We've all heard about them, and some of us used to respect what they did until now. Anonymous, the infamous group of hackers who claim to do their work for good causes, has started a cyber-war with Sony that has succeeded in bringing down the PlayStation Network twice now, with no end in sight to the current outage.
Let's take a look at some of the claims they have made to back up their attack. They said they attacked Sony because it was suing people who were hacking the PS3, such as the iPhone hacker George Hotz. They claim they meant no harm to Sony's PlayStation Network users when they brought it down the first time, and came back out saying that they were going to change their tactics for attacking Sony. This was the first lie. More on that later.
When they did change their approach, which went through a series of useless tactics ranging anywhere between ordering pizzas to Sony exec's houses to failed attempts at organizing worldwide sit in boycotts at Sony stores, they realized they weren't getting far. That, and they were being made out to look like a bunch of immature brats who had no real power and made empty threats to try to look cool. The internet equivalent of leaving a burning bag of poo on someone's doorstep. They were failing, and the gamers who already hated them for bringing PSN down the first time were laughing at them the whole time.
So, they stepped up their attacks. PSN service became sporadic over the coming days, and finally was brought down all together a second time. Sony actually shut the service down from within while trying to find the source of the attacks and a way to deal with them. At first Sony remained tight lipped about the cause, but eventually their developers, like Q Games and Media Molecule, began letting it slip that it was likely caused by an external attack. Eventually Sony decided to admit it, and said service could be out for a couple days.
All along, AnonOps denied any responsibility, which is where lie number two comes into play. Well, more of a contradiction than a lie... Anonymous is not a centralized group of hackers, but instead is made up of many "Anons" that loosely coordinate attacks, but have no real system of authority. As such, one group of "Anons" doesn't have to follow orders given by another. So, while AnonOps may have taken the official stance that they were not responsible, that was only one of their many faces talking. In the end, Anonymous (who officially claimed as a collective that they were not out to hurt the PSN user) is still attacking PSN, regardless of whether one group within Anonymous denies responsibility or not.
Then comes lie number 3, where Anonymous claimed that they succeeded with their mission of getting the cases against GeoHot dropped. What they didn't say is the case against Alexander Egorenkov, the other hacker they claimed they were coming to the defense of, is still playing out in Germany. So, this shows that they never actually succeeded in getting their demands met to begin with, and instead were cutting and running because they realized this whole thing had gotten out of their control and splinter hacker groups were still attacking PSN and ruining Anonymous' image.
Lie number four also relates to them claiming success over Sony dropping the case against GeoHot. Their list of demands (only one of which they claim was met) was released on April 5, 2011. Sony's settlement with George Hotz was filed almost a week prior to Anonymous releasing their list of demands from Sony, thus proving even that point a lie.
In addition, their demand that Sony restore the ability to modify your PS3 operating system was never met, yet they still tried to paint the picture that since Sony settled out of court with GeoHot, they were riding off into the sunset victorious. That they had somehow done the Sony customer a service by taking their ability to play what they paid for away from them. Wait... wasn't this whole thing about Sony taking away abilities that they paid for? Lie number 5.Sony Computer Entertainment America (“SCEA”) and George Hotz (“Hotz”) today announced the settlement of the lawsuit filed by SCEA against Hotz in federal court in San Francisco, California. The parties reached an agreement in principle on March 31, 2011. As part of the settlement, Hotz consented to a permanent injunction.
And of course, the most obvious lie that Anonymous states, over and over again... That information is free. Yet, they remain Anonymous. So, it must only be free unless you want to know who they are... Then their hypocrisy shows it's ugly face once more.

When it comes to certain things, like targeting Bank of America for instance, they can be considered respectable actions.
And number 2 is a lie, as Anon IS a group of fringe groups. Like saying "we'll stop attacking you. well, some of us will."

