So been looking at getting a nice unlocked smart phone, any thoughts and experiences with above OS are welcome! I like Iphones, but they are simply too expensive to get new and unlocked. Besides the steep entry point, there seemed to be little changes to the Iphone over the years, besides some upgrades in the actual hardware, sirah is the big "thing"Not a fan of really having a cluttered phone as well, I deleted over half of the instock apps on my old Android My touch and will likely do the same for the Xperia I just got my wife.
So she has 2.3 Gingerbread and will likely upgrade to 4.0 Ice cream sandwich soon. I figured, I would go with a different OS, to compared and contrast so I've been researching the latest IOS and Mango from windows, and I have to admit, Windows seems to really be hitting on some keep elements. Ease of use, stability, and usability are really want I want, at a decent price to boot. So that's where I'm leaning. Anyone have phone experiences they wish to share?
Who's has the best Mobile OS out there now? Ice-cream sandwich, Mango, or IOS?

Ever since I upgraded to Android 4.0.4 (funny number), I don't want to go back. It's so sleek, it's hypnotizing. But I also do lots of crap with my phone and cherish the freedom, even an unrooted Android device gives you... rooting, however, also allows you to do really nice stuff. 4.0 is... well, it's a complete overhaul and you can't compare it to <=2.3. It's better in EVERY regard. I would, however, try to get ahold of the current Nexus device, as the others always have some OEM stuff (i.e. different launcher etc. which makes "4.0" quite irrelevant) included on it... unless you want to go "Cyanogenmod" as I did... was really worth it, as Samsung doesn't update their devices, although they are quite capable (their reasoning was, that their branding can't be ported because of limited memory, and the joke is, that most people that actively use their devices HATE touchwiz with a passion).
I'd stay away from WM7 for the moment, as the "trend" is going away from it. Not that it's bad or anything (I can't really comment on that), but with this move, the interesting stuff (i.e. cool apps etc) won't make it there, either. And it's just as shut off from the outside as ios, if you don't open it up by yourself.
And my opinion on Apple should be known on this forum^^ I'd stay away from it for several reasons, the biggest one is that I am an open source guy, and Apple actively opposes this with their ios devices.

Well, I'm not a big App guy... I mainly look for tech in phones almost equally as the OS. Not that I don't like cool apps, but I really really hate a bogged down system with hundreds of apps, so I usually only keep a few of my favorites. It's just like the Linux distro I use. I always download and install Ubuntu, even though it's one of the more bloated Linux setups you can find, and then "Trim the fat" so to speak after installation. I like minimalistic approaches, while having the flexibility to do what I want. So, even though the community is not really popular with Windows, I've heard nothing but stability from users posting impressions online, and stability is a huge plus for me because my old My Touch (android based) after a while, became quite buggy.
Also, how is the ecosystem for Android that different than IOS when it comes to apps? Isn't it the same process of someone buying or borrowing an SDK and creating something? But yeah, that's my main gripe with Apple in general, with Windows, even though it's closed, if I wanted the computer that's I was pressured into getting. With a Mac, not only was it really expensive (with no mid-range alternative) but Itunes didn't function with anything but Ipad/Ipods. Apple wanted you to buy into there entire ecosystem, and I just wasn't a fan after messing around with Linux and seeing how free most things really are. Besides the ecosystem though, would you agree that IOS is a more stable OS than Android? That's the main reason I'm interesting in a Windows phone. I like the idea of keeping a basic smartphone with a few apps, that runs smoothly with a good 2-3 years.

I have the HTC Inspire/Desire. I have been considering rooting it and installing ICS, but its kind of a work phone........not sure if I want to void teh warranty.
I am not a big app guy myself... I have like 20-30 apps installed, but I use all of them regularly... some less (GPS tracking, when biking) some more (XBMC Remote). The rest is the standard stuff that comes with GAPPS (i.e. Gmail, Youtube, Maps etc).
Programming stuff for Android is as easy as download the SDK and Eclipse, both of which you can download for free without any registration (you will need the Java SDK/Runtime for Eclipse, though). Only releasing anything on the store (which isn't mandatory, either) will cost you a one time 30USD fee. Thing is... I can program and release my stuff completely without Google (well, not completely, as I'd not be able to write anything without the SDK, but the licensing is "royalty free" and all software still belongs to you). You will limit your audience if you don't go to the Android Market, but the option is there. And most (I haven't heard of any device that doesn't allow it) devices will happily accept any apk thrown at them, provided "installation of foreign packages" is enabled.
Thing is... with Apple, you enter an NDA (not sure if that's still the case, it was when it was new), which forbids you to release your source code when using their SDK (which is mandatory if you want to do ios stuff). It's practically impossible to port ANY (gpl-ish) open source software to ios, legally. You WILL have problems releasing stuff on the Itunes store, because Apple seems to be very pissy about their agreements...
As a software developer, I cannot fathom anyone wanting to join the "dark side" (although most apple devices are white and most androids are black^ go figure). But I've also tasted the "forbidden fruit" already (Open Source). And I don't want to go back.
As a user, this doesn't make any difference, though... less quirky software in the store perhaps, but the rest... nothing. There's actually more "big" software in ios than on Android, but most of that stuff gets ported down the line, too.
Not sure if it still applies with newer phones, but about a year ago, rooting an Android device was as easy as enabled debug mode and starting an APK (which was available in the market) as it used an adb exploit^ Quite funny. Well, a lot of ios devices get rooted via the browser, which is even worse, I guess.

