Thread: Revolution NOT to Compete With Sony and Microsoft?

  1. Revolution NOT to Compete With Sony and Microsoft?

Heres part of an article from IGN, I'll post the link to the full article at the end.

Currently very little is known about the Revolution except that it may not use a conventional controller and may be able to connect to a PC monitor as well as the traditional TV screen.

"The concept behind our new console, tentatively named 'Revolution,' is the same as the DS. We want it to broaden the [video gaming] audience range, and we don't want it to be something that people will see as too irrelevant to them, too difficult to use, or as something that wastes space. We'll announce specific details at the E3 ... It will most likely come out between this year [and] next year, which is considered to be the transition period for home consoles," Iwata said.

Iwata said the DS and PSP aren't directly competing, because Nintendo is aiming for nongamers and retired gamers with its handheld, while Sony is targeting the traditional gaming audience. He added that his company will also attempt to avoid competing in the next-gen console market.

"Similar to the relationship that the DS has with the PSP, we won't fight over the same share of the pie with another company. We have no intention of fighting over shares of the market in a way that will shrink it. For us, success will depend on whether we can call back people that have stopped playing games, and whether we can also bring in a new base of customers. That way, our share [of the market] will increase since the market will grow bigger," Iwata said.

"Its [The DS] sales are very good when compared to the launch of other game machines we've sold in the past. We feel that the DS has gained a wide range of audience. Aside from video game fans, people that haven't played games in a long time, or never played games before, have been picking up the DS," Iwata said. "According to research, the sales of game hardware for one month, starting in late November, increased by 75 percent compared to the past year, and game software sales also rose by about 10 percent. I believe that the DS is hindering people from losing interest in video games." [Iwata said.]

When asked by the Kyoto Journal what he thought of the PSP, Iwata stated relatively bluntly that Sony is going in a direction that Nintendo doesn't believe in, though he softened that by saying he welcomes Sony's entrance into the market--since it should expand the total gaming audience.

"In the past, the video game industry grew on high-quality graphics and data volume," Iwata said. "We decided to move into a different direction, since we believe that those days have ended. But by watching the PSP, we see that there are also people that have different thoughts from us. But it's up to the consumers to make the judgment, and it'll also be good if we can expand the market size by bringing out our best points."

Don't read too deep into that. His point is that instead of fighting over the same gamers of this generation, he wants to grab new gamers and gamers that no longer play video games PLUS the current gamers.

Why do they always say this? The DS IS competing with PSP- no matter what they say. And if this thing plays games, it will compete with PS3 and Xenon.

It's the usual Nintendo jargon. We're not competing with you, but we are taking away your market share. Oops?

The more i read into the stuff Iwata says about the gaming industry the more i believe a monkey can dominate Jupiter.

I mean, c'mon Iwata, you ARE competing no matter what and if you dont put your gaurd up Sony and Microsoft ARE going to rip you apart.

They way Nintendo should be thinking. They are not cutting out their current customers or mature gamers they just want to appeal to everybody like they always said except now they are making hardware and software that appeals to everybody as well.

If you think about it Nintendo has not been competing with the other companies. The other companies have been in the red for years. Just recently Microsoft Xbox finally started making a profit. Nintendo has been making a profit for years on its GC, GBA, SP lines despite the lack of hardcore excellent software.

Appealing to everyone might backfire. The Gamecube having games that younger gamers can enjoy made some people think that only younger gamers can enjoy them. If they want their system to be enjoyable by casuals, some people might get the impression that casual gamers are the only people who can enjoy it.

I really hope that doesn't happen.

It also comes down to advertising if people always see Mario Sunshine, Gumby, or Animal crossing commercials and nothing concerning mature or cool titles can sway people as well.

But you have to remember that most of these quotes are either translated or done in horrible engrish by Iwata.

I think he DS advertising model will be applied to the Revolution ane that will be what Nintendo uses to garner that wide range of users without alienating any of them.

    Lol, Gumby.

  12. Who cares who they are or aren't competing with? In the end, Nintendo will still pump out quality titles. If some people find these games too childish to play, they're the ones missing out.
Take Pikmin2 for example. I wouldn't have even thought of playing this game until my sister got it for her birthday last week, and now I'm hooked. There's so much depth and strategy involved in such a simple micromanagement game.

I stole the original Pikmin from my sister when she rented it at blockbuster (we returned it and she only had about 2 days into it, while I had beaten it.)

  15. Hopefully Nintendo know what they are doing....

I think they are, instead of giving us better graphics like Microsoft and Sony who are offering us nothing new, Nintendo are giving us innovative gameplay.

  17. I hope the Revolution launches with a Gumby title.

Why does Nintedo keep insisting that 'people aren't intrested in games anymore'? That simply is not true.

  20. Contrary to what was said almost all the black people i know play video games, me included. A lot of them just buy playstation 2 instead of gamecube.
