Thread: Games you've finished in 2012 - WINNER: Ivory Soul

  1. Saying that's the one good Terminator game is a rather dubious honor, isn't it? For a time, it was like whatever superhero game being the best superhero game ever before Arkham Asylum in 2009.

Finally got back to and finished...

    5. Batman Arkham City (PS3)

Just in time before the new DLC hits next month. I enjoyed the game, surprising ending, but just did hook me as much as the first Batman game did. It's still an excellent game, just falls into the sequel effect - where the original wows you, the sequel is excellent but just doesn't have the same intial wow factor.

But he is... The world's greatest detective.

    13 - Crysis 2 - Windows

Latest update, DX11 patch, high res textures. Looks OK but not earth shatteringly good, not the benchmark Crysis 1 was, but that's OK because the game is actually fun. Pop in out of cloak (Just like the klingons you can't fire while cloaked), pick off one guy, back into cloak, hide until your energy is back up, repeat.

No big boss at the end, it just sets you up for Crysis 3.

  5. The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings

This is one universe I didn't want to leave. And hell, I didn't know I was in. I would start in the morning and play until night and it didn't even feel like I was playing a game: The presentation, the dialogue, the story, the cities, every small thing about the universe was expertly created and it just drew me in and never let me go.

I mean I can't stress this enough, in most RPGs, after four lines of dialogue I am tapping skip like crazy because I either got the gist of it or I'm bored to tears. Every character I talked to in this game, I was listening to with full attention. It was sooooo refreshing to not have to talk to cliche filler snore-fest characters all the time.

Love the side missions. This is one of those games where side missions are so in depth they can be mistaken for main ones. Absolutely fantastic and most of them bring great intrigue to the location and to key and non-key characters.

So the universe and mission design was absolutely perfect.

Let's start with the negatives. The fighting on Normal gets pretty easy once you get used to it. Aard, attack, run, Aard, attack, run always works. And the game did very little (other than the boss fights) to make you change the way you play. More enemy variety would have been welcome.

Also the skill tree. While it is nice and in depth, it's just badly balanced I felt. Nothing really jumped out at me and made me go "YES! Can't wait to upgrade to that!"...Everything was at "eh, I guess I can use that" level. This took a bit of fun out of levelling up.

That's pretty much it. I am going to enjoy it and soak it in for a few days and then start my Dark playthrough and this brings another huge plus, which is the story, as focused and awesome as it was, still manages to have a lot of paths that changes the game in a lot of major ways. So I can't wait to experience that.

Five months in, and easily contender for GOTY and it is without any doubt what-so-ever, the best WRPG for me.

    9/10.

  6. Right now, Mass Effect 3 is my leader, but that's more of a default standing than anything. Diablo III should be a formidable challenger. So will the new Mario game for the 3DS, and if there's a new Mario game for the Wii U then that deserves some notice. Black Ops 2... unlikely, but a top 10 slot isn't impossible. This is going to be a weak field, for sure. Probably the weakest overall since 2006.

  7. If Black Ops II builds on what Black Ops I started, it will probably be my number one, if not at the very least Top 3. I also have high hopes for Dragon's Dogma based on what I saw and the demo.

    ME3 was forgettable for me.

I probably won't play Diablo III. If it's on PC, it's gotta be on Steam, and I don't LOVE Diablo enough to inconvenience myself out of Steam. A bit nitpicky I know but eh.

Looking at my completed list, Rayman, Journey and Stardust VITA got 9/10s as well. Only Journey might be a contender though.

Well unless they do something crazy with Blops2 like set it in the future with horse riding and stuff.

You can add external games to Steam you know.

  9. I meant more in ease of purchase / price. I don't have a battlenet account and it won't even let me view the game page. Google'd the price, £45!!! Pfft. Case closed. If it was a game I loooooooved even then £45 would have been a bit "r u seruiz!?" so for a game I'm not too much into, pass all the way.

Though I'll probably crack at some point due to hype.

Yeah, lotta money. I wait until they're cheap then pounce.

    14 - Quantum of Solace - Windows

One butt uuuuugly game on PS3, you can tell that COD engine is based on Quake 3 can't you, less ugly on Windows, but still ugly. Finished in one long sitting.

It's OK, missing a great deal of variety. Very samey. Still better than Terminator Salvation though.

Follows the plots of QoS and Casino Royale.

    15 - Dead Space 2 - Windows

First good use of nVidia GTX680 FXAA, cleaned up the jaggies in Dead Space 2 very nicely.

Woah. What can I say, they pumped up the horror 110%. You now fight jaguar type aliens and hoards of screaming children and exploding crawling babies. Haven't seen horror enemies this good since Silent Hill 2s spastic nurses. Only way to describe them really. Game lasts you a good long while, 14 hours or there abouts. Combat is fun, but the puzzles are too damn easy though, nothing requires even a tiny amount of thought. Stasis and telekinesis and too plentiful now too. But damn, what a game. Has to be the premier horror series available, now that Crapcom have screwed up Resident Evil.

I like the jaguar aliens that peep out at you from the corner of a box while their mate is coming round the back to flank you. Awwweeeesome!

Such a good looking game too. Good looking on all platforms too.

Really, really love Dead Space. Have to have a Dead Space 1/2 and 3 marathon when 3 inevitably comes out.

Bye bye Dead Space for a year or so I guess. I love you so.

    (13) I am Alive in just under 7 hours of gameplay ( 90% score rating ) and a 9/10 from me.

