No Secret of Mana love?

I like the game quite a bit and it was in my top 10 the year it was released (1993, I believe), but not that high up, I'm afraid.
It has been a while since I've played it, though. Might be worth a second go-round.

Story-wise it isn't the greatest, but I love the game alot. Probably would be in my top 50. Maybe top 25 depending on how nostalgic I'm feeling that day.

Yeah, I don't remember too much about the story. And it is available on the VC. Might be worth the eight bucks for a trip through nostalgia-land.

Its a very good purchase on the VC, I got it and my wife and I went through it. She loved it, as it was her first time with the game. I may start playing through it again tonight...If only they would release FFVI on VC...

They did. Well, the original 1994 port (as FFIII), but it's out there, so you don't quite have the polish of the 1999 PS-X cut, which is probably the best version out there, but it works just fine.

Halo 2 used to be on the list, but was pushed out. It isn't any particular dislike towards the franchise, though I have been critical of the single-player's storyline for being too light on narrative. The characters aren't particularly memorable, apart from Cortana, and they seem completely interchangeable. There is no particular reason for me to care apart from humanity getting destroyed. While it may be more in depth with the tie-ins, they haven't done a particularly good job emphasizing the story material in the game and what they do have feels inadequate. Halo 2 tried the hardest to break through that barrier and actually succeeded with the Arbiter, to a degree, but even that felt a bit half-baked. Modern Warfare has come under similar criticisms, but the characters, at least, are not only recognizable, but their personalities (mainly Price) help us through the narrative. If not for Cortana in Halo, it wouldn't matter, at least to me. The multiplayer is, of course, terrific and always a blast to play, but for me that's one side of the coin. I'd like to care more about the single-player for the Halo games (especially 2) because the art direction, game design, and gameplay are terrific, but the soul is lacking.

I would say you would need at least one of the Halo series on there just because of its multiplayer alone. It really built the foundation for FPS multiplayer on consoles.
Also, I'm balls deep in SoM again. Damn you nostalgia!

Shame they didn't put nearly as much time into the single-player, which was filled with a lot of exciting possibilities from a story perspective. If I were to compile a grouping of the 10 most influential games of the 2000's, it would absolutely be in the top three or four with GTAIII, Wii Sports, Guitar Hero, and Portal somewhere in the mix.

I would agree, for me anyway...I just spent so much time with the multiplayer...By far the most important aspect of most games to me. I consider single player a bonus in most games. Look at games like ShadowRun...Only multiplayer, got terrible reviews for it, and is probably on of my top 5 360 games.

Part of that, I suppose, is because FPS games have been generally challenged when it comes to storytelling. Half-Life has evaded the trap and so have a few others. The limitations of the medium, mainly because of the silent protagonist syndrome, have hobbled extremely interesting games with either one-dimensional stories or stories that are damaged because of the self-imposed limitation (Bioshock is the most prominent example I can think of). Half-Life kinda, sorta gets a pass because the characters around Gordon Freeman are interesting and he debuted when it was okay to not have voice acting (though that had been crumbling around 1998 when the original HL came out).
And a great multiplayer game is always a treat, don't get me wrong, but for a lot of games it's just one component of a larger mosaic.

#15 is pretty high, I'd say.
