  1. 46 PSP titles announced, Kutaragi rags on DS

*sigh*, why cant the guys over at SCE just keep their fat mouths shut? Here's the story taken from Gamespot.

TOKYO--In a press conference today, Sony Computer Entertainment revealed some new details on the PlayStation Portable, which is slated for release this winter. SCE revealed 46 new titles that are currently in development for the PSP, which brings the total number of games in development to 105. There are 60 companies currently developing games, while 100 have signed on as third-party publishers and are currently planning titles.

Some notable new games that were announced today come from major third-party publishers: Atlus is developing a Persona RPG, SNK is developing a 3D fighting game based on the King of Fighters series, Namco is making a Taiko no Tatsujin drum/music game, and From Software is making a Tenchu title.

Rez and Space Channel 5 creator Tetsuya Mizuguchi's new game, developed by his new independent studio Q Entertainment, was also shown. Called Lumines, the title is described as a "sound and light action puzzle game," and it will be published by Bandai. Visitors to the Tokyo Game Show will get the first chance to check out Lumines and 21 other titles that will be playable at SCE's booth.

No mention of specific movie titles were announced for release on the PSP's proprietary UMD media, although SCE president Ken Kutaragi said that plans to do so are in the final stages. When asked if the PSP will be able to record data on the UMD, Kutaragi confirmed that Sony doesn't have any plans to allow users to do so, at least in the early years after the machine's release.

"We're seeing the UMD as a medium for software distribution, so it should be good enough to just release it [without recording capabilities]," Kutaragi said to the press assembled at the conference. "But if the market starts to get stabilized and things are going well, there might be [game] companies that want to take advantage of UMD recording capabilities in their games. If that happens, we'll have to discuss with the companies about what kind of recording format to use, whether to add on stronger copy protection, or to even to make it into an international standard."

A new feature announced for the PSP during the conference is that the handheld will adopt the Cross Media Bar (XMB) interface for its system menu. The XMB originated in Sony's PSX hardware, and is now making its way to the company's other home electronic products.

Surprisingly, SCE did not use the conference to announce the price of the hardware. Sony won't be announcing it at the Tokyo Game Show, either--the official rationale is that the company will be using the reactions of the visitors to its PSP booth as one of the yardsticks by which it will determine the handheld's price. The handheld's release date hasn't been fixed, either, although it's slated for release sometime this winter. "We won't announce the price of the PSP today," Kutaragi said. "We hope to announce the price and release date of the PSP after we hear the voices of our users, distributors, and developers at the Tokyo Game Show."

When asked whether the PSP will be priced higher than the Nintendo DS--which Nintendo today announced would sell for 15,000 yen ($149)--Kutaragi declined to comment, but stressed that SCE's handheld will still sell well if it's more expensive than the DS, since the systems are positioned differently and won't be competing directly in price. Kutaragi said that he sees the DS as a new GBA model, while on the other hand he sees the PSP as a totally new handheld with next-generation specs. "When the [original] PlayStation came out, it cost 39,800 yen," he said. "At that time, Nintendo's [Super Famicom] was around 12,000 yen, but they both sold pretty well." Kutaragi also noted that the PlayStation's launch price of 39,800 yen was in no way indicative of the PSP's price.

Kutaragi revealed that the PSP hardware is already finished and ready to launch, and that software availability is the main factor that will determine the release date. "It wouldn't be good if there were a stack of games released at [the PSP's] launch, and then a long period afterward without game releases," Kutaragi said. "So we need to look ahead. We want to make sure that we have a steady release [schedule] before announcing the launch date." When asked if the PSP will be released within the year, Kutaragi said boldly, "I want to get it out. We're preparing for it."

Sony's just pissed that they announce the price literally minutes before the Sony conference, it screwed sony up...The big hype monster is trying to get ground back, or just acting gay.

Oh my, Sony is now tongue tied. Price, battery life and launch date are being kept secret because Nintendo just bombed on them.

105 titles in development for PSP
120 titles in development for DS

    ^^Ouch.

