    ps3 problem

when my friend puts his PS3 on the led turns green for a moment but then it turn yellow for a split second then goes red and blinks. he hears a system bleep three times and then it turns off. it's an older model with BC (partially BC/60GB) it doesn't sound like YLOD

    any ideas?

  4. Yellow light, YLOD. Let it cool down for a bit then try again just in case but Yellow I think means hardware failure.

it doest stay on yellow though. i tried it myself and it goes: green, yellow, green (quickly) and then blinks red continuously

This resets the tv/hdmi settings and some other things (like wallpaper and theme).

Thats how mine died. Gave it in to be fixed only for it to happen again six months later. Tell him to not bother wasting time and money and just to buy a slim.

thanks guys. i'm going to try the fan test because other forums have suggested that 'sometimes' it fixes it...

Fan test doesn't work on rev.1 PS3s (i.e. 20GB and 60GB). Only the 40GB and newer have it implemented... Not sure if that ever changed, though.

yep, it didn't work at all (the fan test i mean)

i think it's dead without a doubt. i did tell him before he bought his BC PS3 from Ebay that the risk is high that it could die on him.

Yeah, that's asking for trouble, for all you knew it had already failed once and someone fixed it to sell it, and that doesn't usually last long.

I sold my 60GB on Ebay when the BDROM started acting up on MGS4 (only dual layer game at the time) and bought the Slim. Will probably sell my Slim soon and buy a white one^

open it up, take out the mobo, lay it flat, and apply heat to the processor with a heat gun (or maybe blowdryer)
find my thread about this. i fixed my YLOD like 5 times like this. first fix cured it for a couple/few months, then each subsequent time cured it for less until it finally died for good

i'll give him the heads up but i'm not sure he'd want to do that himself and i wouldn't want to take that risk on his behalf

I disassembed my Slim today (was easy as pie)... NO dust build up, even after nearly three years. And I really mean NONE. And me (being a smoker and all and not tidy as fuck) being concerned^^ Might apply new thermal paste tomorrow, or something, though.

Taking apart any ps3 is easy the best thing to do on your first time is to write notes and take photos as you are going along

and the slim is so cheap and horribly put together compared to the fattys