I didnt go into this with much expectation considering the polarizing reviews. I decided screw it anyway and gave the game a chance since i love the survival thriller/horror mystery genre. I was more than pleasantly surprised. The game basically consists of combat and platforming. You have a huge hub consisting of a few city blocks that links important main mission areas you need to explore in the game. You can run around looking for resources because they are limited or victims you can aid. It isnt as easy as it sounds though because tons of gangs and cannibals are running around the streets setting their little traps for you to walk into. The city is also covered with toxic dust that makes things even harder when navigating.

I must say i was also surprised at how scary some parts of the game were and even how on edge i was peaking around every corner. So on edge im pretty sure i killed one or two innocents who were just scared and reacting to m presence to protect their own. You dont know who can can trust or even whether its worth it aiding a victim using your valuable resources in this game. The combat does have a bit of a learning curve but when you get it then it really clicks and feels damn good pulling off combo kills. I only did manage to find 13 victims in the game so im guessing i could have probably done a little more exploration. The story is decent and well told although doesnt really bring anything new and the game never really discloses what this event is. As for the platforming its superb. Just dont expect Prince of Persia and you will be fine. Also this game is for patient methodical gamers. If you are not one of those dont even bother. When you take on four guys and you only have one bullet you really cant go rushing in. You also cant run anywhere you want because your stamina drains and you have to plan your platforming movements just as well.

My only complaints about the game is that maybe they could have added a bit less blur with the grain filter and added a little more particle effect like dust like in the spec ops demo i played last night. Also maybe stealth could have been a little more usefull just incase gamers were so inclined to use it. There wasnt much room to use it in the game.

Anyways long story short a great game for anyone who has the patience and loves the survival genre. Now i have even greater expecations for The Last of Us. Good Job Ubisoft!!! Oh and super pricing on PSN also. I would have been happy to pay double.

  13. I was suspicious of it's £12 price and wasn't sure if it would be worth it, but I bought it based on your review. I am a sucker for survival games (S.O.S games on PS2 are among my faves) so would have eventually bought it, but your review gave the nudge.

    Datura

    100%'ed in about 2 hours

If you have MOVE, definitely get it. It is playable with DS3 but some bits are really lame and in some cases downright tedious, so just play with MOVE. It feels great, the hand tech, though might not look like much is very good. The fingers react to the shapes you move around and it feels so natural.

The game itself is cool, great art is open to interpretation they say, and this is definitely one of those cases. Personally it didn't grab me fully but it was intriguing in places.
Gameplay was fun, this is THE game that should have launched with MOVE. Great mechanics that work well at 1:1 mapping, really enjoyed the MOVE gameplay in it. It is pretty on rails though and it acts like it has 'puzzles', but it doesn't really.

So if you want a gameplay more than an experience, you won't like this. I also didn't like the fact prompts kept coming up, it started to feel like you are just playing simon says instead of the adventure.

    Still, if you have MOVE, there is not much to play anyway and this is something pretty unique and definitely worth a go;

    7/10.

  15. Back To The Future - Episode 1,2,3,4,5
I don't think it's fair to count it as five games, so I'll count all of them as one.

Great scott! Some bits were terrible! Most bits were good, some bits were excellent. Two ways you are guaranteed to enjoy this game (1,2,3,4,5 collectively) are (1) You are a point and click nut [which I am] or (2) You LOVE Back To The Future. It stays very close to the source in feel and dialogue and all that. So huge kudos there.

It does have typical PnC genre frustrations but there is a hint system that has various stages and if you click "Need another hint" all the way, you get the solution. I had to use it in a couple of places because the solution was so left field.

Also worth mentioning are the set pieces. I won't spoil when they come but there are set pieces that put you in exciting and 'grand' situations which I found really refreshing.

    Overall a fun ride that has it's many ups as much as it's downs;

    7/10.

@masteratt So whats the verdict on I am Alive? The game seems to be very polarizing.
Last edited by AC!D; 05-14-2012 at 12:25 PM.

  18. Definitely some fantastic ideas in there. The stamina, the ACTUAL survival bit with the ACTUAL lack of items and ammo (I am playing on Survival difficulty as well). Great atmosphere. As you mentioned, lot to take notes for ND for The Last Of Us. Give me better looking, more open I Am Alive for TLOS, and I am happy (and obviously the ND polish in gameplay areas).

The overall package could be....Less arcadey. Like there is a set map and you go from your HQ to one building, then back to HQ to another, meanwhile survivors, which was cool at first, you soon realise just stay there waiting for you to fetch them an item most of the time. Some of the ones are cool though, you are not sure if it's an ambush or they are worth your resources but really doesn't matter that much at the end. None of them tag along nor do you build any proper relationships...They still just stay there.

I am digging the combat, one of the freshest combat experiences by far...Again, suffers from becoming old too soon and could be expanded but very solid foundation there for combat as far as this genre goes.

No verdict yet since I haven't finished it, but unless new mechanics come into play, that's what I figured from the game thus far. I am definitely happy with the purchase, leaving the enjoyment aside, just from how fresh some of these mechanics are.

Ummm. It is still one of my favorites. It really does lose a little luster though. Story isn't quite as epic as I recall. Game play though is solid for its time. It isn't as good as FFVI.

  20. No RPG is.

I really need to get back into the swing of things gaming-wise. Lousy moving has thrown me off course and out of sync.