  6. And he thinks that DS is merely an advancement of the Game Boy Apparently, he must be blind, considering the DS has features out the wazoo, more than his very own PSP at that. Only thing the PSP has on the DS are the graphics. I seriosuly think Sony is making a big mistake with the PSP. The handheld front is single handedly dominated by Nintendo, and its going to be an uphill battle for Sony.

And like Viper said, Nintendo just OWNED Sony with that teleconference the other day. Battery life, release date, price, not to mention 2 pack-ins with their system.

The article says that is a list of games being shown at TGS, it does not say that is the total number of PSP games in development.

Sony is being smart/competitive by not announcing a price or date yet. It seems clear that PSP is coming out in 2005, there is no reason they should show their hand months earlier to let Nintendo prepare.

Edited my post but it still hurts considering Sony is in bed with more 3rd parties.

  10. It says "bringing the total number of games in development to 105"

Upon reading how the DS is just "another Gameboy," well, that makes the PSP just "another Zodiac."

On another note, if the PSP were to have UMD recording capabilities, you'd better have it plugged into a wall.

I would like to thank Reggie for severly screwing up Sony's speach. He is my idol now.

  12. #12
Reggie could make his own 8 bit handheld and still beat the PSP

Next gen specs? Why does there need to be a next gen so soon. Can't we just sit and enjoy this one? Grr damn competition is driving the game industry forward too quickly. I mean it'd not bad for technology but it sure as hell is getting pricey.

    [22:55] XboxEvolved360: I think I have a better chance of doing it
[22:55] XboxEvolved360: if you make realistic goals then you are just another person
[22:55] XboxEvolved360: if you make crazy goals
[22:55] XboxEvolved360: and you dont make them
    [22:55] XboxEvolved360: oh well

  15. Reggie sucks. I think DS will spank the PSP, especially if it comes bundled with MP: Hunters like I've been hearing.

It's Called First Hunt. It's a demo of the full game that has a 4 player wireless play. It also has Pictochat in hardware.

  17. I would prefer the DS over the PSP any day of the week, but to say Sony is stupid for bringing the PSP out is simply stupid, the PSP will be huge, Nintendo could offer DS for $20 and still PSP would succeed, I don't know if they're ever conquer Nintendo in the handheld market, but they sure as hell will not fail.

  18. The PSP is running out of time. That interview proved it. He has no confidence in the system. He had to use that gimmicky comparison? Come on... Nintendo has had a monopoly on the gaming industry for 15 years. They dictate policy.
"A-I-D-A. Attention, Interest, Decision, Action. Attention - Do I have your attention? Interest - Are you interested? I know you are, because it's fuck or walk. You close or you hit the bricks. Decision - Have you made your decision for Christ? And Action." (Alec Baldwin in Glengarry Glen Ross)

I personally think, Sony isn't thinking hard on their new system, I mean, they havent said any price, battery life, or launch date, and they think PSP will be succesful, just because of theestablished job, Playstation has done in the past, and I think thats where their problem is, their too sure of themselves. Besides, they will launch PSP right after holiday seasons, or in early 2005, which is a bad move. Because the majority of people, buy gifts before christmas, this means, a lot of DSs are gonna be sold first.

DS will have the advantage, not only because it will be released first, but also because it will sport a series of gizmos, that will allow many people to enjoy the expirience well beyond just simple tapping a button, and wathcing the character move, which PSP is only doing. I'am very positive that gamers will love DS its a new way to play games, even if its graphics arent all that well, but who cares? people nowadays are just looking for good special effects and graphics on games, that they forget what gaming is all about, fun.

I dont know if the actual game will be good, but MTS: Ac!d looks like crap, not because of the graphics or anything, but the whole idea of using cards for movement and attack seems a little too common with card games these days, and it doesnt look too attractive either. Iam very happy that DS will come with Pictochat available, it will work good for Nintendo and the DS. All I can say is this, Nintendo, you just sold another DS. PSP and Sony, kiss my ass
Dont cry over my mortal body, but rejoice in the eternity of my soul and my dreams who will keep on living for as long as you shall remember me.

Thats what lead to nintendo's fall with the N64. Now they know better. They aren't letting their reputaion do the talking. It's all out war.