Does Icream 4.0 crash often @Segitz ;

Never on my side. And I am on a nightly rom (i.e. NOT stable by a long shot). I guess it depends on the device and its specific implementation, though. But I've never really had massive stability problems on Android, ever.

Did you install the SuperUser App from the Store?
Kept you waiting
I looked at it, but it says: This app requires that you already have root, or a custom recovery image to work.
this one
I decided to hold off and do a little more reading, but haven't gotten very far on that yet.
That's the one... but you need a rooted device... the app just allows other applications to use superuser rights.
What device do you have? Most answers will be answered in either the Wiki or the Forum of XDA-Developers (my favourite source for device and software infos).

Its the HTC Inspire 4G running 2.3.3 (google play store calls it a Desire HD, but they are close from my understanding).
This is why I was going to read later: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1259821 and this http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC...26_CyanogenMod

Whoa... that's an extremely complex "rooting". My phone (Galaxy S) is rooted by pushing a new kernel... that's it. But I must say, Cyanogen Mod is really worth it... 4.0 is so much better in just every regard, it's ridiculous. But since it's your work phone, I doubt you want to really do it.

My HTC Sensation recently received the upgrade to ICS and I can happily report that it seems to be faster and more stable than before.
Go for Android dude, if only for the fact you aren't benefiting either of the evil giants!

Yeah, I am more drawn to Android definitely, it's pretty much Linux after all, which is what I use on my home PC (Ubuntu 11.10 with a Xfce desktop) but I really like the Windows design with the panel layout and even the font. Small touches like "People" instead of contacts, the way messages pop up from side to side and are highlighted different colors based on what device your friends are messaging you with, very cool stuff.
But I am glad that ICS seems to be more stable, as that is my ultimate most important feature. I'm also not really finding Nokia phones (which are supposed to be really reliable) that run windows in the $250 pricepoint which is where I kinda want to stay on an unlocked phone. Max I will go is $300, and even that has to be a really nice screen.
We'll see though, definitely between android and Windows, keep the impressions and experience coming fellas!

problem is, there's yet to be released a "middle-ground" kinda device for either phone and both are pretty high-end which means unlocked versions are crazy $$..however, Sony announced an Xperia P U which should be there mid-range Xperia phones but I haven't heard about anything for the Note yet. it's so big and different there might just continue to be one version of it

Hmm... I'd take neither and still opt for the Nexus... better support directly from Google (instead of Samsung, which has a horrid history of bad updates). And Sony... which is supposedly even worse (though I haven't actually seen one owning a device from them that really wants to be "cutting edge").
The Note is a HUGE block of a phone, too... but that's a personal thing. Google also recently started selling phones themselves (again)... cannot see the page from here (regional restriction), but I've read that you can get the Nexus directly from Google for 399USD. Not sure if that's a good price, though. It's about 350€ here, from retail (unlocked and no branding at all).
But if it HAS to be one of the two, then I'd probably go with the XPeria ones... they did say they'd enable their phones to unlock the bootloaders, meaning there can be a good Cyanogen Mod rom some time down the road. It's just not as big as the Samsung and the rest of the hardware is very comparable.

screen and Camera are the biggest factors over Galaxy S2, but haven't really checked out the Nexus that much, will look into it. I keep hearing about the Sony support etc...but I just both my wife the xperia Ray, everything was really easy to setup up. No problem with Wi-fi, customizing, just need a Windows PC so I can upgrade to ICS, that's the only problem you need a PC to upgrade which sux. But besides that very smooth, didn't have a problem with MMS either while I was seeing a lot of unlocked phones do. So I think it's just that this isn't the 90's Sony so everything they do is subpar now. Because every Xperia I look at seems to be really high quality, and the camera and Bravia displays are just ridiculous.
Nexus camera being 5mp is a bit of a downer, was hoping for 8...but megapixels isn't everything, if it can do 1080p video I'm sure the camera is sweet.

The megapixels don't mean jack shit^^
I'll tell you what. The S-Amoled with 720P on the Nexus is insanely good. But it is a bit bigger than the SGS2. If the camera is as good as mine (SGS1), I'd give it the benefit of the doubt... I was rather surprised at how good the pictures are from that phones camera... but I am also, by no means, a photograph. Good colors, though (needed to capture some stuff for Uni once, where color calibration and whitebalance was needed).
The SGS is nearly the same phone, but it doesn't get "pure Android", which nearly ALWAYS a minuspoint.

The site has nearly all the hardware specs for all phones available. (though it's not always up to date, as the SGS2 received 4.0 by now).
