be 2 expensive to make the ps3 a full blown entertainment system like the PSX. they will do the same with the ps3 as with the ps2 and PSX, they will make the ps3 a games console (though of course it will have some cool multimedia features) and later they will make a sort of PSX2

Possibly there will be a PlayStation 3 games console (with DVD and CD playback), then Sony will go on and use the Cell for what it was intended for, the 21st century entertainment system which will either make or break Sony. Something which does it all and carries the "PlayStation 3" logo (if only to indicate the format used for games) similar to a PSX.

I think we'll call it Sony Entertainment System for now.

    Same goes for Microsoft

I think PS3 will launch with basic features like DVD playback, backwords compatibility, and later will launch a version with more features like what they did with the PSX. They also could release a software package that you could download to the harddive if it has one.

  6. I think that the ps3 will be3 a basic entertainment system.

It's pretty obvious that the avatar is taking the piss out of GamezVille, anyway, back to the subject.

It seems to have slowly progressed in the direction of an entertainment system. The PS1 played CD's, the PS2 plays CD's and DVD's, the PSX plays CD's, DVD's and various other things. So I think by the time we get to the PS3, they'll be a lot more features that would make it more of an entertainment system that a gaming console. Of course, they will be concentrating mostly on the games, but I guess that they want to target the people who want an all-in-one system for their living room/bedroom/whatever.

  11. maybe the PS3 would have a radio? i mean Cds DVDs have been taken why not a radio? i dunno its just something stupid i thought of

Yes it is pretty stupid. Though something like a digital TV tuner would work better as it would receive digital TV and radio stations and would complement the other digital features, it may even work with them such as recording to the hard disc.

  13. I think game console has been entertainment system for quite a while already..

    NES - Nintendo Entertainment System.

Well Nintendo has always made just basic games consoles so it couldn't be further from the truth.

If Sony added all that extra stuff to PS3 and it ended up costing $400 I would be mad. Its not neccesary to have a t.v. tuner, or whatever else especially when its already hard to keep the price of the console low. I'm sure it won't come with all those extras.

Maybe there will be two versions, one similar to PS2 and another more like PSX.

  17. I think PS3 will have same kind of features that PS2 offered, plus support for High Definition movie format(considering PS3 might have Blue-Ray Drive), and built in internet connectivity(obviously).
Feature-rich version of PS3 will likely be PSX2...I think

Thats exactly what I was thinking. They could have a basic PS3 model that had everything you needed to game with and another version that had extra features and cost more. PS3-EX (extra).

  19. The PS3 should be a games console and a games console only - ok make it play a few other formats like DVD and CD-i but leave it as it is otherwise.

Yeah thats how I felt when they started saying that the PS3 was going to have multiple features. It seemed like Sony wanted to take the focus away from the game console and wanted an all in one box that included a game console instead of a game console with extra features. Remember when they were saying the PS3 might be a software program that you would download to a product with a cell processer. I don't know about you but I would rather have a physical console. Thats why I hope Sony releases a seperate box with extra features.
