House of the Dead 4 is yet another old light gun arcade shooter making its way onto a console thanks to motion controls. I did not have a chance to try out the controls with PS Move so I can’t tell you how that would play though it should not be that different from controlling it with a dualshock. It’s clear that they didn’t put much work into the port, as the game sports sub PS2 level graphics with pretty bad acting for what story they have, and it plays exactly as it would on an arcade machine. I never followed the story for this series and I thought it was going to be all zombies which was not the case. There are several different types of creatures who you will be faced against. The story trying to encompass this makes absolutely no sense, with brief shots to this evil guy talking about setting off a nuclear bomb to lessen the amount of people that are in the world because people have refused to follow nature's plan. The brief cut scenes aren’t enough to hold the story together and the acting is atrocious. The gameplay is your light gun type style, on-rails with target reticle. You have 4 basic controls moving the reticle, reloading, firing, and throwing grenades. Your objective is to kill everything that pops up on screen as fast as you can. The accuracy is a bit iffy with the dualshock’s analog controls, which don’t allow you to accumulate the better critical hits that give you more points and kills your enemy faster which makes the game easier. It will also count towards your final grade for the level. The main game has only 6 levels that should take you less than 10 minutes each. So it shouldn’t take too long to go through the entire game. Each level ends with a boss where you have to shoot at a certain part of its body to kill it. The unlocks for completing the game are not that great either, on the main menu they have an option for extra content. Unfortunately, it turns out to just be behind the scene footage. House of the Dead 4 doesn’t have much to offer in content and it is pretty easy since you can choose how many lives and continues you can have. This game does not offer enough content to warrant the $10 price, even if you are into light gun games. |
