ya the cpu fan barely even twigs... just enough that you know power is there but thats it not even one revolution. ive tried it with both GPUs with one GPU etc their fans start then it all reboots & starts again. ive just tried both GPUs out & running off mobo but still the same. it doesnt get to any post screens or anything ive tried 2 monitors. ive taken cpu out & checked "cant see anything wrong" not that there aint lol
also even the psu fan starts & stops in the reboot

If it doesn't detect the processor, it won't start up at all indeed. Follow goku's advice.
Check the motherboard's manual and swap components for old ones where possible.

hey Luis ya nothing on me old desktop will work with this setup other than basic stuff llike HDD & PSU everything else is non compatible. and ya Viper i think it might be a pull apart check 'all connections' then put back together![]()

It's a frustrating part of building a new computer but it happens. You think you have everything perfectly set and you get the endless boot cycle (and sometimes no boot power at all). You rebuild and it starts up like nothing was ever wrong.
But if nothing else, it does give you a little more experience with the hardware again.
One thing, before you boot up, unplug the PSU from the wall or power strip, then hold the power on button on the case for 45 seconds. Then plug it back in and power up. This will discharge any excess electricity built up in the capacitors from the continual boot cycle which will help them last longer and help with the boot a little.
hey Goku, Viper & Luis well i pulled it apart carefully put it back together carefully IT BOOTED!!!!! when it booted its bios/cmos? had to boot from backup bios it said. it went through a process and booted up.... so im wondering how this could have happened maybe i should clock it back from 4.0? or it might have already with the the backup bios. i hate these little things as Viper has mentioned but i get to play with it more lol ill leave it as is now.....

Are you sure it's "backup bios" and not "reset settings because of CRC" or something? Because the first thing could point to a potential hardware fault.
Kept you waiting
cant remember seeing 'CRC' at all but i remember the backup bios written on screen & numbers were ticking over like installing a program. any other way i could find faulty hardware? im dissapointed i cant put fan on...

If it booted up from the backup BIOS, there's a chance something might have been fried indeed. The BIOS settings have probably been reset to default, check them just in case, at least to have a little more info on what happened.

It's not necessarily "CRC", could be "checksum error" or something else entirely... but a broken bios chip does indeed sound bad.

hmmm well i went into BIOS it had reset to standard so unsure what to do? get another board or wait & see what happens? also whats 'HPET Mode' its either 32bit or 64bit its on 32 does it have anything to do with windows 64bit lol dunno![]()

HPET is the "high performance event timer"... depends on your OS (i.e. 32bit or 64bit)... had some problems on my old system with it (first generation HPET implementation in Vista, but problems only cropped up in Linux)... shouldN't be a problem today. It's for stuff like video playback (and sync) as well as DRM, if I remember correctly.

thanks Segitz, so really all i can do is wait & see what happens now with me mobo. if she dies i guess ill get another one.

I don't know... I never had a dual bios mainboard... Maybe you could reflash the original one or something... or just leave it at that and be lucky... or it could break down any day, too^^

I'd guess it was just recovering from what it thinks is a hardware error. Let ip play out a week or two and see.

This is the purpose of having a board with a dual BIOS. You should be fine. Go ahead and redo your settings, overclocks, etc... Just be sure to stress test everything incrementally to find out what your limits are. You should be able to hit 4.0 Ghz without any problem at all from the BIOS.
And then it could fail again just like it did already.
Feel free to give it another try and see if you run into any trouble. And when it dies again and won't recover, you'll learn not to overclock and buy faster components instead, like I did![]()

Just don't raise the VCore or anything by accident... I once ran my Pentium MMX with Pentium (non-mmx) voltages (i.e. 3.3V instead of 2.8V) and it ran hot like hell... that was in a time WELL before one could set this stuff inside the bios, though (it was all dip switches and jumpers then). But the old processors also were quite sturdy (once HSF of said CPU fell off when I went to a LAN party and it still worked after some hours of gaming^^).
If you want to maximize clocks (safely), I'd also would try some video encoding... that's when my overclocks proved to be mostly unstable, after several hours.

thanks fellas ya ive clocked it to 3.8 see how it goes and just leave standard fan for now. as you say Viper this is the benefit of dual BIOS ill clock it to 4.0 tonight![]()

Nice time bomb, sir.
Sorry to be pessimistic about it, I only want you to be cautious about what you're doing. Also, I would get to play the "I told you so!" guy later![]()
