According to Wikipedia, it wasn't even "the first" (i.e. first production unit), but A first... i.e. just a model 1 Apple. It's insane, because you can build those things yourself for less than 200USD.

You missed the point completely. Your custom built one won't have the value of being a rare one of the first Apple computers (that still work).

No-one thought "I need an old computer" and paid $374K for this.

"one of six of the less than 50 surviving"

Why does that not make sense to me. Why is that not just 1 of the 50 surviving.

Edit: nevermind, that's 50 surviving, of which 6 still work, one being this one.

I miss the point? I am not spending a third million on something utterly useless, which I could have for sub-200USD. Now, I could see a high price if it REALLY was THE first Apple 1 ever made... because it's the fucking first. But it's just one out of several. That's a pea in a pod... Who pays that much for such a thing?

It's not like it's really a conversation piece either. Other than "why would you waste that much money on something less powerful than my telephone". I don't see the point in 'collecting' it either, unless it was for a technology museum or something, but even then that stuff is usually donated or they will have the old case etc but emulate the display or something.
