    Sound Shapes

The PlayStation Vita had a solid showing at E3 2011 with a nice variety of well executed and impressive titles that did a fantastic job of showing off the new handheld’s technical wizardry. For me though, the standout title was Sound Shapes, a music-based platformer that feels like a spiritual mashup of the Bit.Trip series and LittleBigPlanet.

The gameplay is fairly straightforward since all you have to do is guide a suction cup-covered ball capable of sticking to certain surfaces around each level, avoiding threats along the way. The kicker is that as you progress through levels, you collect orbs that correspond to musical instruments and notes. Even the levels themselves are built in such a way that platforms and objects make music as well. So as you play the game, you’re actually “playing” the score too, and when you’re building levels, you’re also building an interactive symphony too. Nifty, huh?

It sounds a bit trippy, and it is, but when you see it in action, you can’t help but grin. As I hopped my way through several levels, watching and listening in amazement as the platforms bouncing between posts served as a bass line and laser beams acted as cymbals. And because everything is timed to the same beat, each new piece you activate fits perfectly and listening to the score being built piece by piece is just fantastic.

Building levels will be relatively familiar to anyone who has seen or spent any time with LittleBigPlanet’s level editor, albeit on a much smaller scale. Using the Vita’s rear touch pads, you can stretch and pull blocks to your preferred specifications and then place them around the level. The collectible orbs that you scatter around levels can be assigned a wide variety of musical properties (drum, guitar, piano, synthesizer, etc.), as can hazards like a laser-shooting beacon or even platforms. You use the front touchscreen to drag the objects around the level and then hold them down to snap them to the level. If you want to see how your level plays, you simply hit play, and you are instantly dropped into the space.

There are dozens and dozens of empty levels for you to build in, and each one flows into the next, allowing you to essentially build a massive musical score consisting of all of your levels. Each level’s music also carries over into each new area, but only to a point, so as you move from level to level, the earlier portions will start to fade out, acting as a kind of level-based crossfader. It’s a wild concept, but it also happens to be damn cool.

There weren’t too many surprises at this year’s E3 but Sound Shapes was definitely one of the biggest. It’s hard to say what its mass market appeal might be, but for potential Vita owners looking for something original and innovative, Sound Shapes should most certainly be on your radars.
Innovative games are already coming guys..Everyday shooter was one of the best Indie titles that has released on any store. If these guys have something on Vita, I think everyone should consider it a launch. this is gonna be an awesome experience, check out videos and see how tight the platforming is too--should feel like classic Mario jumps.

well it is different kind of beast.
it is simpler and i hope it is easier to make levels/songs in it.
it is perfect for handheld - short time plays. like just few songs.
and i hope many different artist will be interested in making songs/levels in it.
well i think sony should even pay some artists to make free songs on. it would look nice in commercials.
so i think this could be strage little yet very successful game.
well at least i can see me playing a shit out of it

Picking up my Vita mid May and this is definitely my first purchase. One of my top PSN games was Everyday Shooter, this definitely looks like more of the same magic...

PSNstores.NEW SOUND SHAPES SCREENS HINT AT POSSIBLE SUPERBROTHERS COLLABORATION
    by Chris K

Sony released some new Sound Shapes screens today, check the gallery for all 9 of them. While more Sound Shapes screens are always welcomed on PSNStores, I want to know who the designer is.

The art in all nine of those screens looks awfully similar to the pixel art style of Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP. If these levels are in fact done by Craig Adams, Sound Shapes just got even more awesome. While we have not received any official confirmation, what do you think about my theory?

    PlaystationBlog.Superbrothers + Jim Guthrie X Sound Shapes

A message from a representative at Superbrothers, written in the midst of a spring thunderstorm in the hill country at the Quebec/Vermont border.

It is with immense pleasure that we are announcing our involvement with a videogame project known as Sound Shapes. We are extra excited to be contributing alongside sworcery maestro Jim Guthrie. This represents the latest in a series of Superbrothers X Jim Guthrie a/v collaborations dating back to 2005′s musical film Children of the Clone and 2008′s Dot Matrix Revolution, but this will be our first a/v collaboration since 2011′s cult classic videogame Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP.

Much like Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP, Sound Shapes is a made-in-Toronto DIY videogame, it’s unusually collaborative and it has a heavy emphasis on synesthetic audiovisual style. What’s more, the people making Sound Shapes are all basically our very best pals – they’re the folks with whom we play board games, drink the beers, go skating and play hockey. On every level it’s an honor and a thrill to be involved.

The Superbrothers + Jim Guthrie collaboration will take the form of a Sound Shapes ‘album’ – a series of thematically connected & musically-linked levels known as CORPOREAL.

Sound Shapes is coming to PS Vita, and it’ll be available before too long. Get psyched!!!

    The Collaborative Process

After some initial discussion with Queasy Games we chose to explore some of the concepts in prior Superbrothers films including Children of the Clone and Dot Matrix Revolution, so Torontronic is populated by computers, mainframes, office workers and water coolers. My mom was one of the first female computer programmers in Canada and my father worked as a mainframe computer salesman for decades, so it was nice to set aside the skeletons and space babies for once. Meanwhile, the videogame design takes the friendly platforming mechanics of Sound Shapes and stretches them in the direction of Impossible Mission-style puzzling.

The last time Superbrothers and Jim Guthrie collaborated on a videogame with sworcery, the staff at Superbrothers was responsible for the core concepts, sound design concepts, game design, as well as all of the art, animation and writing. Superbrothers brought Jim Guthrie into the project, figuring out the musical tone of the project and building on a years-long creative relationship. Capy, the independent videogame studio in Toronto, enabled and co-created the project every step of the way, getting it to the finish line in style.

