UK game retailer GAME hacked, Passwords obtained

Heads up to anyone who has an account with GAME

Leading UK specialist retailer GAME has had its online security breached in the latest attack by hackers.

Customer information, including email addresses and passwords (stored as plain text) were obtained from the company's website and posted on the internet, according to Softpedia.

There is no word on whether the hackers managed to access any payment or credit card information.

Catalyst-Gaming, a website based in Northern Tasmania, Australia, was also attacked.

I think things like this just keep delaying an online only console/shopping future more and more. I received an e-mail from yahoo after going through hoops to access my e-mail account recently prompting me to change my password because my account may have been compromised. This crap just never seems to end. In the end we as consumers are just going to be forced indirectly to pay more and more for our online shopping to police this. Its not even worth it anymore using a credit card online. It's become such a hassle.

There's NO need to "police" anything, as long as those people handling these websites would adhere to current security standards... salted hashes of passwords has been the norm for decades, and yet still a LOT of people don't use this simple featre (probably 2 lines of code).

Hoever, this isn't everything... by a long shot. But if they don't even adhere to these simple standards, there's no use to go further.

I am so loyal to ShopTo I don't even check other sites anymore (Gold member at shopto now *nerd face*). I used to but gave up when ShopTo was always cheaper and guaranteed game is at your doorstep next day (no extra charge), which is awesome.
I have nothing against others though but only thing that will persuade me to not order from ShopTo would be some unbelievable pre-order bonus from others, which I rarely care about.

Anyway, I am pretty sure it's illegal to lie about security so I believe they weren't hacked, good. I changed my password just in case because it matched couple of others.
