If it's academics you're wanting it for, I'd probably wait a bit for Nvidias next cards. Cuda is supposedly better than OpenCL (but that is open, which I prefer) and the next Kepler cards are quite well (that's what I heard) in computing.

I mean academic as in a study of the theoretical rendering capabilities of the card. Not academic as in an academic use.

I blame the English language for having a dozen definitions for every word.

    Ah, ok^^

Then I probably still don't agree... but that has several reasons. First of all the driver situation. AMD got a lot better on both fronts (i.e. Windows and Linux) but still don't come close to Nvidia. The added capabilities in Nvidias driver (for example adding 3D, instead of relying on third party to do the dirty work for them, adding FXAA, SSAO etc) and the better Linux drivers (esp. VDPAU, compared to XVBA) tilt the table for me at the moment... my (new) HTPC will be Nvidia based, because of this. ZeroCore would be cool if Nvidia made it, too... but I can live with a bit more idle power usage. Would prefer "none", though^^

Segitz, I'm still just referring to the theoretical brute force graphics rending capabilities. I said academic angle, not consumer angle.

Doesn't really matter... if you can't "use" it, then all the theoretical power in the world is exactly that... theoretical.

Which is why I said academically. Think more theory than application.

Yes... I sure understand... thing is... those "flops" and "iops" and whatnot... they more often than not don't mean a thing in reality, hence my "disgust".

I'd finally want a better API to use my GPU compute... AMDs HSA initiative might provide that. Just "setting up" the usage of compute is complicated... nothing major, but it's a hurdle that doesn't really need to be there (I'd say much of the same is true for a lot of OpenGL APIs... though not all of them, as Android and Qt offer a limited OpenGL usage without real knowledge^).
