I'd buy a cheaper CPU (i.e. i5 2500k or 2550k) and get a good amount of RAM and a better GPU (although the 560 is already plenty).

Would you prefer I build you a component list. I can cut that down a few hundred dollars and make it more powerful.

Sure, it's faster, but it's exponentially more expensive than the i5, which is more than fast enough for todays and tomorrows work loads AND can be overclocked just as well...

I usually never go for the cream of the crop hardware, because it is severely overpriced for what it delivers.

I'm using Newegg for pricing. You'll need to use an Australian equivalent.

    CPU: Intel Core i5-2400 - $189.99

    Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H61M-S2H LGA 1155 - $69.99 ($10 MIR)

    RAM: XMS3 8GB (2 x 4GB) - $48.99

    GPU: HIS Radeon HD 7770 - $139.99

    PSU: Corsair CX600 V2 600W - $69.99

Case: Antec Three Hundred Illusion Black Steel ATX Mid Tower - $64.99

OS: MS Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit OEM - $99.99

    Total - $683.93

Replace the GPU with an nVidia GTX 560 Ti for $209.99 and the total is $753.93.

You can save $65 if you use your current PC case.

Smokey, an annoyance to me would be you needing help and not asking for it.

You'll need new RAM with that motherboard anyway. You have DDR2 RAM. The new board requires DDR3 RAM.

By far the best upgrade I have performed on my machine has been the SSD boot drive. Now I just need to RAID 0 about 24 of them...

I'm quite against anything by nVidia that doesn't start with a 6 you know, but yeah, fastest single GPU is always the best way to go, some games will have issues with two cards, and if you get your fast single GPU and decide it's not enough.... Boom back to the shop, buy a second card. Buy two cheap cards off the bat you've nowhere to go.

You want to upgrade in such a way you have wiggle room for a cheap further upgrade in the future.

Check it out, my CPU heat sink is bigger than the card.

You can get away with much less RAM, even though ram is cheap. Worth saving your cash for an SSD, not just because your PC will start up faster, it'll eliminate pauses in game where it's swapping out to HDD. SSDs = smoother gaming, essential for a modern rig.

Yeah, it's overkill if you aren't doing any major graphics or video work that require lots of RAM.

But given that RAM is so cheap these days, it's not an expensive overkill so it's not a problem.

I'm going to build a new system in a couple months, and I think the best GPU for my buck/euro, according to this, should be a Radeon HD 6850. I can actually buy one for 109 euros, which is a very competitive price considering it seems to sport about 70% of the very highest end GPUs power. The closest Nvidia GPU (GTX 560) is currently priced at around 150 € over here.

    Any thoughts?