With this new collaboration the configuration is quite different. In Torontronica – the game design, level design and sound integration are being handled by the Sound Shapes experts at Queasy. The order of operations was a little different this time around too. On S:S&S EP, many of the songs predated the project and I was able to create the world and concepts by listening to specific songs, many of them pre-existing compositions from Jim. In this case, the art assets were created without a specific soundtrack, and then it was up to Jim to craft his sounds to fit the look and concept.

Of course, the real work took place at Queasy & Capy, where a wide-ranging assortment of designers & creators – the Sound Shapes experts – put all the pieces together. Thanks so much for all your hard work folks, it has been a pleasure contributing to your efforts!

If you’re going to be at E3, feel free to stop by the Sony booth for some hands-on time!
    that's just brilliant.

Sound Shapes Confirmed for PS3 and PS Vita + Video of Jim Guthrie’s Cat

+ Posted by Matthew Kumar // Sound Shapes Team

Look, E3 is coming up fast, and we know there’s all kinds of hot news coming at you from everywhere. So over here at Queasy HQ, we’ve decided to kick things off a little early with pretty much the biggest announcement we’re allowed to give you right now: Sound Shapes is coming to PSN on August 7th. That’s… like… a few weeks away! Are you breathing into a paper bag right now to avoid hyperventilating? We are, which is making it kind of hard to type. And if you’re not, you should be, because we’re also taking this opportunity to sneak out the fact that Sound Shapes is, day-and-date, also coming to PS3.

Yes. That thing you have under your TV, or maybe beside it (or possibly on top, but that sounds kind of dangerous, man!). And no, we haven’t been looking in your windows; we’ve been too busy making Sound Shapes and pricing it at $14.99 for BOTH VERSIONS. Buy it on PS Vita or PS3, and enjoy it on either system! We know. We’re freaking out too!

Through the magic of crossplay, you’ll be able to share content between the two systems without even having to really think about it. It’s all thanks to the “cloud” which floats above us like a benevolent data god. Save your campaign data up in the cloud, and download and resume on either platform. Maybe you’ll start creating a song at home on the PS3, but then decide that it’s not really the place to compose your latest masterpiece! Just download it to your PS Vita and make some beats on the bus. Then get off the bus several stops late, in a part of town you don’t know that well, and make some beats there! Then get another bus home, probably.

Oh, and the community is completely shared, so if a friend only has a PS3, or you only have a PS Vita (or any permutation of that) they can still see the levels you’ve made on the other system. And you can therefore see ALL the levels everyone has made and uploaded. Which will hopefully be a ton of levels. We’re really looking forward to what you guys do.

In fact, let’s talk about this a bit: You might be aware that we’ve been collaborating with visual artists and musicians for our campaign levels, and most recently revealed that our pals Superbrothers and Jim Guthrie provided the art and music for Corporeal, a four-song concept album that explores the way in which music can free us from the corporate machine… if it doesn’t crush us first.

It’s been a lot of fun working with those guys and we’re really happy with the way the levels have turned out. They mix up the gameplay and offer a classic Jim Guthrie soundscape that’s a fun contrast to other campaigns. And while the levels themselves are cool, it’s super fun to play with all of the music and graphics in the editor–everything, and we mean everything, from the campaign records can be mixed and mashed up with other records to create your own tunes and levels.

Anyway, at the top of this post you can watch a video we made in Jim’s basement where he attempts to clear the levels in his own album (spoiler: he dies). There is also a demo of how the loop-based music system works for remixing campaign tracks in the editor mode. Also featured: One of Jim’s, like, 18 cats. He likes cats.

Is it too late to change the album title to “Chicken Dinner?” The answer is yes. Yes, it is too late.

If you’re coming to E3, we hope you come by and check out Sound Shapes. We’ll have both PS Vita and PS3 on the floor with content from four of our campaign records and we’ll be showing the cross functionality between the two versions. If you can’t make it to E3, that’s okay because if you didn’t notice the game is out on August 7th. Just spend that time regulating your breathing with a paper bag and you’ll be fine.

Kotaku.Sound Shapes Ain’t A Loser, Baby. It’s Got Three New Tunes From Beck.
    Evan Narcisse

The best music collection to come out all year may just be upcoming PS Vita game Sound Shapes. It's already got tunes from Jim Guthrie and Deadmaus and now adds new music from still-skinny-after-all-these-years superstar Beck.

According to Pitchfork Media, the singer/songwriter best known "Loser" will be contributing new works "Touch the People", and "Spiral Staircase". Just like the other songs in Sound Shapes, each track will be a playable level. Sound Shapes comes out on August 7th.
i remember thinking that would be great if they have different artists making levels for sound shapes
and surprisingly that's the case this time...
    and
after seeing how visually different the other levels look
i wonder how beck's one will look.

i would love to have some levels by

    but beck is nice too.

Sales won't reflect that, but perhaps the second game will (if there is one of course. Sony could buy them I suppose)

If you pre-ordered I think you get a little bit of cash back because it's part of some summer deal along with Papo and Yo. Not exactly sure of the details, but as a Plus member the game is like $11. Good deal, great game, I'm really enjoying it more than I thought I would.

    Pros
    Amazing Soundtrack
    Solid, Responsive Platforming
    Simple and Powerful Level editor
    Varied Difficulty/High Replay Value

    Cons
    Single Player only
