    Zipper’s Unit 13

On behalf of the entire team at Zipper Interactive, I am proud to announce a new shooter, Unit 13, designed from the ground up for the new PlayStation Vita. It’s been very exciting developing a game for the first portable console with precision dual analog sticks, the perfect platform for a fast action, hard-hitting, third-person shooter like Unit 13. In addition, Vita’s front and back touch interface provided a unique and fun way to interact quickly with in-the-world elements of the game.

Fast action, on-the-go gameplay was a key goal for the Unit 13 team. The game is designed for players to move quickly into the action, choosing from one of six Operatives with unique abilities to tackle 36 action-packed missions across nine unique locales. Missions come in a variety of sizes and difficulty. Some are smaller bite-sized battles; others are longer, more challenging, multi-objective missions that are a good test for any skilled shooter fan. As you make your way through the variety of missions, you unlock the right to take on the tougher High Value Target (HVT) enemy battles. After completing an HVT mission, you can share them with friends and nearby players through PlayStation Vita’s “NEAR” feature.

The Zipper team put considerable effort into leveraging Vita’s WIFI and 3G functionality to provide exceptional social gaming and competition with friends and opponents from around the world. Unit 13’s live notification interface, enabled through 3G, keeps players up to date on leaderboard positions, new “Daily Challenge” content, new unlocks, shared High Value Target missions, and challenges from friends as they move past you on the leaderboards.

In Co-op, you can play Unit 13 with a friend all with high quality voice chat enabled through the PlayStation Vita. Coop teams compete for top positions on the global, regional, and friend mission leaderboards.
We’re super excited for all of you to give Unit 13 a try. We believe it’s the perfect portable shooter on the best portable gaming platform, the PlayStation Vita. And it’s available right around Vita launch!
    See you on the leaderboards!

Zipper needs to redeem themselves before I give two craps about there titles again after the Socom4 fiasco. I truly don't understand that one, fans don't make the game I know, but Socom fans were some of the most hardcore loyal fans I've ever seen and they told Zipper EXACTLY what they loved about Socom 2 and they just botched it up to appease new FPS players.

Here's a hint--make a separate game for that and give Socom players there hardcore die one time and its over third person lean'n peak shooter. I have no doubts this is arcadedy COD style of run/n gun in a Socom skin. -_-

But I hope they find an audience again, not that they deserve anyone back from the Socom 1 & 2 crowd or the PSP games.

Unit 13: How 3G Expands Social Combat

We have made a lot of progress over the past few weeks, so jumped at the chance to travel from Seattle to San Francisco to show off the latest for Unit 13. If you aren’t up to speed, Unit 13 is a modern-day third person military shooter designed exclusively for PS Vita. As a member of the highly specialised military and intelligence group known as Unit 13, you’ll choose one of six operatives to master 45 challenging, action-packed missions while unlocking new gear, skills, mods, and guns. Each mission is pick up and play and can last anywhere from five to 30 minutes depending on how you decide to play. All missions can be played solo or via online two-player co-op.

We also had Unit 13 connected via 3G to show off the extensive social and competitive features. The in-game notification centre is a hub that provides real-time alerts on status updates, leaderboard positions, and Daily Challenges. Get a high score, post, and see how you are doing against your friends and those Near you, both regionally and globally. You can access all these features via Wi-Fi, but the 3G connectivity allows you access to the information almost anytime and anywhere. This comes in handy when competing for rare “High Value Targets,” which are accessible for scoring high in different missions. High Value Targets unlock at 20 stars and go all the way up to 180 stars. One cool thing about HVTs: if you are on my PSN friends list or available via Near and I defeat a High Value Target, you get a notification to play – even if you haven’t unlocked the mission! It lasts for a finite time, so let’s hope you’re ready for that one shot!

We’re very excited about the positive feedback we’ve received on the game, and how it’s naturally an engaging and competitive social experience with lots of ways to play. Stay tuned to the PlayStation.Blog for more news and updates.

no competitive mulitplayer was a bit surprising, but the feedback and comments across forums at least have been pretty positive. Perhaps Zipper has found a new spark again

Personally, not that interested atm, the flair of Socom has never been recovered in any recent Zipper game I've played. but I'm open to change.

It does play a bit like MGS, but it's based on what character you choose, each have different playstyles.

Demo screamed mediocre to me. It's OK but...It's OK. Zipper makes these games with their eyes closed now and they didn't try hard to do anything new at all.

The stealth missions can be played in a stealthy MGS way but there are a variety of missions ranging from open play like the one after the tutorial in the demo that lets you play the way you want or pure assault COD style missions. There are time limits in some missions and other factors which change things up in every mission. You also get ratings for missions. These star ratings add up and unlock specialty target missions which are tough but damn fun. The only downside is that the game doesnt have a cohesive story but just a bunch of unrelated missions that are fun gameplay wise but lacking in terms of story incentive. You also have different classes ranging from infiltrators to assault specialists and a few more. The co-op is great and the controls are superb. If you do get this let me know and we will organize some co-op action some time.

Anyways heres a review that explains thing better.....http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/20...unit-13-review

Reviews from sites and users seem to be much different, I've heard nothing but praise for the game from user comments. Nothing saying it's amazing, but good solid fun, while gaming sites seem to be trying to dog it...

nice to see a good one though, that's what users are saying exactly actually, generic presentation and start-up, but a real quality shooter underneath. That's how all Socom games are actually, dunno why they fumbled so hard with Socom4 trying too much new stuff I guess, next game will likely be a proper fan request title.

I am skeptical. I don't know if I can trust Zipper anymore. Socom 1 and 2 where good but after that they kinda went down the tube.

^Try the demo. It's a 3rd person shooter 101. Nothing new but solid mechanics, as they should be, since Zipper has been making these games for years now. I might get it on the cheap, otherwise playing random missions for points and unlocks in single player doesn't do much to excite me.

cheers. i won't be getting it just yet but maybe some time in the future. at the moment i'm playing Uncharted... i'm enjoying it as much as any uncharted to be honest, but i do have to say, it takes a bit of getting used to on the Vita due to the control layout and the smaller screen. i'm enjoying the little touch screen moments too.

Yeah Uncharted is great. Didnt take me too long with the screen or the controls but im not an old man yet

Anyways i hope you guys do get this as a rental or bargain bin buy eventually. Its really addictive. Its kind of like the Club meets Socom meets the addictivness of the Super Stardust leaderboards with the payoff being cool boss fights and bragging rights against your friends.

    age is but a ... number? i can't remember....

i really loved the demo of Unit 13 and would definitely consider getting it at some point. my reactions aren't that brilliant though, hence liking turn-based RPGs. i have Uncharted on easy (not really easy all though i considered it LOL) and with auto-aim on. the only very very small gripe i have is that you don't seem to be able to save your progress (if you can then please tell me how). i just got back after solving a puzzle with tumblers and now ii have to find the last rubbing again! damn it! anyway, i'm loving the Vita more and more every day and can see it eating up more time than my PS3 eventually, something i thought i would ever say about a handheld. Kudos to Sony for that
