    Skyward Sword?

I'm surprised nobody is talking about it. I'm thirteen hours in, and I'm only halfway through the third dungeon. This game is massive, and I'm loving it.

    Thoughts? Progress?

Because without the "1337" and "Cowboys!", we'd be the Wyld Stallynz.

  2. I plan on buying it in early December after I get paid. I'm pumped for the title. First major Zelda console title since 2006? Sign me up.

GameInformer seem a bit generous with there reviews, but they did give it a 10/10...I've heard nothing but goodness about it, and how much the story is part of the game now and has outdone previous titles in the story department. I'm also backed up a bit, Have to play Uncharted 3 and maybe get Dragon Age 2 before I ever get to this and Xenoblade.

I may have to wait a while....we're holding it as a Christmas present to the whole family.

I loved it! It's a great example of showing how full-on motion controls can be implemented into a video game without feeling tacked on. It certainly does improve the gameplay experience by forcing you to actually think a bit before striking and not doing some mindless button-mash or waggle.

  7. That's what I also heard. Blind combat will get you nowhere. There is more strategy involved, which is a nice feature.

    Here is my impressions:

Coming hot of the heels of the stunning Uncharted 3, Skyward Sword (even w/the component cables) makes me wish the Wii had more graphical oomph. I can't help but see the jaggies ... everywhere. Even my wife who just finished (the great) "Costume Quest" is disappointed in what Skyward Sword is pushing out.

I'm also annoyed with the controls. I'm dislike the fact that SS controls the same way as OoT did over a decade ago. Only move around w/one stick. I can't use the Wii Mote to move the camera other than to center it. . . . I can't help but wish I had a dualshock or the 360's pad. I do wish the Motion Plus would make up for it.... however I've found on multiple occasions that just waggling the controller in sword fights is far and away more effective in battles than lining up where to strike. The Lizadalfos (sp) encounters alone show this to be true.

Puzzles so far are fun, but nothing head scratching. (in the yellow light area now) so take that for what you will.

My wife is already done with her time in SS. She is too frustrated w/the graphics and controls and gladly went back to Uncharted 3.

I'm enjoying SS though I must admit mostly because it has Legend of Zelda on the box.

I also dont understand why they didnt give us the option to use the classic controller. There is no need to further promote MC with their new console coming out.

  10. Well, when was the last time Nintendo did ANYTHING we expected? Twenty years ago?

Well hitting the eighteenth hour of play, and about to start (what I believe is) the Water Temple, I have to say that I'm still fully invested in the game.

Which is a stretch for me. Usually when I play a game, I lose interest within the first six to seven hours and then just have to force myself through it. None of this is forced. I haven't felt this way about a game since, well, the first time I played Ocarina of Time. I love all the characters: new, old, and revamped.

Combat is the best and worst part about this game to me. On one hand, using the new controls to battle enemies in interesting and inventive ways is really something. New and old items are great, too. The fact that I can re-center the MotionPlus is a huge advantage, too. The bad hand of these controls, though, is that they're still far from perfect. I find myself getting frustrated when I'm attempting to perform a thrust, only to find that I have to do it harder, but if I do it too hard, the Nunchuk moves, causing a flip slash instead.

Graphically, it's one of the prettiest games I've seen. Too bad the Wii isn't more powerful, since it seems like it can't load too large of an area at once (this was especially apparent during the third dungeon). I don't know exactly what it is, but this game gives me a really big Kingdom Hearts/Disney vibe in the best ways. Also, I'm still not fully used to the lips that it seems Link has grown.

All in all, I'm really glad I've been playing this. I feel like games haven't really been a part of my life at all within the last few months, and they've been more an afterthought of something I used to enjoy. Even playing Super Mario 3D Land just didn't feel as fun as it should have. Skyward Sword is renewing my faith in gaming and making me glad to still consider myself a gamer.

I'd be talking about it but it only released in Australia today. and then i probably won't get to play it until Saturday night. and then i'm really torn between playing this and Skyrim. that game has me so hooked. i just don't know how i'm going to divide the time between two such large games.

  13. I'd say finish Zelda first because the amount of gameplay, I'd say, is more finite for that game than it is for Skyrim.

I started playing Thanksgiving morning, about 2-3 hours only on Thursday before shipping out for the feast. I'm now at 28. I can't stop. I have only a few nitpicking issues with the game thus far. For the longest time I've been used to using the item button to actually perform any action with my selected item, but in this, once you equip it, use of the item becomes assigned to "A" and the "put away" function reverts over to "B". Very strange configuration.

And perhaps I missed something with WM+, but is there a reason my aiming isn't done via the method in TP? Why the bounding box? Can't we have both precise sword control AND projectile Nintendo?

And I hate hate hate hate no land overworld and just this stupid sky.

Seeing as the whole game is built around WM+, it really would not be feasible to give that as an option. Regular baddies would be impossible to defeat without choosing which way you want to swing. So unless you're putting sword controls on the second stick, which would likely defeat the whole purpose of wanting the classic controller, for use of said stick, it could not work.

I agree on the item thing. So many times I've messed up using an item because I want to press B instead of A, slowly ruining my life.

Seriously. As far as 1:1 control, it's awesome, but it feels like a step backwards in every other capacity.

I still don't feel that WM+ is 1:1. The more time i spend with it the more I feel hoodwinked with Nintendo laughing it's way to the bank.

They laughed at me w/Red Steel but promised WM+ would fix it for Red Steel II. It did no such thing. Wii Sports Resort sword fights always came down to who could just swing their remote up and down the fastest. Why did I think this would be different now?

PlayStation Move has provided a much more "realistic" environment than WM+ has thus far.

I'll keep playing Skyward Sword... but I gotta admit WM+ isn't doing it for me... and I was really hoping it would.
