I second what others above me have said about exposition and lack of gameplay in later chapters. I will also add one other disappointment i had with the game and that was the warzone element . Two of these levels were great where in one you could help the rebels to destroy an enemy tank. The second was disabling the powerplant which again helped the rebel cause. Those were very cool so why did they feel the need to add infinitely respawning enemies + choppers in the other warzone levels? It took me completely out of the game at times. Also Kojima has to take the next step by integrating the action in his cutscenes and on rails sections into playable set pieces like Naughty Dog have done so well with Uncharted.

I'd like trophies to be placed in MGS4... give me yet another reason to replay

I left MGS4 filling like every question I had was answered, and the answers made perfect sense within the exposition laid out from the previous titles.

Personally, I thought MGS3 was fun, but it had a load of issues in my opinion. The camouflage and food systems were neat gimmicks for the first few hours, but became very cumbersome as the game progressed. The constant going in and out of menus to up my camouflage index or eat food really broke the experience for me. Also, the biggest red flag for me in that game was the story. It answered very few if any questions raised from MGS2 and only opened up a plethora of plot holes that forced Kojima to fill in MGS4. The relationship between The Boss and Naked snake was beautifully imagined throughout the title, but literally the only thing that made the game make sense in comparison to what was released prior to MGS3 was the closing credit time line which explained that the philosophers later became known as the patriots (though MGS4 later showed that that wasn't the whole story).

I understand that MGS3 really helped to give a clearer purpose to the motivations of Big Boss, but the series would have been served better (at least narrative wise) if the game came after what was to be MGS4. I feel like the narrative would have been streamlined overall or at least could have allowed MGS3 to be a bigger and more narratively cohesive game instead of an unnecessary origin story. I'm not saying MGS3 wasn't a fantastic game or anything, but it ended up creating more plot holes that needed to be filled and forced MGS4 to be a slave to a story that became much more grand than it needed to be (specifically since Kojima didn't personally want to commit to the number of game it would take to properly do justice to his increasingly involved narrative).

I also didn't like that MGS3 so unexpectedly punished players in such a completely unforeseen, obtuse, and cheap way with The Sorrow's boss fight. It's definitely a genius idea, but created upwards of an hour or more annoyance for players who enjoyed killing throughout the game even if they played stealthily. It was a completely artificial game mechanic with a character who served very little point unless you really read into what was going on (I personally enjoyed his character though). MGS4 opened up more gameplay possibilities without punishing or pushing a run-n-gun style over stealth, or vice versa. I enjoyed that I could play through MGS4 with completely opposing gameplay styles and both were completely feasible throughout (well mostly anyways). MGS4 also had some of the most insane set pieces of the series (the metal gear fight and Snake vs Ocelot were awesome).

Wow that was a long post, and I have alot more to say but I guess it'll be good to stop lol. I don't want to start an argument since my points are highly opinionated, but I just wanted to pose my thoughts since others have haha.

Edit: I do have to say that MGS4 as a whole really did a great job of showing the fruition of how Big Boss' ideals would have disastrous unforeseen consequences. The patriot system fulfilled his ideals better than he could have, but also made the world a stage of madness full of perpetual war with no cause, creating monsters born with no purpose (the 4 beauties) fueled by the insanity of their creation only to perpetuate the creation of more monsters. MGS4 offered some awesome commentaries on war and the state of its own universe.
I get what you're saying about MGS4 sort of being a slave to MGS3 in the context of the revelations, but it wouldn't have worked if he flip-flopped. Let's assume for a second he doesn't know what happens after MGS2. If he drops the curtain on MGS4 immediately after the existential MGS2 there would have been mass rioting. MGS3 served the purpose of bringing everything back to square one in a thematic sense and setting the stage. MGS1 and MGS2 show us the glimpse of the totalitarian regime that has been instituted and MGS3 explains how that happened and MGS4 brings us full circle again. Not the ideal way to tell a story, I grant you that, but Kojima made it work. I don't know how, but he did.

Also, 3 was necessary to flesh out Big Boss, and his relationship to the Boss, which played such an integral role in 4. Hell, even with 3, Eva had to drag through a 30 minute long review in that church.

  5. More like a confession. It's still great to listen to.

Agreed, although her tape at the end of the 3 tops it by a wide margin.

  7. Her confession in Peace Walker is also a good thirty-five minutes or so, but that's optional. It's valuable material, but there are seven tapes to listen to.

Haven't played Peace Walker yet. Gotta wait until I get the HD collection. No way in hell I was playing another PSP game after Portable Ops.

  9. The controls were a bit wonky, yes, but once you got used to them it was fine. I do wish they'd thrown in Portable Ops in with the mix because of how it ties in with the rest of the story.

I definitely agree with everything you said. Kojima so made it work and he did wonderfully. Thanks for the input.

I still need to play peace walker myself. I'd really like to see what it adds to the MGS universe.

  11. It is an engaging title, for sure. Definitely the best PSP game on the market and the third-best Metal Gear game in the franchise, for my money. Playing it on a PS3 is a treat because the controls could be challenging for the PSP at times. Story-wise the game does a very credible job showing Big Boss's arc into what he would eventually become and the story itself, which is steeped in Cold War politics, is very good. The RPG elements might seem strange, but they work and are strangely addicting. The one sticking point I've noticed is that some people don't like the mission layout. It's probably more of a PSP thing because of memory issues, but there is tremendous depth with over one hundred missions (about thirty-five are the main story missions). Buying the HD collection just for Peace Walker alone is a smoking deal.

Metal Gear "Next"- KP opening new CA studio

Ken Imaizumi has confirmed that they will be opening up a new studio in California

What interesting about it is that they seem to be building a full studio based off what they are looking for, Could this be the development team that will do the "Next" MG and not KP?

KP is hiring for next MGS game at GDC. Can't say I'm excited about another MGS
Kojima Productions will be returning to the GDC Career Pavilion (March 6th - 9th) to search for skillful engineers, artists, and game creators including:

Project engineers for the latest Metal Gear Solid targeted for high-end consoles and PC

Engineers to help develop next-gen game engine technology for use with the "FOX Engine.

    Kojima Productions Brand Manager

If you are interested in becoming part of our team, please visit the Konami Group booth, #1914, in the Career Pavilion. We look forward to meeting lots of enthusiastic and talented candidates.

I wish I was done with school instead of just starting. I'd be all over this. I'd be stabbing motherfuckers and climbing their bodies to the top!

  15. I would love to see a documentation for a level you designed. Like one section in a MGS game for example. Sketches, with HUD that labels what's going on, gameplay mechanics in play etc etc. Hell do it for practice as if you were applying to this job and show it to us or blog it here or something.

As for this....I am excited and nervous. One hand I feel they are refocusing 100% on MGS with a brand new big studio and it's going to be cutting edge epicness we all expect. On other hand, I feel it's distancing itself from the root so much they are going to run the franchise into the ground.

Ah the video game section, where threads go to die.

  18. #58
True, though that's the fault of us forum users, not the threads themselves :P, it's our job to keep all sections alive appropriately by posting topics where they should be, not just in the Playstation 3 section just cause its a last ditch attempt at getting subjects noticed and people to talk.

    ...urgh It's late.

Doesn't look like samples...rather an application to join Kojima Productions.
