They just completely revolutionized the gaming industry with this move. Expect to see a lot more of this from them and other developers in the future. This enables small studios to skip the harsh contracts and all that involved with getting investors/publishers on board. This enables them to publish their own games directly to us, funded by us. It's an interesting sales model, having someone contribute financially to the development of a project as their way of purchasing it. It requires faith, and would only work this well for developers who have proven themselves in the past, but it's an excellent way for people to get their projects off the ground. It really has the potential to turn the entire industry on it's head.

  2. Nah. If this wasn't DoubleFine, no-one would care.

It's a nice platform for big and loved developers to try out projects their fans want but doesn't make sense in the market, like say something like SimCity 5. But if you or I make this AMAZING demo for a game and ask for funding, even then we won't get near enough.

    Minecraft?

  5. Exception, not the rule.

Don't get me wrong I would love this business model to take over but the excitement from this one exception (and minecraft and some others I'm sure), shouldn't replace reality.

I also feel if more user feedback is asked for in games, it will ruin the games. Every gamer fancies themselves as game designers but when it comes down to it, they suck.

And if more user feedback isn't asked then people will eventually get angry because they helped fund it and want more power over it, then that just takes us to a even worse place ("I funded $50 and i want this" "well i funded $100 and want THIS").

So maybe I wouldn't love for it take over, hm. Well just do it for SimCity 5.

Wow! I completely forgot Minecraft was fan-funded. And on top of that, by some 'nobody' from Sweden. And now within just a year or two, it has its own convention, merchandise, a heavy online video following, and a following of millions of active members. Job well done.

  7. Speaking of which, they did a charity thing recently (in conjunction with humblebundle) and streamed themselves developing a game. Lots of code (java) and art stuff for those that want to look at under the hood of a game.

Those exceptions are reality. This is a new business model that will take time to get going. Also, I did specifically mention that it would only work well for devs who have otherwise proven their ability. You won't see a brand new 4 person team working out of a garage getting 3 million to make a game, but you may see them get 50k, etc... enough to get their first little project going and enough to possibly allow them to make a name for themselves so the next game they make does get a couple million in donations. You never know. These aren't exceptions to any rule, they're just developers who have proven themselves that are reaping the benefits of the trust they have established with their fans.

Tim Schafer talks about the gamer funded Adventure game, Notch & Psychonauts 2, and gives his take on piracy.