No it's not, a lie is not the truth, the truth being that Anonops (which is the group that is attacking Sony, and who said they have nothing to do with this, see below) may not directing the attack, however people with in the group might be taking up themselves to attack which is exactly what they admitted to and is what you are accusing them of.
and when did they ever say they succeed in either the Geoholtz case or their demands?
and just because of some seeming respectable things does not excuse them from attacking innocent people(not this PSN issue or the one a few weeks ago), soliciting teenage girls for explicit photos, and so on just because they consider it justice. This inherently the problem with a group like anon is that they can't control all their "members."
I'm getting tired of defending them. They aren't they only people that can hack a system, we honestly have no idea what is going on, and I don't entirely believing what Sony has been saying.
and I restate that was not a Media Molecule sponsored facebook.
Edit: this should make you happy though:
Solid, you're saying AnonOps claimed no responsibility, yet they're saying other "Anons" (which are part of the whole of Anonymous) are possibly behind these attacks. That's the point I'm trying to make, just because one branch of Anon denies it, doesn't mean that some of the very people who were putting these attacks together did not decide to keep attacking despite some within their ranks wanting to scale back attacks on PSN.
Because they are decentralized, you can't just say that because one group amongst them denies responsibility, even if that group was leading the effort to coordinate the attacks, that they are not still going against their word.
ANONYMOUS said they wouldn't do it anymore, not AnonOps. The video where they state it mentions nothing of AnonOps. AnonOps says that other Anons could be doing it, and since they are part of Anonymous, Anonymous is still attacking PSN. Period.
Also, you have provided no proof at all that Media Molecule doesn't run that page as well as the other one, and the point is irrelevant anyway since Q Games' Dylan Cuthbert also came out the same day saying the exact same thing. The following day, Sony also said it.
As for Anon's other actions, I never said I supported them to begin with, but many people did look at them favorably. That's all I meant. They have done some things that can be considered good, but their nature as a group of splinter groups means that they are incapable of only doing good, so events like those you depicted are bound to take place. There is no true order amongst them, no code they all adhere to.
Your point is completely valid apart from the lie part, thats all.
and the Media Molecule is just common sense, and I provided enough evidence in the other thread to disprove it, do you want me to tweet them and get them to say it's not their facebook.
Why don't they have it on any of their other facebooks? Why haven't they tweeted about it? Why isn't on their own site?
Edit: this "VERY IMPORTANT ANNOUNCE" and they post on one facebook page?
I'll agree with your first point, I edited the story to clarify what I meant. Not a lie, but still a contradiction to Anon's previous statement that they were not out to hurt psn users.
As for the MM thing, they are liked by the official LBP FB page, so they see whatever that other page writes on their own. Don' you think if those people were out posing as MM themselves, that MM would have taken some sort of action against them by now? At least put out an official statement debunking it? Instead, other devs also came out saying the same thing, and eventually so did Sony. That's why I think there is an official connection with both pages.

Also, you asked about when did Anon declare victory...
In reality, that "mission" was only partially accomplished, and not by their hands. The settlement was reached before the attacks even began. We have attacked Sony in order to send a message that gamers worldwide have certain rights, and are not merely sources of income. Your temporary inconveniences have allowed a lasting impact to be made upon Sony, and other corporations that are tempted to follow in the pursuit of sacrificing service to customers in exchange for larger profits. Although you may have been unable to game for a day, this event will likely provide hundreds of hours of such in the future. Anonymous are gamers too. And we support the rights of people worldwide, and will stand up for the right of having access to the device that you BOUGHT.
They ended the statement with:
Sony has decided not to Sue Geohotz; that is a victory. And thatís one of our purpose in OpSony. Thus, we have achieved what we wanted. Mission accomplished.
edit: ^^ ok that is stupid on their part, haven't seen that.
Here let me write this out clear as clearly as I can, this is my final try at this

and to drive it home: here is a search for Little Big Planet 2, are all these run my MM?
or how bout this, http://www.facebook.com/search.php?q...33994880784303, a search for Infamous 2 are all these ran by sucker punch.
They aren't shooting it down because no one is running the story because they can tell it's a fan site.
Actually, several people ran that story. Either way, it's not important anymore, we all know the official word on it now.
For whatever its worth Amazon's cloud storage network thing has gone down as well. If I remember correctly Anon was targeting them as well. Connection perhaps?
I wouldn't be surprised. The FBI is hunting them down like dogs, they just made over 40 arrests in connection with them attacking Visa and Mastercard.
