Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time - March 27(EU)

ly Cooper Thieves in Time is real. You know that from the news out of PlayStation's E3 2011 Press Conference, but that was just a trailer of what's to come. I've seen the full E3 demo. I can tell you it looks good -- really good -- but I couldn't help myself from asking questions about the developer when I was watching the game. Namely, "Who the hell is Sanzaru Games?"

The answer is simple. Sanzaru is a San Francisco Bay Area developer that noticed one its favorite franchises wasn't getting a fourth installment and thought that sucked. Still, I'm getting ahead of myself. Years ago, some folks broke away from Activision and created Sanzaru. The developer made Ninja Reflex for the Wii and DS and moved on to porting Secret Agent Clank to the PS2. But when Clank was about done, these folks decided it was time to do something they loved.

They ponied up the cash for a PlayStation 3 development kit and sat down to create a Sly Cooper demo. From scratch. With no assets from Sucker Punch -- the developer that created the franchise but had since moved on to Infamous -- Sanzaru went to work on their version of the "Thievius Racconus."

In a month, Sanzaru created a playable demo of what it though Sly in HD should be. Sony agreed with the vision and -- perhaps more importantly -- so did Sucker Punch. That led to Sanzaru porting the original PS2 games to the PS3's Sly Collection while working on what would go on to become Sly Cooper Thieves in Time.

When I heard the guys behind Sanzaru talk about their game, it was clear how much they care about this franchise. They had nothing but glowing things to say about Sucker Punch and its three Sly games, but at the same time, they were full of ideas on how to make Sly relevant again. They kept the idea of starting fresh -- they're not reusing code from the games they ported but instead are learning techniques from it. They're intent on "staying true to the spirit" of the original games, and from the two levels I saw, I think they're on track -- this looks like what you'd expect a new Sly to look like on the PS3, and its packing familiar faces, too. It's super-slick and expands on the ideas we all associate with the franchise.

It sucks, but that's all I can tell you right now. At least the important stuff is known -- you know that Sly Cooper Thieves in Time is real, you know the story of Sanzaru Games, and you know that this game looks good. I can't wait to tell you about it this Tuesday.

Wow this game looks top notch, but I have to get my hands on the Collection before I tackle this title, so I'm sure this game will be back logged with the 50 other titles on my list.

Playstation.Blog: What’s New In Sly Cooper: Thieves In Time?

Wow! I just realized that it has been quite a while since I have posted to the PS Blog – after the busy summer tradeshow schedule we have hunkered down to really concentrate on making Sly Cooper: Thieves in Times the best game of 2012! Now with the new year approaching fast I am back to tell you more. Over the summer I spent a lot of time showing our progress on the game and talking about how we are making sure we stay true to the core of the Sly Cooper series – but now I want to start talking about the NEW things we are bringing to Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time.
When we played the old Sly Cooper games on the PS2, we loved the stories about the Cooper clan ancestors and their various thieving abilities. Something that is really exciting and fun for Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time is that you can not only travel back in time to meet these ancestors but you will also have the ability to play as the Cooper Clan ancestors! As you proceed through the game each episode you encounter features a new time period with a new playable ancestor. Each new member of the Cooper clan has their own unique and powerful abilities that open up a whole new range of game play in the huge environments. This is one of the coolest aspects of Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time – meeting these characters, learning more about them, and then getting to experience a whole new set of kick-ass game moves and skills that you have never seen before. Each time a new character in production comes on line and is added to the game, they instantly become my new favorite character of the series!

The first ancestor we want to show off is Rioichi Cooper, the master of the Ninja Spire Landing! We were introduced to him back in the original Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus and learned about his cool Ninja ability. Now, when you get to play as Rioichi, you will see how much more powerful the original master’s techniques are. For instance, by focusing his energy Rioichi can execute his Leaping Dragon Technique and span great distances between spires.

Rioichi, it turns out, is not only an uber-Ninja but is also the inventor of sushi, his famous restaurant providing the perfect cover for a night stalking ninja thief! We really wanted to explore the character of each of Sly’s ancestors (they are all very different in both ability and personality), and this leads to some very entertaining dialogue as they meet and get to know their descendant and his crew. But of course, once Sly is united with his ancestor he becomes one of the gang, hanging out in the hideout ready to venture out for some Ninja Thieving fun at a moment’s notice.

Anyway, that’s it for now, but don’t worry, I will be back soon to talk about new characters and other cool stuff in Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time as we head towards the New Year!

Is Insomniac having any serious input for this game?
Not that I don’t trust you guys, but for a bit of extra peace of mind

  10. It looks most promising thus far. It doesn't appear they're detracting too much from what made the first three Sly games work in their various respects. So I, for one, am intrigued. I hope the writing is as sharp because that was half the fun, listening to the banter.

If this ends up being as good as the gameplay vids suggest i wouldnt mind if Sony handed over the Jak and Ratchet franchises to Sanzaru.

  12. I'm still hoping the All 4 One endeavor was nothing more than an aberration since the first two ventures on PS3 were pretty good.

    wrong thread?

  14. Kinda, sorta. He was talking about Sanzaru, the guys who remade the Sly trilogy and this new one, taking the reins for the next Ratchet game, and I'm hoping that the current devs can get their head out of their ass and make a better game next time.

PlaystationBlog.Get Your Design in Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time

How would you like to see your design become part of a real video game?

Well, now you can, thanks to the Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time competition that will start today, Friday April 20th.

Take a look at this video from Sanzaru’s CEO Glen Egan talking about the competition:

    Exciting isn’t it?

So just to recap: Sly is a sneaky raccoon descendant of a long line of master thieves. In this brand new adventure, he embarks on a mischievous journey with his loyal friends Murray and Bentley.

Here’s a short trailer, just to give you an idea of the mayhem that awaits you…

During his mission, packed with epic boss battles, dangerous missions and stealthy moves, he will find some precious treasures scattered around. A treasure can be practically anything; from a lamp to a teapot to a precious ring… you name it!

And now we want YOU to free your imagination and create something that you think Sly might want to steal during his mission – and bring back to his hideout. Remember, as Glen said: no living animals, no weapons (Sly is a pacifist thief, after all) and preferably an object that can be carried on your shoulders.

The mechanic is very simple: draw an object you think could be a great in-game treasure. You can use any computer programme (Photoshop, or good old Paint), or simply paper and pencil (you’ll have to take a picture or scan it, in this case). Then, upload your creation here: together with a short description of what that item is.

You don’t have to be Picasso! Just draw something simple and original, and use the description to explain clearly what you want it to be.

The best design from each country will be picked by Sanzaru and will win a PS Vita and a 16BG Memory Card. But that’s not all! The winners will also gain access to the second round of the competition – among all local winners, Sanzaru will pick EIGHT final winners that will see their designs transformed into real in-game treasures!

This means that, once the game is out this Autumn, you’ll get the chance to steal your own treasure.

    What are you waiting for?
    ...

  20. Can't pass up a chance to win a Vita. And why is Bentley in a wheelchair?

There's a special kind of nerd though, who thinks computers will overtake mankind in thirty years, changing humanity in ways incomprehensible to us now, ignoring the third of the world without electricity. It gives spiritual significance to technology developed primarily for entertainment and warfare and gives nerds something to obsess over that isn't the crushing vacuousness of their lives.
